Welcome back! Today, I’m bringing you along for my second professional dental cleaning since wearing clear aligners.

Aligners can trap biofilm and restrict natural saliva flow, making plaque and surface staining build up much faster. In this video, I share my honest experience with yellowing, how my dentist restored a clean, white shine, and why 3-month cleanings are so beneficial during aligner treatment.

Highlights in this video:

Dental Checkup: Addressing a sharp edge on a recent upper filling with Dr. Patricia at Proud Smile.

Pro Tip for Aligners: Why you should never clean your aligners with regular toothpaste (and what gentle alternatives to use instead!).

Oral Hygiene Routine: Swapping mouthwashes, avoiding artificial dyes, and applying GC Tooth Mousse inside aligners to shield enamel.

Whether you're currently in clear aligners or considering Invisalign, I hope this practical look at routine oral care and stain management is helpful for your journey!

00:00Hi guys, welcome to another dental update. So I'll give you a quick recap of my Invisalign
00:07journey so far. So at the moment I'm on week six of my third plan. So I've actually had two
00:14revisions since I started Invisalign. I started on a 19 week plan and I got to about week 10 or
00:2111
00:22I think it was and I noticed the trays weren't fitting properly or as well as I would like.
00:27So I had a scan at that point and then had a revision and it went to a new 13
00:32week plan
00:33and then that was going really well and in fact I really nearly reached the very end of that. In
00:39fact I was on about week 12 I think of the trays and I just had the sense that my
00:45teeth had still
00:47had a little ways to go in terms of closing this this front overbite here and and just straightening
00:54out a little bit more. So I had a scan at that point and so that was my second sort
00:58of revision
00:58and now I'm on the third plan and it's a 10 week plan and I'm currently on week six. So
01:05the good
01:06news though with my Invisalign plan is undoubtedly it's working. Like my teeth are tons straighter
01:12and in fact when I take out the trays and then sort of go to eat something I'm noticing that
01:18I'm chewing food on teeth that probably haven't chewed food for a very long time and it's a weird
01:24sensation to like be using you know sort of more my front teeth rather than just grinding at the back
01:29and even um the other night biting into a macadamia nut I could actually bite into it now
01:35purely using my front teeth. So that was really good because my back teeth were just wearing down
01:40and down and down and down and my front teeth weren't wearing down at all because I wasn't
01:44using them. So that's the good news with Invisalign. The challenging thing about Invisalign and I
01:50really have noticed is it can make your teeth yellow. I have had other people say that and in fact
01:57before I started the Invisalign journey I did have people saying oh Invisalign turns your teeth yellow
02:03and I sort of you don't when you hear something like that you do believe people but it's not to
02:08you experience it yourself that you really realize oh yeah. So I have had difficulties with some of my
02:15teeth going yellow basically and and staining and um so um oh and the other thing to say as well
02:22is
02:23when you're on Invisalign it's recommended that you have more regular cleanings. So I have had one
02:28cleaning of my teeth since I started Invisalign and so this is what I'm actually doing today so
02:34I'll talk about the teeth yellowing in a second but essentially what is happening today is I'm going
02:40into Proud Smile to see a dentist and I'm going to get my teeth cleaned for the second time now
02:46I'm doing this Invisalign journey and that's not just for the teeth yellowing like I think with a
02:53good clean they will be able to get rid of the staining and I think my teeth will look wider
02:58and
02:59brighter after today's cleaning but it's also because when you're wearing Invisalign apparently
03:04the biofilm or something on your teeth can be not optimal to put it mildly so it is recommended that
03:15when you're on Invisalign you do get more regular cleanings so this is going to be my second cleaning
03:19during this Invisalign journey. So um when it comes to the teeth yellowing though it was starting to bother
03:27me because um these there's two teeth here on the side especially that were really really getting
03:32yellow like obviously yellow and in fact in some lights when I was talking it almost looked like
03:36I had missing teeth there because that would then just pick up the shadows so so I just didn't really
03:43like that at all so then I looked um because when I went to Hope Island um Gio there um
03:49she's done a scan
03:50on my teeth she was explaining that some rinses can contain dyes that can actually exacerbate tooth
03:56staining especially when you're on Invisalign and the reason being is if you use a tooth rinse
04:02and then you put the tray in your mouth the tray is holding whatever is on your teeth closer to
04:09your
04:09teeth obviously for longer so that's why you wouldn't want to have like a cup of tea or a cup
04:14of coffee
