Khang asks Doug and Gator a series of questions about PJ Fleck, BYU-Utah and others.
Transcript
00:03gator heads or tails a tails calls a tail it is a head i will defer all right gator question
00:11number one for the first time since 1978 five and two minnesota holds all three of their
00:17traditional rivalry trophies the gophers just beat iowa saturday to win the floyd of rosedale
00:22is pj fleck a good college football coach uh no pj fleck's an outstanding college football coach
00:31okay he's great he really is to be able to do what he's done at multiple stops i mean the
00:38season
00:38he had at western michigan was great you knew that wasn't going to last because he's just you
00:42do something like that the macklove you're gonna get hired minnesota took a chance on him and it's
00:48paid off for them i mean they've won eight games a few times they've won nine games they had an
00:5311
00:54win season under pj fleck uh he's actually got a a better than 500 record against the big 10
01:00um this is a guy who deserves his flowers he's a hell of a coach and to be able to
01:06do it at a school
01:06that's not known for spending big time money on players and nobody's talking about in minnesota
01:12and nil in the same sentence i i think the world of pj fleck i think he is you know
01:17in the fact that
01:18he's got some longevity there now he's it's not like he's only there for a few years man how many
01:22years has he been in minnesota 10 10 years it's a long time man i i've come to really respect
01:27what
01:28pj fleck has done yeah i mean look i i think he's a really good minnesota coach he is over
01:33500 in the
01:34big 10 he's 42 and 41 and he can likely stay there forever and i kind of respect that if
01:40you if you are
01:40in a place where you're winning and winning enough at a non-traditional power you know he's
01:47he could stay he could be a lifer there um but i kind of think he's like our show i
01:52think our show
01:53works in detroit and it works in the state of michigan and i'm not sure it would work elsewhere
01:57i'm not sure that pj fleck at a bigger program would take that take off and run but i think
02:02he's
02:03perfectly cast for minnesota i did not know gator love pj fleck so much that was a lot but i
02:10do agree
02:10that i think that if the other options he's a bad coach i'm gonna go with the good coach he's
02:14a good
02:14college football coach yeah um he had a winning record at western michigan you guys just read off
02:19his overall record and big 10 record yeah i mean you could do a lot worse than pj fleck i'm
02:24not sure
02:24if he left minnesota how much better he would be but as far as just what i can judge him
02:29on what he's
02:30done in his resume and i think yes he's a good solid football coach but we'll see if he went
02:36somewhere
02:36else yeah all right three power four jobs are open maryland north carolina state and baylor which
02:44would you want if you were a head coaching candidate so i would be thinking about where do i have
02:50the
02:50best chance to win and it would not be maryland in spite of their proximity to talent in the in
02:56the dc
02:56area the dmv i i just don't know that some of these bottom tier and and middle class big 10
03:04schools
03:04will ever be able to compete with the big boys and so i would not take maryland these three schools
03:11all are kind of similar in terms of nil money that they spend so i'm thinking nc state or baylor
03:17and
03:17i'm going to go with baylor because of proximity to talent and the big 12 is not the big 10
03:21or sec
03:22texas has the high is the highest producing state of college football players and given that all three
03:28of these are roughly the same in terms of nil but baylor has a comp and that is smu smu
03:35their
03:35valuation is roughly 3 million more than baylor's which isn't a ton of money and smu is in that second
03:41tier of power four they're in the acc and they're competing to win the acc so i think baylor with
03:47just
03:47a little bit more input and financial input could compete for the big 12 the way smu competes for the
03:53acc i think it's interesting we're both going to cast aside nc state and not even consider it
03:58i i look at maryland one thing you have to consider but there's two things in maryland one and you
04:04mentioned that the fertile recruiting area they have because it is good recruiting ground in that
04:08part of the country um but they also have a large number of billionaires if you get the right person
04:17to come in there and solicit the funds from those people they have eight billionaires listed right now
04:22um that are alumnas so they have an opportunity there that's not the school i would say because
04:29i do think the landscape at a big 10 is tougher although indiana just flipped things around in a
04:33year yep um and and now they've got nil going just fine it is baylor baylor is the better recruiting
04:40area it's way more fertile than seemingly anywhere but maybe florida in the in this country it's outstanding
04:45there competing against teams in the big 12 is different than competing against teams in the big 10
04:50plus there's oil money in texas and baylor has flared up from time to time to have really good
04:56seasons it's there it's in them it may be laying dormant right now but it won't take much to to
05:02spark it again i i'd say it's baylor yeah i agree i think for me it would be baylor as
