Are you with Doug believing the Lions will make a big move this offseason?
Transcript
00:06doug karsh alongside scott anderson kang and kenny behind a glass great to be with you here
00:11on a monday the brackets are out and we've dedicated much of the first
00:15hour and a half of the show talking about march madness and certainly will continue down that road
00:19if you so choose uh but as we sit here on this monday morning we've had a chump vote come
00:27in
00:27for brad holmes somebody's saying they wanted more done in the off season to which i would argue
00:36much of the off season is still to come there is but they were we're still not a week into
00:44free
00:44agency by the way no we're not and here's the thing i don't know how to do what defines a
00:49big move
00:51so i don't know if i should shoot the boot guarantee it and i don't even want to go down
00:55that road in terms of but they're gonna make a big move they're gonna make a big move they didn't
01:00clear cap space for no reason and they one brad part of brad holmes's pattern is he wants a game
01:08ready team before the draft he wants to have a game ready team signed before the draft why does he
01:16want
01:16to do that because he believes in drafting talent and best player available and when he has a game
01:23ready team already locked up before the draft brad holmes then has the luxury of using the draft
01:29to to take the most talented players on his board regardless of position and it's been a formula that's
01:37worked for him they've got all this cap space they have some guys that they want to restructure and
01:41and guys that they want to sign long term for sure but those usually those long-term contracts
01:47usually have more impact down the road than they do in the immediate whatever time period you're in
01:53it's they're more costly down the road so i'm i am very confident that there are still big move
02:01or moves coming and they might be a via trade by the way yeah i don't i mean i would
02:07not as confident
02:08clearly no i'm not because i i think that if you're talking a big move i think that the move
02:14that's going
02:14to be made to eat up some of that cap space is going to be an extension and i'm i
02:19don't know if
02:20anybody's worthy of an extension right now the two guys that are right are ripe for it right now are
02:27brian branch and sam laporta because it's year four going to their fourth year the last year the
02:32contract and you can extend them um but both players are coming off injury both players coming
02:37off surgery i'm in no hurry to give either an extension in fact i'm probably not going to get
02:43even think about it until halfway through the season when i see that they're both ready that
02:46they're both actually playing laporta might be able to play right at the beginning of the season
02:51we no reason to think otherwise but brian branch is a whole other game you're talking about an achilles
02:56injury we don't know how he's going to come back we we don't know if he's going to look anywhere
03:01near
03:01what he was and even when you come right when you come for when you first come back from an
03:06achilles injury it's going to take a while so i i want to extend both players i like both players
03:12a lot
03:12but i don't need to do it yet i'm going to wait i'm going to let this thing play out
03:17and and see
03:18if i really want to do that by the end of the season and okay but if that's what they're
03:22holding
03:22up this cap space for they have you know anywhere between 32 and 40 million in cap space but depending
03:28where you're looking at right now it seems to to make me think that that's where it's going to go
03:33because the big name free agents have already signed the guys that are left and and by the way i'm
03:39not
03:39upset with what they've done when you look at what brad holmes has done the first priority we said was
03:45get a center went on got cate mays at eight million dollars a year it's an upgrade and in a
03:50very uh you
03:51know a contract that makes sense reasonable then they go out and they sign isaiah pacheco the running
03:59back backup running back to dav montgomery one of the more unique running style that runs like he's mad
04:04at the ground yeah and look he's had a couple years in his career he's looked like oh my god
04:09this guy's amazing and then the last couple years were not so good less than four yards a carry banged
04:13up doesn't look like it's great but it's a backup running back role is he david montgomery no but does
04:21he have upside yeah still is upside i don't mind it you find out they signed ty conklin the tight
04:25end
04:25okay i like that adding depth to that position because they need tight ends frankly and ty conklin's
04:31been a pretty good tight end in his career uh they went out and get izian the defensive back
04:37play safety can play corner and i think that's a really good signing a guy who's young in his career
04:42only played a few years in this league and he's a willing participant when it comes to supporting the
04:47run he's a sound tackler and by all accounts it's a pretty good signing for them okay great these are
04:54one-year deals you know when it comes to the last three the safety the center i should say is
04:59a
04:59three-year deal not only that they bring back teddy bridgewater which out of all the quarterbacks
05:03that were really available this is before we saw justin fields get traded for a six-round pick but
05:08the free agent quarterbacks that makes sense been here a couple years he knows what's going on knows
05:14the team knows the players okay sure bring them on that's i'm cool with that and it's emergency break
05:19last situation i feel confident that teddy bridgewater can keep this ship afloat if that's the case
05:25works for me um they also signed another defensive back uh the corner mccreary mccreary who's got a
05:35lot of starts under his belt in the league okay that's a depth signing i don't expect it to be
05:38a
05:38starting corner but okay it makes sense all the moves he's done to this point have been kind of
05:44sensical you know getting some depth on the offensive line i don't know if these guys are going to have
05:49a
05:49chance to start or if they're going to be competing for a starting job whether it's through the trade