04:14while you're wearing your trays because then it gets trapped inside and it'll really do a lot to
04:20stain your teeth so I went home and had a look at my rinses so this is my usual rinsing
04:26routine so I
04:27use clossies um this is before I brush by the way so I use clossies then I'll brush my teeth
04:32and I use
04:33crest toothpaste then I use a Listerine rinse and then the fluoride rinse I was using is this act
04:41alcohol free fluoride rinse and this has got a dye in it so um that was one culprit about I
04:49think the
04:50teeth tooth staining so um once I've finished Invisalign I am going to go back to this rinse
04:55because I really really like this rinse so yeah again my routine before brushing clossies rinse
05:00I brush then I brush um then I rinse with Listerine and then no water in between these rinses and
05:06then
05:06straight on with the fluoride rinse and that's what I leave on my teeth and that's why it was on
05:12my teeth
05:13plus then the tooth mousse when I put the trays in so that would have surely been exacerbating I think
05:19the
05:20staining so I got online and then found a couple of alternatives which I'm currently using so this
05:27Colgate neutral floor apparently doesn't have dyes and I'm not sure how or why the chemical composition
05:34works because you can see that it's got some color to it but apparently I don't know it's um it's
05:40one
05:40that it was said that it shouldn't have any dyes so I use this in the morning so now my
05:47new routine
05:48will pop this one aside I will go back to that one when I um start when I finish Invisalign
05:53but
05:54now in the morning I use Klossy's brush Listerine and then this one at night I then use this one
06:00so
06:01this is an act um alcohol free whitening fluoride rinse and um I actually do think that this might have
06:10helped a little bit um I mean I could be imagining it but I think maybe some of the worst
06:15of the yellow
06:16staining might have dissipated a little bit since I started using this and I would love to use this
06:22twice a day and I started using it twice a day but I did notice um a bit of gum
06:28irritation and even
06:29though this is meant to be a mild rinse and and it shouldn't cause irritation really it it can still
06:36like it's got a bit of hydrogen peroxide in it so I did notice a little bit of gum irritation
06:40with that
06:41one so I use it once a day now so um so all of that hopefully combined will be combating
06:48some of
06:48the yellowing and especially after today actually getting hopefully the stains off um and then using
06:54this system I might be able to sort of prevent the yellowing a little bit more from building up
07:00and um so so that's what's happening today I'm getting a clean and also anyone that has got
07:07fillings and problematic teeth will really relate to this I've felt another change in my mouth and it's
07:15oh I just you probably hear that I'm anxious about it it's just that sinking feeling and it and it
07:21ruins
07:22my days before I actually then go and see a dentist and this happened actually quite a few days ago
07:28and
07:28so today's the earliest I can go in and see my dentist it's um it's not a big change but
07:33it's a tiny sharp
07:34bit here and it might be associated with the filling I had so I've had one filling during this Invisalign
07:42journey and I went in and got the filling done and um and then a week later I noticed a
07:48really sharp
07:49bit and a bit of the enamel had come off next to the filling so that's the only part of
07:54our dental
07:54journey that I wasn't able to actually vlog so this is the first time that people that are following the
07:59dental journey are hearing about this but I did get a filling fixed and then a little chip of the
08:04enamel did come off and that but that was just a really simple file down so the dentist was able
08:09to just do that in a few minutes so that was no big deal but I did feel a little
08:13sharp bit
08:14I can feel another little sharp bit so I am going to ask the dentist what's going on and I'm
08:19really
08:20hoping it's not a cracked filling or a cracked tooth or anything major so um we'll find out anyway
08:27so I'm now going to pop my aligners in and we are going to head to Proud Smile at Pacific
08:34Fair so I've
08:34already got um the mousse in the tray so um that's what I do I put mousse actually in the
08:40tray my GC
08:42tooth mousse so I'll put these in this is week six and they've actually been fitting really well
08:49like there's been no problems with this one they're bulky and horrible and they make me have a lisp
08:59but they are working they are definitely straightening my teeth so okay let's go and have a clean
09:05and find out what if anything this little sharp bit I'm feeling is
09:20okay so we're here at Proud Smile now so I'm just waiting in the waiting area
09:25feeling the nerves hitting even getting my teeth cleaned like my teeth are really sensitive and
09:31just that feeling of it sometimes I think actually getting your teeth cleaned is worse sometimes
09:37than not an actual filling but at the end of the filling where they're grinding down and stuff like
09:42that like that's not too bad but actually getting your teeth cleaned when they go right down to the
