I show some possible future references to Nintendo's 1987 boxing video game Punch-Out!! present in crime comedy Police Academy 3: Back In Training ('86). I thought the film may be a good place to look for Nintendo easter eggs because of 2 factors:
- Art Metrano plays bullying senior officer Mouser in this, he shares a name with a boss in Super Mario Bros. 2 ('88).
- Michael Winslow plays Jones (sound effects guy) & played and imperial officer in '87 Mel Brooks parody Spaceballs. Rick Moranis played a spoofed version of Star Wars' Darth Vader in this & had acted in musical comedy Little Shop Of Horrors in 1986. This features carnivorous plant Audrey 2 which is similar to the piranha plant in the mario games. Also the opening to the 1960 Roger Corman directed Little Shop original has a very similar music theme to the fortress level of Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988).

The Punch-Out!! Easter Egg:
- Nintendo mascot Mario cameos in Punch-Out!! as the referee.
- At around 35 minutes 47 seconds into Police Academy 3 Mouser & Proctor are standing on a building rooftop at night with what appears to be the skyline of a major American city in the background (NYC). Mouser remarks seeing Mr. Sandman leaping rooftop to rooftop.
- Mario cameos in Punch-Out!! as the referee.
- The scenes between the fights in the game give players the password that they can save & input again so they don't have to fight through all of the fighters every time they switch the console on. This scrolling intermission shows Little Mac jogging behind trainer Doc Louis who rides a bicycle. Manhattan & The Statue Of Liberty are in the background.
- Mr. Sandman is a boxing opponent in Punch-Out!!, in the original you fight him near the end, just before Super Macho Man & Heavyweight champ Mike Tyson.
- At 36 min 40 sec we see Bud Kirkland fighting in the 1st Annual Inter-Academy Boxing Match. His family is known in the series for punching one another in family gatherings / at the dinner table etc..

00:00In this video I'll share some possible future easter egg connections to Nintendo video games
00:05and you can see these in the Police Academy crime comedy film series from the 80s. I thought Police
00:12Academy 3 back in training in 86 would be a good place to look for Nintendo references. I can think
00:22of two big direct links to Nintendo Super Mario Brothers series. An easy one is this film
00:29has the exception in the franchise to featuring Art Matrono as Commandant Mauser. He replaces
00:38police nemesis Harris played in the other films by G.W. Bailey. Police Academy 3 features an
00:46extensive cast including Steve Guttenberg, David Graff, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, Leslie
00:53Easterbrook, George Gaines, Scott Thompson, newcomers Debra Lee Scott, Tim Kazerinsky, Bobcat
01:01Gothwood. The other easy connection to Mario would be Michael Winslow. In 1987 Mel Brooks
01:09sci-fi comedy spoof Spaceballs. Winslow acts alongside faux Darth Vader Lord
01:17helmet portrayed by Rick Moranis, your link to Super Mario Brothers. He is in the 1986 version of
01:26horror comedy Little Shop of Horrors. The carnivorous alien plant in Little Shop, Audrey 2, very similar
01:34to a Super Mario game enemy, the Piranha Plant. And in the earlier 1960 version, Nintendo fans will hear of
01:47a very familiar tune in the opening. This is the background music to the fortress level of Super
01:55Mario Brothers 3 in 1988. So on to the Easter egg. I thought there may be a future reference to
02:04Mike
02:05Tyson's punch-out in some scenes in Police Academy 3 starting at around 35 minutes 47 seconds. So in the
02:15game
02:16play the character Little Mac, he goes through a series of boxing matches. In the Mario connection,
02:24Nintendo's mascot cameos as the referee. Mouser and Proctor are standing on the rooftop of a building
02:34in what looks like New York City. Proctor remarks on the skyline. Mouser adds,
02:40you can see Mr. Sandman hopping rooftop to rooftop. In punch-out between the fight stages,
02:48there's a scene where you can get a password. It basically saves your progress so you don't have to
02:55fight all the characters again to get to the same point in the game. This scene shows a little
03:03mat training. He's jogging, running behind Doc Lewis. The background is of Manhattan and the Statue of
03:13Liberty. Mr. Sandman is a difficult fighter in the punch-out games. In the original, you fight him just
03:22before Super Macho Man and the final opponent, Tyson. But then at 36 minutes 47 seconds, we have some scenes
03:33from the first annual Inter-Academy boxing matches. And here Bud Kirkland is engaged in a fight. His
03:42character's family is infamous in the Police Academy movies, almost always shown in physical altercations.
