00:00While recently playing 1985 Atari arcade video game Paperboy,
00:06I thought I spotted a couple references for movies starring actor Tom Hanks,
00:13both past and future.
00:14I looked into this, and I must say, pretty impressive connections between Hanks and the actual game.
00:21In 1987, Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks appeared in Buddy Cop, the slapstick comedy film Dragnet.
00:30Dan Aykroyd, known for Ghostbusters, was later in 2015 sci-fi comedy Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus.
00:41This cast featured Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean, and Max Frewer cameos as Max Hedrum.
00:50So the story of Pixels is like an alien invasion scenario.
00:56The aliens have modeled themselves own popular video game characters, stretching back to the 1980s.
01:03They're cameos by many popular game characters.
01:08Paperboy was among these.
01:09Alright, so a big Tom Hanks movie with possible references to Paperboy,
01:14I thought, may be Joe Dante comedy, The Burbs, in 1989.
01:20This cast featured Bruce Stern, Carrie Fisher, Rick DeCommon, Corey Feldman,
01:26Wendy Shaw, Henry Gibson, Brother Theodore, and Dick Miller and Robert Picardo cameo as Garbage Men.
01:32Actress Carrie Fisher was also engaged to Dan Aykroyd.
01:36The story in The Burbs is, Hanks is an average, middle class, suburban husband.
01:43One of his neighbors, Klopak family, they live in an old, run-down house.
01:50They drive an old, beat-up car, give dirty looks, etc.
01:54This leads to a lot of suspicion by the other neighbors.
01:59The neighbor's dog digs up a human femur bone from along the Klopak's fence line.
02:08One of the neighbors, Walter, comes up missing.
02:11They start to suspect foul play involving the Klopak's.
02:17So, in Paperboy, you play a boy riding a bicycle.
02:20His job is to deliver the newspaper in a suburban-style American residential community.
02:29Some of the houses have a creepy, anti-social design motif.
02:35The houses are painted black.
02:37They have red windows.
02:39Some have a welcome mat that reads, get lost.
02:43Some of the houses have tombstones on the front lawn.
02:47House number 111 has a car that looks like a black hearse pulling into the driveway.
02:54Oh, yeah, right in the opening, after Hank's character stands in front of the Klopak's house,
03:00we see the Paperboy ride through the neighborhood.
03:04Note the colors on his bicycle.
03:07A blue, pink, yellow, and black.
03:10Between houses 105 and 106, check out the lawnmower.
03:17Some of the same colors, pink, blue, yellow.
