00:00Riot's tagfighter 2xKO had a pretty shaky launch in January, with layoffs just three
00:05weeks later.
00:06So it was hardly surprising when the inevitable happened in August, shutdown of future development,
00:10with refunds going out to those who made in-game purchases up to that point.
00:14In its announcement post, Riot shared that it was unable to find the momentum to keep
00:182xKO sustainable, a sentiment shared by co-founder Mark Merrill during a panel at PAX West.
00:24Asked about the mistakes the developer has made over the years, with a heavy emphasis
00:27on the tagfighter, Merrill shared, well, first of all, I wouldn't characterize 2xKO as a
00:33mistake.
00:33Merrill also stated, one of the challenges with free-to-play games and or the live service
00:38model in general, is unless you do something incredible, especially in a really competitive
00:42world where 20,000 plus games are launched on Steam, and there's an infinite amount of
00:46social media content, and there's an infinite amount of stuff to go watch on YouTube, you're
00:51not just competing against games, you're competing against everything.
00:54It might be game over for 2xKO, but at least Riot is taking it as a learning experience,
00:59rather than a complete swing and a miss.
