Has this youth coach gone too far?
Transcript
00:00We're at the John's power surge coming up at 835.
00:03He has said things are getting reshuffled this week.
00:06A little reset.
00:07What's he going to do with the lone undefeated team in the NFL?
00:10We'll get to that.
00:11Let's go to Danny.
00:12You're on 97.1.
00:14Well, good morning, John.
00:15Congratulations on the best candy list.
00:19Bryce and Carr, I guess my answer is Carr.
00:22However, my biggest beat with Bryce is staring,
00:25constantly staring down the receivers.
00:27I don't know that he ever went to a second or third read.
00:31And the potential to throw the ball out of bounds on the floor down or hail Mary.
00:36Isn't that coachable?
00:37It just should be.
00:39You can fix that with all his other tools.
00:41Maybe be more cerebral.
00:43I don't know.
00:44That's what frustrates me.
00:45Is it coaching with Bryce?
00:47Isn't it?
00:49But my answer is Carr.
00:50Yeah, to a degree it absolutely is coaching.
00:52But they've also said, flip side, Tommy Carr,
00:54one of the things they sell on him when they talk about him
00:57is how cerebral he is.
00:58Right.
00:58I think the quote from Whittingham was like,
01:00I've never been around someone who's this,
01:02who's prepared or studies the game this way.
01:06Which is why, not surprised at the freshman moment of the fumble,
01:13but more shocked at throwing the ball into a four-man coverage.
01:21Whittingham, more than once after games,
01:24has mentioned Tommy Carr's always in the quarterback room when he passes by it.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Tommy or Bryce, let's talk back.
01:31I find him the biggest issue, Tom in Grand Rapids.
01:33I think you can make that.
01:34When you see multiple quarterbacks struggling,
01:36you can obviously look at the play caller.
01:38Tommy didn't fumble on the sacks.
01:40That's the only difference between him and Bryce.
01:42And another says, I want Bryce to succeed,
01:44but opposition tells you everything.
01:45When Carr is in, the Hoosiers didn't load the box.
01:48They dropped more coverage.
01:49That's different than when Underwood is in the game.
01:51They don't respect his passing,
01:52and it limits what struggles they are having on offense.
01:56Or it limits the run game, which is what they need to get going.
01:58Well, yeah, but they also didn't drop any extra guys in the box
02:01because there was no threat of a run game.
02:05All right, Heather, let's get to this.
02:07Okay, so obviously my kids are little, right?
02:10So we're not involved in youth sports yet.
02:12We are in activities, right?
02:14But they're two and four.
02:16So I'm far removed from the situation.
02:19But over the weekend, we went to a youth football playoff game.
02:23Super fun for my nephew.
02:25He plays, and they're 10.
02:2910 and maybe 11, I think, on this team.
02:32So what's that?
02:32Fourth grade?
02:33Fourth, fifth grade.
02:35I think there was a couple of big kids out there.
02:37I was like, whoa, and I think they said they were fifth graders.
02:40Well, big kids can be younger than that, too.
02:42I know.
02:43Well, Teddy wasn't out there, but they were big.
02:45So I'm like, gosh, how old are these kids?
02:46Fourth and fifth grade, I believe.
02:49But before the game, Colin shared this post with me.
02:52He's like, oh, my gosh, look at this.
02:53It was the opposing team's coach made a post on social media to fire up the team, right?
03:02And I was kind of surprised by this post.
03:05I mean, it talked about breaking necks, cashing checks, and then it had this big graphic, right?
03:11And it said, just effing win.
03:14And I thought, man, that's a lot for a youth game for 10-year-old.
03:22It seems like a lot.
03:24Or is this just kind of how youth sports is?
03:27Yeah, hey, mom, dad, what does effing mean?
03:31I'll show it to you.
03:32I saved the graphic.
03:33Oh, no, yeah.
03:35I've seen that posted before in a number of different ways.
03:39Yes.
03:39Yeah, they obviously made their...
03:40Whoa.
03:43He actually posted the word.
03:45Oh, yeah, yes.
03:46Oh, I thought it was just F-I-N-G.
03:49No, no.
03:50Oh, wow.
03:51Oh, no.
03:52I mean, I just can't say that word on radio.
03:54Right.
03:56Is this too far?
03:58And it's time to break necks.
04:00And cash checks.
04:01And cash our checks.
04:04NIL.
04:05For a 10-year-old football game, yes.
04:10And they lost.
04:11To even put that word publicly on...
04:13Can I see it real quick?
04:14Yeah.
04:18Okay, this is his own personal...
04:21Yes, it is.
04:22But still, I would imagine...
04:24But still, you are posting it as the coach.
04:27Yes.
04:27You've got the team logo as well as the opponent's team that you're playing.
04:33Yeah.
04:34And then you actually write the word for a 10-year-old football game.
04:39Like, I wouldn't even write that for...
04:40I wouldn't put that graphic together for...
04:42Is this what I'm getting into when my kids get older?
04:43Jack's high school football game.
04:46So, Colin showed that to me.
04:47And I was like, wow, that's a lot.
04:49That's a lot for a kid's game.
04:52Right.
04:53That guy still wears his varsity jacket.
04:55He still thinks he's playing.
04:56Yeah.
04:56I mean, that's something that, at that age, absolutely not.
04:59The word shouldn't be spelled out any way, shape, or form.
05:01But all of it's just over the top for that age.
05:04Maybe high school.
05:06That's something that is said in a locker room.
05:08Firing up a team before the week.
05:10No, no.
05:11No, no, no.
05:12No, no, no.
05:12If you are a high school football coach, I know it's said, and I know I'm going to go
05:17old on this, but until you are, even in college, like, I don't, as a coach, would not use that
05:28language with kids that I'm coaching.