09:46gum level that can actually feel really really sensitive so a few deep breaths and just try and relax
10:08okay thank you so very much it is nice to see you again the good news is about the Invisalign
10:18journey
10:19is going really well oh yeah yeah so I'm on the um week six trail you know how we did
10:25the
10:25yeah yeah yeah so I'm on week six now and this these new sets have been perfect but my teeth
10:32are going
10:33yellow under the trays so that's why but I have swapped rinses like I've got a better rinse now so
10:40I'm trying to you know obviously stop the staining but that's why I'm here for cleaning all right but
10:46there's my tongue is so awful I just I think I can feel some sort of little sharp but I
10:54don't know if
10:55it's new or not but on this side of the tree no no no on my actual tooth okay so
11:01a few I don't know
11:02how many weeks ago now it was um but it was probably a good five or so weeks ago I
11:07did um get a filling a
11:09new filling here right and then a week later I felt a really sharp bit and a bit of the
11:14enamel next to the
11:15filling had chipped off all right so dr. Shane it was just a very quick filing so it was fine
11:20it was
11:20nothing so I'm hoping if there is a little sharp bit somewhere of like hopefully just be a small file
11:26down yeah of course I'm really hoping it's not like a chipped tooth or a chip filling oh I'll have
11:32a look
11:32for you but yeah that's okay that's what I'm worried about yeah okay yeah so basically I'll have to
11:39take them out yeah would you like to pop this through yeah can I actually grab a little um
11:44glove to take them out with because I yeah I use the gloves for brick because otherwise I can't take
11:50them out okay with my fingers yeah and have you been cleaning the aligners as well I have so I
11:58do
11:58I'm really fastidious about cleaning them like every time I take them out I brush them with toothpaste
12:04and um and so yes I do I do keep the aligners clean what what do you recommend okay so
12:11at first
12:11try not to brush them with a toothpaste oh that's what I've been doing so toothpaste for your teeth
12:17yeah and then with the aligners I would suggest you know the liquid hand soap that you wash your
12:22hands yeah yeah yeah yeah it will be better because sometimes the toothpaste is a bit abrasive
12:28it can interfere with the plastic oh so if you can this is a good taste as well and you're
12:36not
12:36drinking or eating anything whenever you are ready no no yeah I do take the trays out except water
12:43oh water is fine but just make sure you're rinsing your mouth yeah drink any soft drinks or anything
12:49with color as well yeah yeah before you pop them back okay well I didn't realize not to use them
12:56not
12:56to toothpaste oh that's okay because that's not been doing yeah that's all right and I also put um
13:02gc tooth mousse in here as well okay it's good yeah to protect it there are some tablets as well
13:12available to clean the aligners oh there is okay some proper cleaning solution in the yeah yeah oh tablets
13:18you need tablets you just pop them in the water yep and then with the aligners you'll get rid of
13:25the
13:25yellow issue okay yeah and you'll be able to see from my teeth there okay that's okay right a clean
13:33will
13:33probably get rid of some of this painting i'll have a look for you and yes can you look and
13:38rest here
13:39yes i'm gonna place your feet the chair of torture i'm really scared of the dentist no it's okay i
13:48am i
13:48mean not aware of me no no not of the dentist person but the actual eyes just even cleaning really
13:55feels
14:06sensitive so i can show you where the little sharp bit is is it top or bottom it's top top
14:14right i have
14:15to really search for it like it's not and i can't feel any sort of gaping hole or anything uh
14:20-huh so i
14:21don't think the fillings come out it might just even be the edge of my two i don't know i'm
14:27just
14:27that's okay please don't find anything bad i'll have a look for you okay
14:35i need a value when i come to the dentist oh no
14:40i have had um some repair under gas before oh you did okay did you like it it was okay
14:47thank you i actually like that show do you like this oh yeah it's good it is good i really
14:53like
14:54this show it is very light it is it is it is i do really like that show i have
15:00sent it home yeah thank
15:01you okay yeah so it's here okay i'll have a look for you i look i have to i kind
15:10of feel it at the
15:11moment so okay look at this things okay i can see it but do you know the attachment that you
15:16do have
15:17the glue yeah it's things as well okay yeah yeah let's try to clean everything for you thank you so
15:25the first one you know it's lots of water let me know if it's too cold okay i will start
15:38with the
15:39top one okay and then i'll check the one that is a bit sharp oh yeah okay okay you ready
15:49you can close it in
15:55you can close it out
15:58you can close it
16:38Do you want a turn?
16:39Do you want a turn?

18:59Do you want a turn?
18:59Do you want a turn?
19:00Do you want a turn?
19:02Do you want a turn?
19:23Oh, thank you.
19:24You alright?
19:25Yeah.
19:26I'm nearly finished, okay?
19:27Yep.