05:06well um the big
05:0812 ain't what it used to be but that also means it's more wide open the conference is there for
05:12the
05:12taking if you ask me the obvious talent that is in the state of texas for recruiting you don't even
05:17have
05:18to leave the state to get a bunch of great players and i also think they'd be willing to provide
05:22more
05:22resource and or cheat as well i don't know maybe i mean as long as i don't know about it
05:29yeah all
05:30right the utah byu game they will have a 10 a.m local kickoff time november 7th is this the
05:37dumbest
05:37thing ever yeah it's it's pretty dumb um it's not as dumb as having usc ucla oregon and washington
05:45playing in the big 10 uh and it's certainly not as dumb as having cal and stanford playing in the
05:51acc
05:52but it's dumb this is a colossal waste of of a great rivalry for those fan bases in utah this
05:59is a
06:00massive game out west it's one that doesn't get enough tension attention out here in the midwest
06:05but utah byu is a great rivalry it's a heated rivalry it's one that i would want to see and
06:12not
06:13at noon like this this should be at night with the spotlight on the mountain in the in the distance
06:19it says byu on i don't know if they're playing provo this year or not or whatever but it would
06:23it's
06:24an awesome night game waiting to happen and to have this one be a noon eastern time or 10 o
06:30'clock
06:30mountain time is dumb it's not the dumbest thing ever it's the greatest thing ever i love the 10 a
06:36.m
06:36start and and i gotta tell you byu and utah fans are the least likely fan bases to be concerned
06:44about
06:45cutting into tailgate time if you know what i'm saying and gator you talk about seeing the mountains
06:50with like the night with like the sun setting this is just the sun rising you get to see the
06:55mountains
06:55off in the distance with the sun rising so no it's not the dumbest thing ever so i do agree
07:00with you
07:01the fact about the tailgating pregame for utah byu is probably less concerning for them than it is
07:05elsewhere but stereotypes i do still feel bad for them and 10 a.m for probably the maybe the biggest
07:10game this this rivalry has ever had it should be at night and not just at night for us but
07:16at least
07:16so it's later for them i mean this is the problem is though tv networks they never care about the
07:21local
07:21audience they'll put the game on at 10 a.m 7 a.m whatever as long as the eastern time
07:26zone gets
07:26exactly what they want and this is what they care about is the noon kickoff for for people like us
07:31and in the eastern time zone so i do think it's dumb i'd rather watch it at night i feel
07:36more
07:36i feel worse for the utah byu fans honestly
07:42alabama ad greg byrne says the college football playoff selection process should recognize challenging
07:48non-conference schedules pointing to planned home and home series they have with ohio state or the
07:54ohio state and notre dame have with that in mind should three big 10 teams northwestern ucla and or
08:01indiana be on the bubble and even left out of the playoff because of their weak non-conference
08:05scheduling this year okay this is a hard answer to to come up with because it depends on the field
08:10of course it depends on the teams around him and who is you know wins and lose loses and what
08:15teams
08:15are being compared to between now and then but with that being said one more loss in indiana's out
08:21they have one ranked team on their schedule and lost that game and kurt signetti as great as he is
08:28falls just short of bragging about his non-conference schedule north texas howard and kentucky a 10-2
08:37record with no ranked wins out ucla and northwestern at least scheduled power five teams ucla had cal
08:45northwestern at colorado those aren't juggernauts but they at least included that those teams ucla
08:50has one win over a ranked team oregon and they won northwestern lost to indiana but they do have
08:57ohio state coming up to prove themselves but yeah i think those teams schedules should have them firmly
09:03on the bubble and i think your non-conference schedules should matter i think those teams it's
09:08fair to say that they can be on the bubble there'd be discussion and when you'd have discussion you
09:12would realize that indiana though they lost to ohio state i mean it was by the narrowest of margins
09:18on a play that they should have you know scored and won that game that we wouldn't be talking about
09:23indiana this in this group and you can go there and do that with any team i'm sure there'll be
09:27these
09:27these inches that went the other way yep um but i i think it's it's also easier to say
09:34the team that doesn't play for the big 10 championship out of this group
09:39you're out you don't have a chance um if you're going to be a bubble team and you're not playing
09:43in a beat in the big 10 championship hard for me to say that you deserve the discussion unless it's
09:49you or an sec team and then of course big 10 over sec yeah i think it should definitely matter
09:54i mean
09:55people are just trying to you know they're trying to find the loophole in the system right hey look at
10:00just look at our record don't look at who we played and look at their point differential whatever
10:03but it should definitely matter and all factors should matter i don't know if you could put this