05:31The effing part's out the door no matter what, in my mind.
05:34The other stuff, I think, you know, that's football jargon at that age.
05:37That's why I made the varsity jacket comment.
05:40Yeah.
05:41I see a lot in football.
05:43The coaching mentality versus the other sports.
05:47Man, I think half the coaches think they're still playing.
05:51John, you laughed.
05:52It's true.
05:52No, I know.
05:53I laugh because I agree with you.
05:54Is it football more than any other youth sport?
05:57It's not even close, Jim.
05:58Maybe hockey.
05:59I played hockey, but I haven't been around youth hockey in a long time.
06:04The old school mentality of some of these football guys, I just laugh at them.
06:08Are they still wearing the old bike shorts, too?
06:11The tight bike shorts?
06:12Coach's shorts?
06:14Not much of it.
06:17So, this is great.
06:19Sam had good coaches this year in general.
06:22If people are listening, I don't want to throw anyone back.
06:24But one of his assistants just has the right mindset about that, getting that intensity,
06:29but being almost professional about it.
06:32Yeah.
06:33I mean, I think...
06:34There are ways to fire up a 10-year-old football team or an 8-year-old football team.
06:41Hell, I do it when I go out in the yard and I work with Teddy.
06:44Like, I start to get a little excited anytime I'm talking about football.
06:49But if Teddy, at 5 or even at 10, I'm going to coach his teams.
06:55Absolutely, no way, shape, or form am I using language like that.
07:00That is way over the top.
07:02And while, yeah, it wasn't directed towards the children.
07:04It was on his own personal Twitter or wherever it was.
07:07All these kids are going to see it.
07:08But still, they all, at that age, they all have phones.
07:11Yeah.
07:12They're all going to see it.
07:12They all have...
07:13I mean, someone's coming.
07:13I saw it.
07:14I think it's okay.
07:15They can use that word, too.
07:16Or they could repost it.
07:18Breaking necks and cashing checks.
07:20I also wanted to make a point.
07:22It's more of the graphic, I think, that got me.
07:23It's 100% the graphic.
07:24AI slop graphic with the text in the end zone.
07:27No, that's fine.
07:30He's posting it to look cool.
07:33He thinks this is cool.
07:35His audience isn't his 10-year-old football team.
07:37His audience is all his fellow dads and bros.
07:40Look at my...
07:41Our team's going to go out and rip their spines out.
07:46You can get that point across.
07:48If you play football, that's the goal.
07:51It's domination.
07:53Physical domination.
07:55Leave a graveyard behind us.
07:58Pile of bones.
07:59Those 10-year-olds are going to have a funeral this Saturday.
08:01Pull out the stretchers.
08:02Have the ambulance ready.
08:04Easy.
08:04Easy, guy.
08:05Easy.
08:07Way over the top with that graphic.
08:09Okay, good.
08:09Well, I'm glad to hear this.
08:12I'm like, oh my gosh, what am I going to get into when my kids start playing youth sports?
08:16So every once in a while, like when Ellie will start one of her softball seasons, whether it's travel or
08:23at school, I will post...
08:26I'll repost something like her schedule or something like that where she'll say, hey, first game today against whatever.
08:32And I have once or twice, because it's the start of the season, I reposted it with LFG.
08:43Okay.
08:43After I did that, I'm like, wait a second here.
08:46This is...
08:47But I didn't spell out the word.
08:50I know.
08:51Obviously, everybody knows what I'm talking about.
08:55Some early texts, and this would be great for parents to jump in the conversation.
08:59248-539-9797.
09:02Let's go to Cleon.
09:03You're on 97.1.
09:05Good morning, guys.
09:06How are you?
09:07Good.
09:09I've been in sports all my life, and I'm 70-plus.
09:16Okay.
09:17I've always run across guys like this one, who never played, was never an athlete, but always talked the talk
09:28and never walked the walk.
09:29Look, you do not type up 10-year-olds with that type of language.
09:37Cleon, I agree.
09:40That's what's wrong with our kids today.
09:42I'm in the gyms right now today when I see 10- and 11-year-olds coming in with LeBron
09:50jerseys on, patches, fake tattoos, and hair bands.
09:55And you know what I want to do?
09:57Look at a parent and slap them.
09:59What are you doing?
10:01These are 10-year-olds and 9-year-olds.
10:04It's leadership by example.
10:06That's why your kid is out of control.
10:09Back off.
10:10Let the kids play.
10:11I know you never played.
10:12Like you said, you still got your high school jacket that you never even had a patch on wearing it.
10:19Give me a break.
10:20It's wannabes.
10:21Mm-hmm.
10:22That's all that is.
10:23It's a post from wannabes.
10:25A couple texts.
10:26I'm surprised.
10:26I wouldn't be surprised at all if the league sees that post, that there's repercussions from the league seeing that
10:37post.
10:39I have no idea.
10:40I mean, I know nothing about it, but it was shocking.
10:43Yeah.
10:44A text said, did they win, though?
10:46No, they didn't.
10:46They lost.
10:51The coach is trying to be PJ Fleck for 10-year-olds.
10:54Is he going to dip their blood on his face if they get a paper cut, Ryan, at work?
11:00He says, make their mothers mourn on three.
11:03Ready?
11:03Break!
11:07Come on, man.
11:09Youth sports suck because of the parents.
11:12Says we need to build more data centers so dudes who peaked in high school can get more flyers made
11:17for their youth football league.
11:18Oh, boy.
11:19These texts are great.
11:20We've got room on the phones.
11:21It's 97-1.
11:22It's a good one.
11:22You