19:50So I'll do the paste, I'm going to try to remove a little bit more, okay?
19:57If you still feel that you want to be removed more, we need to do like a drilling and then
20:04you can come back in another time.
20:06Oh what, drilling even more of the stains you mean?
20:10Yeah.
20:11Oh no, that's fine.
20:12Yeah.
20:16I don't have to have it.
20:18Yeah.
20:19Not perfect, it's fine.
20:21Just like an oil, yeah.
20:23Yeah.
20:31No.
20:32Oh.
20:37Yeah.
20:41Oh, wow.
20:45It's great.
20:47That's cool.
20:51It feels good.
20:52That feels good.
20:54We'll see you next time.
21:46I'm more concerned with just healthy tea, they don't have to be like perfect.
21:53So is that looking fine, like that's all to you, if that looks fine?
21:58I'm going to smooth the chew for a little bit.
22:01What did you say?
22:03I'm just going to smooth it down after we do the paste.
22:07Oh, what do you mean?
22:08Just the chew here?
22:09So I just make it sharp.
22:12Oh, so there is, you think, a little bit of...
22:15Well, does it have to be fold down or is it fine?
22:18No, it's not going to be filed down, I'm just going to smooth.
22:21Okay, that's fine.
22:23Because I'm just wondering if, because it doesn't bother me.
22:26So I'm just wondering, is it better for the filling to just leave it if it's not a problem then?
22:31Or do you think it's better to file it down?
22:33If you feel it's a bit sharp, yeah, it's better.
22:36I'm not going to file it down, I'm not going to remove any filters or any tooth.
22:40Just smooth it.
22:41Because I don't want to make it unstable then if it's fine.
22:44Do you know what I mean?
22:45Because it doesn't bother me.
22:49So we don't need to do it, it's fine.
22:52It's not bothering you, you don't have to.
22:54Would that be better for the filling, do you think?
22:57No.
22:57No, it's okay.
22:58It's not a case for filling.
22:59Okay, so it's fine for me.
23:01Well, what would you recommend?
23:03I'll go with what you recommend.
23:05Do you recommend smoothing it or?
23:06No, if it doesn't bother you.
23:08It doesn't bother me.
23:09So no, we don't need to do anything.
23:11Perfect.
23:11I'll leave it then.
23:12Do you think it'll go down on its own just through chewing or?
23:17On the filling, it might be a little bit, over time.
23:20Yeah, and you don't think, what about leaving the sharp bit though?
23:24If it's sharp, I wouldn't recommend leaving it sharp because it can traumatize your cheeks,
23:30your tongue.
23:31Okay, I will smooth it down.
23:32Okay.
23:34All right.
23:34As long as it doesn't then make the filling break next week.
23:37Oh, no, no, it won't.
23:38Oh, that's good.
23:39Yeah.
23:40Because that's what I'm paranoid about.
23:41Well, that's good.
23:42I'm glad it wasn't cracked teeth or anything.
23:44Yeah.
23:45So, no, it's not.
23:46So, I'm going to do the tape now, all right?
23:49Now you can pull the tiny bit.
24:04Okay.
24:05Yes.
24:13Okay.
24:21Okay.
24:29There we go.
24:44There's a little bit here that way.
26:15All right?
26:15Yep.
26:51Okay.
27:16Okay.
27:53Okay.
27:54Okay.
28:12Right there.