10:08definitively in like where it matters you know where they i don't know formula or whatever it is but
10:13we we have eyes you know we we can see the schedule we know who you played it should definitely
10:17matter
10:22what's the most interesting game this weekend to you i i think without question it's georgia hosting
10:28florida this game being played in atlanta this is uh this is big time sec football florida is trying
10:36to you know show that they belong in this discussion of of getting into the college football playoff and
10:42to do so this is their shot you got to be georgia to do it because you've got two losses
10:47already we're
10:47talking about non-conference schedules and all that you know this florida team coming off a texas win
10:52uh they need to validate that and you know that they had the bye week in between here
10:57between the georgia game so they'll be fresh and rested and ready to go malachi tony is outstanding
11:03immense of the quarterback has been accurate as hell that's a pretty good combo that they have
11:08there and for georgia you know they're looking at their wounds after losing to auburn they also have
11:14had this bye week getting ready for this game did you just give the miami players to florida i did
11:18and i didn't mean to do that damn it oh running back right running back from florida
11:24they're gonna get all the players yeah my bad i can't believe i just did that but that happens
11:29yeah mensa yeah other kind of mensa but no it's it's huge for both teams both teams have to validate
11:37what happened for for georgia they got to make sure that they atone for the loss to auburn
11:41and for florida it's validating the win over texas florida traded for antecumpo too i think
11:46wow most interesting game this weekend to me ohio state at usc who's the buckeyes quarterback
11:52and a canny cardell jones it meanwhile usc has been given up for dead not so fast my friend
11:58ohio state's got a travel game or uh for this buckeye team going across country usc is still
12:05a six and two football team and they're getting ripped for their performance at wisconsin but
12:10they have a carrot if they went out they will be nine and two with wins over three teams currently
12:16in the top 10 ohio state indiana and ucla so i think usc if i'm coaching usc i'm talking about
12:24how they got a chance at the playoff so i've said this before i'm not a complicated guy i'm just
12:29a
12:29sucker for the big game the two ranked teams and especially if florida's got all miami players too
12:35baby florida versus georgia world's largest outdoor cocktail party it might not end up being a close game
12:40in the end and i'll just bail on it but i love the you know the hype leading up to
12:44these type of big
12:44game so to me it's florida georgia as well
12:51all right class of 2027 quarterback bo brian the son of country music star luke brian he announced
12:58his commitment to georgia on sunday all right so based on nothing whatsoever what musical artist
13:03that has no sports background that you can think of would have their offspring be the best college
13:09football player i'm gonna go with blake shelton and his wife gwen stefani shelton is six feet five
13:18inches tall he goes 225 so he's a bigger dude and i think gwen stefani is probably twitchy
13:25oh so i can see a tight end or an edge rusher coming out about that coming out of that
13:31off
13:32coming out of that off screen it's a gator second there they have they have no kids so blake and
13:39gwen time to get breeding oh boy uh i like your reasoning at first my thought was i'm gonna go
13:46right to keith richards because his kid would be indestructible with that tna how many years of
13:50eligibility i mean i i don't know for you i mean just saying you know keith is still getting it
13:56done
13:56so somebody's gonna be just unstoppable um but i'm gonna go with jelly roll is my answer
14:04guy's six foot one he's been through the battles of the bulge you know he used to eat donuts all
14:08the
14:08time that's why his mom called him jelly roll and it was jelly roll as a kid has a mean
14:12streak
14:12with a questionable past landed them in jail and all that um no fear at all this guy's got tattoos
14:19on
14:19his face his face i'd say jelly rolls kid is uh bound for glory all right so doug i think
14:28you're
14:29gonna agree with me on this one nikki minaj hear me out she has a huge butt even if president
14:34trump
14:35said it was hard to miss glute size matters in football you ever heard of this thing called
14:39seat of power it's where scouts and strength coaches they refer to seat of power as like a
14:44wood hauler's ass right they're not allowed to measure players butts at the combine right now or
14:49anything like that but it's a big indicator hips glutes thick thighs of lower body explosiveness
14:55nikki minaj whoever she i don't know who she's married to her day right now their kid might likely
15:01have good lower body strength which makes them a good football player all right there you go
15:05that concludes the college football blitz thingy here on karshen anderson on 97.1 hey if you want to
15:12give us your musical artist that you would pick to have the greatest college football playing son who
15:18would you pick 248-539-9797 lions fans 11 o'clock something you're going to want to hear it's 97
15:24.1
15:25you
