A possible future reference to fantasy franchise The Wizard Of Oz may appear in 1989 crime comedy Police Academy 6: City Under Siege.
SPOILER ALERT
- At around 19 minutes in a gang behind a series of robberies is back at their safehouse counting the money from a recent job when we are introduced to "The Mastermind", a shadowy figure who gives orders behind a microphone & appears as a silhouette from behind a translucent screen.
- The idea of "The Man Behind The Curtain" I thought was also shown in The Wizard Of Oz (1939). When Dorothy, Toto, The Scarecrow, The Cowardly Lion & The Tin Man meet the Wizard at the end of the story he at first appears like a ferocious spirit. Later they find out he is just a man who controls the special effects spectacle from a curtained closet.
- Interestingly there are many connections in the production & cast of the Police Academy series & Oz.
- Tim Kazurinsky (Sweetchuck) debuts in the series in Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment in 1985 & later becomes an officer in Part 3: Back In Training ('86).
- Kazurinsky later played the Wizard in the first national tour of theatrical musical spinoff Wicked in 2014. The play formed the basis of a movie series released in '-24-'25 starring Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo.
- Paul Maslansky produced the original Police Academy film in 1984. He later worked on unofficial sequel, Return To Oz in '85.
- Ted Ross played Captain Reed in Police Academy ('84). He was The Lion in the 1975 stage musical retelling The Wiz. He reprised his role in the film adaptation in 1978.