28:37okay now you can have a good rinse all right and then we're going to smooth it down and then
28:42can i apply fluoride yeah yeah okay do you recommend fluoride is good to protect your teeth yes sometimes when
28:50i take the abiders out i pop a little bit of toothpaste around my mouth just is that a good
28:56one then to send a bit of fluoride in your mouth just from toothpaste yeah it's good the normal one
29:01yeah it's just the one that i'm going to use here it's a bit of the concentration of fluoride a
29:06bit higher
29:09but at home the toothpaste is fine i'm glad the um the sharp bit was nothing i always i always
29:27get paranoid
29:27it's just my tongue is always looking for trouble like because i'm so scared it's always patrolling
29:35my mouth for any changes that's okay are you all right yeah yeah no i'm glad do you know i
29:43think the gc tooth
29:44mousse is making my teeth less sensitive because that cleaning wasn't too bad oh that's good yeah
29:50there are a couple of sensitive bits they're very good for sensitivity as well yeah because i remember
29:55before i started using that i have had some cleans where i've just been jumping out of the chair the
30:00whole time oh like it's been really yeah all around but that wasn't too bad good to hear thank you
30:06you're
30:06very welcome so i'm going to play the fluoride oh yeah oh okay fluoride first yeah yeah
30:23there's nothing yeah with the brushing is okay so
30:34are you okay with no drinking water no itching for 20 minutes okay no that'll be good
30:44it's looking good all fresh oh thank you thank you so much i really appreciate it so that's it now
30:52is it
30:52like the filling is all fine and yeah oh perfect everything's good yeah thank you can we spit out
30:58the excess here oh yeah swallow them okay yeah just no rinsing okay yep no thank you so very much
31:05you're
31:05very welcome that's a really good relief and my teeth are going so well like they're straightening out
31:10very well what do you recommend um in terms of cleanings like do you recommend yeah like how often do
31:18do you think look your teeth at least twice morning and night yeah line is i would recommend
31:24twice or even three times a day yeah yeah but i mean a professional claim like what you did in
31:30here
31:30yeah well every three months for you just to remove the strain as soon as you start you know noticing
31:37the stain yeah otherwise you're gonna spend if it's every six months it's fine yeah but it will build
31:44up more stain yeah and what's staining them is it wearing these that's causing so much it could be
31:51colored foods and drinks as well yeah i mean i have had the feelings the attachments
31:57they get stain as well yeah yeah because you have been brushing right oh yeah i do twice a day
32:05and
32:05i use now a whitening act fluoride rinse as well okay like a whitening rinse oh that's good yeah at
32:12night just before i put my liners in but you don't smoke very well i don't and i don't have
32:17red wine i do
32:18eat a lot of dark chocolate though just make sure every time you eat or drink if it's not water
32:27just rinse
32:28your mouth yeah yeah and rinse your lines yeah yeah okay thank you very much for today i really appreciate
32:35the care is there anything else i could tell you today no nothing yeah yeah i'll grab my liners yeah
32:41and no they feel great i'm not going to put these in straight away i'll just leave the floor yeah
32:46yeah
32:46because at the moment now i'm nearly at the end of this like yeah and so obviously all night i
32:53wear them
32:53during the day it's a little bit i mean i try to wear them during the day but do you
33:00change every
33:01week um actually i do every two weeks every two weeks i've been a bit slower that's okay yeah but
33:07at the end of the two weeks it's so easy to get in and out and then yeah they're not
33:12very tight yeah
33:14thank you so much you're welcome well i'll probably see you next time then oh yes for sure yeah yeah
33:19like
33:19i guess i'm on week six now so this is the 10th plan i guess i'll have to come in
33:25towards the end
33:25as i'm getting at week 10 as close to have another scan yeah obviously dr erwin or yeah and then
33:32if
33:32we need to remove any more of those things we can take it oh thank you yeah okay thank you
33:36so very
33:37much enjoy the rest of your day you too bye well that was good to get that cleaning done so
33:45that's my
33:46second cleaning during this invisalign journey and it was interesting that the dentist actually said
33:51that for my teeth she's now recommending a clean every three months so um i kind of always have had
33:58in the in my head you know visit the dentist every six months so now to hear that maybe i'm
34:03on three
34:04month cleanings is like oh no but i i do sort of hear what she's saying and for some reason
34:10my teeth
34:10do seem to stain really easily whether it's the amount of dark chocolate i'm eating or whether
34:16it's the two cups of green tea i have every morning even though i do drink with a straw i
34:21do
34:21still think that it can then still stain your teeth but um but one really positive thing actually about
34:27the cleaning today is my teeth didn't feel that sensitive and i do think that's probably because
34:32i'm using the gc tooth boost like i said to the dentist i have had cleans in the past where
34:38i've just
34:38been jumping out of that chair especially at these front teeth but this time like today it really
34:44wasn't too bad there were a few sensitive bits at the top here but it really wasn't too bad at
34:49all
34:49and um and the really good news obviously is that this little sharp bit that i was feeling
34:54i mean look i didn't notice any sort of big gaping cavity or hole like i did hope i was
35:00hoping that it
35:01was just part of a filling or something and so yes it did turn out to be fine and just
35:05a sharp bit on
35:06the filling so um who knows why my tongue just found that bit but whenever my tongue finds something
35:12like that in my mouth because i'm so anxious anyway about going to the dentist i can't seem to let
35:17that
35:17go then and then it's like ah you know i can't rest till it's been checked out but anyway so
35:23that
35:23turned out to be fine so i imagine my next trip into proud smile probably will be at the end
35:30of this 10
35:30week plan so i'm currently on week six of this 10 week plan and i imagine then i'll be coming
35:35in
35:35maybe getting a scan maybe checking my teeth to see how they're tracking whether i need another revision
35:41or whether they'll finally be done
