Is the the jump the shark moment for college athletics?
Transcript
00:00So I don't know how closely some of you have followed this story,
00:04but it is blowing up.
00:07Brendan Soresby, who is supposed to be the new quarterback
00:11through the transfer portal in NIL at Texas Tech,
00:16was originally at Indiana.
00:17He was at Cincinnati, and now he is scheduled to be
00:22the starting quarterback for Texas Tech.
00:24That's the path that he has taken in his college career.
00:28That's on the field.
00:30Off the field, he has admitted to placing over $90,000 worth of bets
00:36on sports, and I think the more concerning one
00:41is that he placed upwards of 40, if not more, bets
00:45on the games that he was actually playing in.
00:50And when you have a situation like this,
00:52you start thinking about all the different scenarios,
00:54and these have all been brought up throughout the course of yesterday
00:58when this news broke, the Black Sox scandal.
01:01You're going all the way back more than 100 years.
01:04Pete Rose, who famously was accused of betting on sports,
01:09he admitted to it, and bet on his own team,
01:11but never bet against his team to lose.
01:14So he says, but those are the types of things
01:17that are being brought up in this current situation.
01:20And the news that broke yesterday,
01:24let me go back just a couple of weeks ago,
01:26Brandon Sorsby was deemed ineligible by the NCAA to play this year
01:31because of betting on sports, betting on his own games.
01:35They filed a brief, and it was a temporary injunction
01:41was put in place by a Texas judge
01:43that would allow Sorsby to play this year.
01:47And throughout all the legal jargon,
01:49it was basically the harm that would come to Brandon Sorsby
01:54financially and future financial gains,
01:58he would receive severe harm by not being allowed to play.
02:03So they said, you could play.
02:05The NCAA, in turn, says, well, we want to file an appeal,
02:10and it's, I don't know the legal term, an urgent appeal,
02:13even if it's one that's going to be heard sooner than others,
02:17it's probably not going to be heard
02:19until after Texas Tech plays all their game.
02:22The fallout is from coaches, ADs,
02:27and Sonny Dyke said, you mentioned it at the end of the last segment,
02:31how could you trust the outcome of any game that is played anymore?
02:38Athletic directors, coaches, Georgia sent out a memo that said,
02:42hey, we are no longer scheduling any games in any sport,
02:48any competitions with Texas Tech.
02:51The Big 12 is exploring options to not play Texas Tech this year
02:56and basically boycott anything that Texas Tech would do.
03:00And here's one quote that I think is absolutely spot on.
03:05Now, it's from an anonymous Big 12 coach,
03:07but it is the hypocrisy is consistent throughout our profession right now.
03:11Nobody cares about the betterment of the game and its future anymore.
03:15Everyone's in survival mode on how they can win and survive right now.
03:20College administrators, college commissioners, and college coaches.
03:24That's how it's going to be until it effing crashes and burns.
03:30And I think it's spot on.
03:33Everyone is in survival mode.
03:35How can I win this year so that I have my job next year?
03:40I'll worry about next year, next year.
03:42I guess the question is, how does it land with you, the sports fan?
03:46Because there are so many quotes, and John's read a few of them,
03:49from commissioners to ADs to coaches.
03:51This is inflammatory.
03:52This has set the sport on fire.
03:54When you have the quote, we've officially lost our soul,
03:57how can anyone trust the outcomes of the games?
04:02When you have ADs referencing the 1919 Black Sox,
04:06when you have a quarterback who bet on his own team 40 times,
04:10and the only reason he can play as a Lubbock judge,
04:13wink, wink, nudge, nudge, says, you're good.
04:17This is everything wrong with the sport wrapped into one story.
04:21So does this hit you extra hard as a fan,
04:23and is this your breaking point?
04:25Because it sounds like a breaking point for these teams,
04:27universities, commissioners who are going,
04:29we need to do everything we can to punish Texas Tech.
04:32Don't play him.
04:33Don't acknowledge him.
04:34He shouldn't be playing.
04:36And guess where the appeal is going to be heard?
04:39Lubbock?
04:40Well, it's going to be the Seventh Court of Appeals in Texas.
04:42I don't know where that is.
04:43I don't know, but it was posted by Brandon Marcello
04:49that the four judges that will hear the appeal
04:53all graduated from Texas Tech.
04:56Okay.
04:58All right.
04:59It's in Amarillo, if you're curious,
05:01Seventh Court of Appeals in Texas.
05:04How does this hit you as a college football fan?
05:07Because we've had conversations in years past
05:10about your love of college football,
05:12and is this the final straw?
05:15But my Saturdays will still be my Saturdays, right?
05:17Kind of the coping mechanism.
05:18Well, now this is starting to affect the Saturdays.
05:20Yes.
05:20Because if you can't trust what's going on out there,
05:23then, I mean, what are you supposed to do?
05:26John, this is the point of no return.
05:29I like that we can gamble on sports,
05:32but I feel like when this stuff comes up,
05:35it has to be dealt with aggressively.
