Cowboys made a move to solidify their defense, should the Lions look at making a similar move?
Transcript
00:00by chance what the cowboys did yeah uh no i can't remember how to pronounce this guy's name
00:07another trade do you remember mike patin or petton or whatever it was was a patent yeah
00:14coach yeah he has been hired a long time nfl coach he's been hired by the cowboys to serve
00:21a senior defensive assistant who will work alongside defensive coordinator christian
00:25parker now i think parker's the fourth defensive coordinator they've had in four years
00:32jerry i guess announced today he's going up to the press box and petton i will be down on the
00:37field
00:39sorry the jerry's going to the press box or this other guy christian parker sorry we'll be up in
00:44sorry pronoun issues yes jerry announced today that christian parker will go to the press box and
00:51petton will be a senior defensive consultant is this something the lions should consider
00:59uh having a a defensive consultant i think i think you should consider all things yes
01:05um this is something a caller brought up yesterday too yeah the name that always comes up is jim
01:10schwartz but i guess jim schwartz you'd have to give compensation to cleveland
01:16perhaps i don't know how long that the contract was there um but i mean schwartz isn't going to
01:22come on to be consultant schwartz would come on to be the dc i would consider that in the offseason
01:27if things don't work out but i don't know i mean does schwartz still want a shot to be a
01:32head coach
01:32in the national football league he really thought he should have gotten a shot with cleveland and
01:36hard to argue that because cleveland had a great defense and he was the architect of it
01:41it wasn't just miles garrett that they had yeah just something to consider kang you got any thoughts
01:47is this something they should do yeah i don't think anything should be off the table uh you know the
01:51defense had a good game against the cardinals but that was just one game against you know not the
01:55best team but still i you know you got to take the positives when you can get them and see
01:59if they
01:59can build off this but i yeah i don't think you close the door on anything doug i think that
02:04uh and
02:04shepard's a young defensive coordinator just like parker is with the cowboys and i'm sure he would
02:08admit himself that he has things to learn too and so any other voice or trusted mind absolutely look
02:14at all that stuff i don't hope i don't know whose job that is at brad holmes at dan campbell
02:18but
02:18they should they should be looking at everything yeah yeah it's something worth considering and you
02:24got a bi-week here you know time to conduct some interviews you're not preparing for an opponent you
02:30could you know make some phone calls see if anybody can come in and just just lend a lend an
02:36ear
02:36yeah and you don't want to voice in the room you don't want to step any toes or anything because
02:39i think parker has a good relationship with uh patine yeah so i'm not sure if that matters with
02:43shepherd but when the lions hired um drew petzing they also hired mike kafka and i felt like that was
02:51like an insurance policy almost in a way in case things go awry yeah did they do the same thing
02:56when
02:56they get you know with shepherd do they have someone just in case and i've got plucked by somebody else
03:02so didn't he he's not still with the lions is he i thought he was he i know he interviewed
03:08and he
03:08didn't get he interviewed elsewhere as well but i thought he was still on the staff here
03:15says that he is still with the detroit lions as passing game coordinator okay i thought he was
03:21plucked by somebody else late but it's okay dude thanks man yeah they do this four hours every day
03:27we're gonna forget some stuff yeah so whoever's the defensive passing game coordinator
03:32that guy yeah um so the other thing is i want to look back at their off-season acquisitions
03:40okay between free agents trades and drafts
03:45who do you i wrote down what i think are the top three off-season acquisitions that have been added
03:52to this team since last season okay um do you want me to just get to the list or do
03:58you want to
03:58say who you'd put at the top or i would put dj want him at the top i think blake
04:03miller is there and
04:10sneakily it might be skylar gill howard i have blake miller three skylar gill howard two and dj want him
04:18one
04:18so we we're just thinking similar there's no right or wrong answer here it's ranking i'm how
04:25you would we know what's right yeah okay sorry there you go those are well done doc yeah those
04:32are three to come to mind i mean there are others that are vying uh for attention there i think
04:36keith
04:36abney it's it's too early to say but i'm really encouraged by his first game as a safety i've got
04:42i've
04:42got two still could help on two that still could help i got kade mays and keith abney and i
04:51i don't
04:52i kind of feel like that's relatively speaking it's kind of a disappointing offseason to be honest
04:58with you i think you should expect more in an offseason than have i mean dj want him's been a
05:05really good addition starter skylar gill howard was a sixth round pick who's just forcing his way
05:11into reps he's in that rotation freaking awesome that's a great find and that's that's one of the
05:17things that brad holmes is known for blake miller has had his ups and downs um but i think they're
05:22pretty happy with his development um yeah but ultimately i mean you know i feel like you should
05:29be asking for more in an offseason maybe um i think it'll be curious next season where they're at and
05:36what does where is keith abney is he a starting safety at that point and if he is then then
