The first entry recorded at ground level.
A paved road, two metres wide, runs along the floor of a valley between two curved concrete ridges that are taller than the weather. The road is not ruins. The slab joints are clean, and there are patches where sections were deliberately repaired rather than left to fail. Grass has started to come through the seams, but it hasn't broken the surface.
That's the whole argument of the chapter: the road was maintained after it stopped leading anywhere. It climbs a rise, crosses the crest, and continues out of sight — no gate, no settlement, no structure waiting at the top.
One figure walks it, uphill, carrying nothing.
If you follow brutalism, megastructures, liminal spaces, infrastructure photography or quiet dystopian worldbuilding, this one is about maintenance rather than scale. The structures are enormous, but the story is small: somebody kept fixing a road that had nowhere to go.