05:37You have to drop the hammer on cases like this.
05:40Or you lose the whole plot.
05:41If we can't trust the result of the game,
05:44don't even play the games.
05:46Yeah.
05:47And so here's,
05:48I know this is a little bit far,
05:50but this is another quote from a Big 12 coach.
05:52If this is the precedent that I owe precedent,
05:54then I owe it to my players to bring in people
05:56from Las Vegas to teach us how to gamble.
05:58Then collectively,
05:59we can decide which games we play hard
06:01to cover the spread and which ones we won't.
06:03I'm supposed to do what's best for my players.
06:05And in that case,
06:06they would be able to make a lot of money
06:08betting on our games.
06:09That's the precedent for me.
06:11Now,
06:11it's a bit of an overreach comment.
06:13It's a smart alarm goes off.
06:15But to his point,
06:17oh,
06:17we're 12 and a half point favorites in this one.
06:20I think we can get away with winning by 10.
06:24Still in the game.
06:25Smart money's on 10.
06:26Bet against ourselves and make some money.
06:28Like it's stupid,
06:29but I'm happy he said it
06:30because it needs to be brought up how absurd it is.
06:32Like a smart ass comment is still necessary
06:34because it shows the world that we are willingly entering
06:38by playing people who bet on these games.
06:42And just in case you're wondering,
06:45and some may think,
06:46oh,
06:46well,
06:46he just made a mistake.
06:48Like every single year,
06:51the NCAA mandates meetings and lectures
06:55that every athlete,
06:57student athlete,
06:58doesn't matter the sport,
06:59has to sit through
07:00where they go over the rules in the NCAA.
07:03And some of those are,
07:04hey,
07:05you know,
07:05recruiting rules,
07:06all those different things,
07:06but they're also the gambling rules,
07:08especially now that gambling is legal,
07:09not in every state,
07:10but in a lot of states.
07:12And they specifically go over betting on NCAA sports.
07:17And you can't even bet on an NFL game
07:21because it's an NCAA sanctioned sport.
07:24Really the kind of the easy thing to do
07:28is you can bet on the Kentucky Derby
07:29because that's not an NCAA sanctioned sport.
07:33That's as minimal as you can go.
07:36And there are some other things that,
07:37you know,
07:38you can bet on anything anymore,
07:39but if it's an NCAA sanctioned sport
07:42or an NCAA sanctioned sport
07:45that has a championship game,
07:47you cannot bet on it
07:49as an employee of a university
07:51or as an athlete of a university.
07:55And those rules are,
07:57they go over them ad nauseum.
08:00I'm looking through the text
08:02and we have not yet got one
08:04that I know we're going to get today.
08:06What's wrong with a young man
08:07betting on himself?
08:09Right.
08:11If you're okay with that,
08:13then I really don't know what to tell you.
08:15It's the advice we give young people all the time.
08:16Bet on yourself.
08:17Yeah.
08:18He took it just a little too literally.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Although, no, he didn't
08:21because he's allowed to keep playing football.
08:22There's no consequences.
08:24Oh, there is consequence.
08:25Two-game suspension.
08:26Isn't that almost worse?
08:29Like, we acknowledge it's wrong,
08:33but it's two games.
08:34Who are their first two games against?
08:36I knew you were going to ask me that question.
08:38I'm sorry.
08:39I can Google too.
08:40You're not the only person with access to the internet.
08:42I bet you it's two nobodies.
08:44Yeah, it is.
08:46So some stiff punishment for this.
08:47Throwing the integrity of the game into question,
08:49you can't play against Abilene Christian.
08:51The Wildcats.
08:52And Oregon State.
08:53Yeah, who I think was two and ten last year.
08:56So remember, kids,
08:58don't bet on college games that you're participating in
09:01and might be throwing to make lots of money
09:03because the consequence is you won't be able to play
09:05against Abilene Christian and Oregon State,
09:07but you'll still be able to play all the games that matter
09:09and chase a national title.
09:10Yep.
09:11So it's one of those shoes that dropped yesterday
09:16that I think is going to be,
09:19it may be the last thing that happens before the NCAA
09:22is just throws their hands up and says,
09:25you know what,
09:27we're admitting we have no power.
09:30We're admitting that we cannot control
09:35and legislate our sports.
09:37So we're just going to throw our hands up and say,
09:39do what you want to do.
09:41I see we got calls to get to.
09:43You guys have feedback on this.
09:44Everybody in college football is talking about this.
09:47Coaches, ADs.
09:48And all of college sports,
09:50not just college football.
09:51Presidents.
09:51Well, you're right.
09:52It has ramifications across all of college sports.
09:54And I guess,
09:55I don't imagine we have power brokers on hold,
09:59but we want to hear from regular fans.
10:01Does this impact your interest?
10:03Are you checking out on college sports
10:05when you see this and see that this is allowed?
10:07It's 97.1.