05:53or through free agency that they've got uh you know with boreham and uh and and scruggs but
06:00they still have a move to make the big move they have to make is is at edge rusher and
06:06they've got
06:06money to go out and outbid anybody for cam jordan if it gets to be a bidding war for cam
06:11jordan
06:11the lions should be able to outbid teams for it now i know the kansas city wants to make a
06:15strong push
06:16for him we'll see if they do i know the jones the uh the defensive lineman there he was like
06:22two words
06:22cam jordan okay so i'll notice there are teams that want him clearly teams that want him and
06:27he's weighing his offers and going to figure out where he wants to go and hopefully he chooses the
06:31lions because i think he's the best of the bunch of the edge rushers that are available in free
06:35agency and there's still some pretty big names that are available i mean we've we've we've talked
06:39about cam jordan for it feels like months now as we have sort of the perfect the perfect guy i
06:44mean
06:44the go back well actually to the trade deadline we talked about cam jordan uh jadavion clowny you
06:50know still out there kyle van nooy still out there aj epinesa still out there cam jordan has
06:55mentioned still out there michael dana your tier gross models still out there joey bosa's still out
06:59there i think a big move is coming and you know everything there's this initial burst and then
07:05everything kind of slows down for everybody i'm not like i'll tell you off season when the off
07:10season's complete yeah and you know i feel like there's we've just kind of started it here and if
07:17you look at brad holmes pattern it i don't think he's kicking back with his feet on his desk home
07:23we're good here and i don't let's just go straight to draft prep well rewind the clock exactly a year
07:29ago when we were out doing the shows from uh twin peaks which will be out again this week thursday
07:33and friday uh for the for the tournament and news was breaking that rock yassin had signed with the
07:39lions and i don't know if it was dorsey or whatever there were there were a number of there were
07:44like
07:44two or three defensive backs that signed in that two-day period they were all depth guys but they
07:51made sense those were sensible and and reasonable contracts that they gave out to these players that
07:56were going to be quite capable to upgrade the depth what we have with the lions in this off season
08:02though there's some holes at starting jobs that i'm not sure if those are filled yet you know and we
08:08there are question marks also not just holes but there's question marks question marks about terry
08:12and arnold and what's going on with him in uh you know off field issues question marks with health
08:18with ennis rakestraw and terry and arnold coming off surgery as well and the aforementioned brian branch
08:23and sam laporta we've got injury issues with this team guys coming back so there are still things that
08:30can happen um and they can actually still go out and get a free agent offensive lineman that would
08:35definitely be a starting caliber tackle there are some of those still available juan taylor or jonah
08:41williams or jack conklin or cam robinson yeah i mean there's still some some guys out there that
08:46get the job done um but they all come with various risks because of injured pass and whatnot but um
08:52would they be somebody that's an upgrade who's on the roster right now probably two four eight five
08:57three nine ninety seven ninety seven let's go to stan and shelby township you're on ninety seven one hi stan
09:02hey good morning guys great to talk to you i got my weekly uh tigers champs and chumps all right
09:10my
09:10champ i think matt fearling's gonna make the opening day squad i think he had just a heck of a
09:17weekend
09:17and my chumps you know i'm thinking about riley green i don't think we should worry anybody who
09:24complains about his strikeouts for missing the picture and uh you know i just think like matt feeling
09:30are people gator i want to ask you do you think fans are going to realize that matt feeling is
09:37an
09:37add as a right-handed bat for the coming season because he wasn't there all last year i don't know
09:43i'm not a huge matt veerling guy he's got some versatility to play throughout the uh the diamond
09:48and you know when he's healthy he's he's good enough but i never look at matt veerling and think
09:53that's a starting player in this roster they have to have to me he's one of the last few guys
09:57on the
09:58roster because of the versatility but i i hope they're not relying on matt veerling for their
10:02he had a war of three and 25 or 24 right yeah he was he was one of those guys
10:09that i feel like
10:09matt veerling's the type of player on a really good team he's that extra piece that you value a ton
10:15so if if they if he's healthy and can get back to that form i think he becomes an extra
10:21piece that
10:22can be very much valued but is he a starting player i think he's i think this kind of guy
10:30when
10:31somebody gets hurt you're really glad you got him yeah i mean he's he's he's an average major league
10:35player you look at his ops of the last forget i mean if you want to take out last year
10:40that's fine
10:40i'll agree with take throw that out 144 games in 2024 did ops of 735 the year before that had
10:46530
10:47plate appearances and ops of 717 he's an average player that's fine um but he's not going to hold
10:54back kevin mcgonigle for making the roster what matt veerling does with the versatility is it makes it
10:59easier for aj hinch and scott harris to say as we craft this roster okay because he can play multiple
11:06positions and he hits right hand we need right-handed hitters let's keep him and then parker meadows you're
11:12going to have to get seasoned up for one more year in the minors and show us that you belong
11:16here
11:16and they've got a couple other options as well they're going to have to look at in the meantime
11:21you know matt veerling's had a nice spring but so have some other guys you know jace young has had
11:25some really good approaches at the plate max anderson's had some good approaches at the plate
11:29so we'll we'll see who ends up winning jobs
