00:00While recently playing 1985 Atari arcade video game Paperboy,
00:06I thought I spotted a couple references for movies starring actor Tom Hanks,
00:13both past and future.
00:14I looked into this, and I must say, pretty impressive connections between Hanks and the actual game.
00:21In 1987, Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks appeared in Buddy Cop, the slapstick comedy film Dragnet.
00:30Dan Aykroyd, known for Ghostbusters, was later in 2015 sci-fi comedy Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus.
00:41This cast featured Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean, and Max Frewer cameos as Max Hedrum.
00:50So the story of Pixels is like an alien invasion scenario.
00:56The aliens have modeled themselves, own popular video game characters, stretching back to the 1980s.
01:03They're cameos by many popular game characters.
01:08Paperboy was among these.
01:09Toy Story was the first entirely computer animated feature film.
01:14Here I'll mention some of the possible predictive Easter eggs in Paperboy, the original released in 1995,
01:23an adventure comedy directed by John Lasseter and co-written by Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, and Alex Sokolow.
01:33The 3D-like graphics and perspective seen in Paperboy in 1985 may have been inspirational to later 3D graphics examples.
01:43Paperboy uses a diagonal down oblique isometric 2D scrolling view.
01:50A toy story produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney.
01:55I had mentioned in another video possible future nods in Paperboy to movie director Danny Boyle,
02:02who envisioned the 2015 Steve Jobs biographical drama.
02:07Jobs was the co-founder of Apple Computer, who worked for Atari in 1974.
02:14In the 1980s, both Atari and Apple sold home computer hardware.
02:21In Paperboy, I thought there may be some reference to Jobs and Apple.
02:26The dust mat in front of some of the houses reads,
02:29This was a promotional tagline.
02:32They put this word on the screen in an app for the Macintosh computer, sold for 1984.
02:39Steve Jobs played an important role in the founding and early days of Pixar.
02:45I thought the musical accompaniment for the service report screen in Paperboy may sound similar to Randy Newman's
02:56You've Got a Friend in Me from 95.
03:00This was also a theme used in the Toy Story movies.
03:05Alright, so the cast of Toy Story.
03:08Tom Hanks plays Woody, the cowboy sheriff doll.
03:12Tim Allen was Buzz Lightyear, the space ranger.
03:15Jim Varney voices Slinky Dog.
03:18So in Paperboy, I think Jim Varney and his character Ernest may be referred to.
03:24Varney debuted Ernest P. Wohl in 1980.
03:28He's kind of a southern handyman.
03:30Varney played Ernest in several movies, including Ernest Goes to Camp in 87.
03:37He had a television series on CBS broadcast in 88.
03:43His costume is a denim vest, baseball cap, blue jeans, a white undershirt.
03:49In Paperboy, you'll see two characters with a very similar dress.
03:54There were many ports of Paperboy for the various home systems and computers.
04:00Each version is not identical.
04:03There are subtle changes in each one.
04:06Paperboy was ported to the 16-bit Sega Genesis console in 1992.
04:13In this version, some of the dust mats in front of the houses on the stoops and doorsteps
04:21have some different names.
04:23On one, you'll find the word Andy.
04:27I thought this was a possible nod to Tom Hanks in Toy Story.
04:31Classic video game characters don't appear in the Toy Story movies.
04:38However, Paperboy and Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear cameo in Disney's Wreck-It Ralph animated films.
04:47You can see Paperboy in the 2012 comedy starring John C. Raleigh, Sarah Silverman, and Jack McBrayer.
04:58He's visible in the terminal.
04:59Buzz Lightyear can be seen in sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet in 2018.
05:06Gal Gadot, Alan Tudyk, Alfred Molina, and Ed O'Neill voice in this cast.