05:41okay
05:42this past draft might be really good for the lions um but i i think the kade mays one is
05:48yeah we he's the
05:49forgotten guy because he got hurt right away and yet he was probably the highest profile player they added
05:54to this team well the thing about uh kade mays is you know he could make a huge difference
06:04and there's your trade man i keep saying it but i really believe it the trade is waiting to happen
06:11with an interior offensive lineman and i don't want to cut into their depth because scruggs has been
06:17pretty good mahogany's had his his moments as well i think that they probably i don't know i don't
06:24if ben bartz were healthy he'd be another guy competing but overall probably maybe the guy that
06:31has the most riding on him in house as it stands right now is abney is they gotta get abney
06:39you know further looks at safety because you know he had i guess birchie did story and played
06:45safety since like middle school they stepped in in the nfl and you know it was encouraging i guess
06:53so enough so that they could maybe maybe you know keith abney becomes a bit of a solution
07:00that'd be great um but i'm still hopeful that the name that's going to be on that list will be
07:07whoever
07:07they acquire by the trade deadline that hopefully that's the that's a difference maker not that blake
07:13miller isn't because he's starting you know and not that want him isn't because he's starting and
07:17he's leading the team in sacks right now um but whomever they acquire and hopefully they do acquire
07:23a corner that it's a corner of real substance that that elevates this defense to where it needs to be
07:30okay so uh this is from birchie story uh the birch kid did a story on keith abney on
07:35nine someone at ticket.com abney played almost exclusively outside corner in three seasons there
07:40arizona state lions drafted him to be a nickel on sunday in arizona with detroit secondary in dire
07:45need of help not far from his old stomping grounds abney made his first nfl start at safety
07:50quote i haven't played safety since middle school he said with a smile uh birchie goes on to write
07:56it didn't look like it abney logged 51 snaps at free safety and helped stabilize the back of the
08:02lions defense in their best performance of the season a 45 21 romp of the cardinals he finished with
08:06six tackles and returned to detroit with his first career pick and first career game ball quote
08:12we're leaving arizona with some souvenirs he grinned so you know this is as we like to call something to
08:21monitor is keith abney at safety going to be a real acquisition but dj want him is the number one
08:28offseason acquisition is hutch wouldn't say it yesterday and probably wise of him when we asked
08:34him do you finally have the edge rusher opposite of hutch and he said i'm not going to degrade any
08:38of
08:38the guys that were over there in the past but dj's really helping and and between dj want him and
08:45alene mcneil they're either a taking advantage of not getting double team because hutch is or b
08:51going to have to warrant some double teams which means more single uh more you know hutch and more
08:58single up situations going against the tackle i think one of the biggest differences with what they
09:03have with want him compared with guys they've had in the past that have flashed whether it was
09:07you know houston or al-kadi muhammad is that want him can stay on the field he's not just a
09:14pass
09:15rusher he's a defensive end and that might be the difference in what makes him better than the other
09:21guys because they don't have to like they're not stuck on first down like oh well you know we're
09:27screwed against the run here because we don't have our defensive end i mean this guy's out there
09:31so i think that's a huge difference definitely has helped and want him um you know is every time
09:38he does something i get fired up because it just reinforces the idea that okay this pass rush i want
09:48it to be here all season right if they can get it together on the back end such a huge
09:53part of past
09:54defense's pass rush this team leads league in sacks in quarterback sacks and has what was trending to be
10:00and i don't know what the updated number is was trending to be the single worst pass defense in
10:06the history of the nfl at 304 yards allowed passing per game and it was it was they're trending to
10:13be
10:14there that's like the worst total nfl history look i if you're giving up a lot of passing yards a
10:20lot
10:21of times it's because you're out the big leads and teams are throwing the ball to play catch-up and
10:25and
10:25some of that has played true this year with the lions but by and large we know that the secondary
10:30hasn't been up to snuff they took a much bigger step in the right direction with the game on sunday
10:37um the interesting it's the quarterback rating against went down and it's still way too high when
10:44you're looking at i think it's 104 against or something like that it's ridiculously high but it's
10:49not last in the league there are actually teams that are worse with it with a worse quarterback
10:53rating against than the lions now they're like fourth or fifth worst in the league but that
10:57number has to get better and that's what i'm gonna be looking at and seeing passing yards against don't
11:02really care if we've talked about it before guys that you can throw for 450 yards in the game you're
11:07probably going to lose the game if you do that but if you can hold if the number is 300
11:12and the rushing
11:13total is like less than 50 i'll live with it provided the course that is not like oh yeah i
11:20threw for 300
11:20yards and six touchdowns our interview with jared goff next karshen anderson 97 one
11:25you
