00:00While there was a contract breakthrough last night in the Duquesne light strike, both sides have reached a tentative agreement
00:05on a new contract.
00:07News Radio KDK's Tamira Rush has details in the newsroom.
00:10Paul, the new agreement comes after more than a week of picketing by nearly 1,000 Duquesne light workers.
00:15IBEW Local 29 members walked off the job September 30th when their contract expired.
00:20The union has raised concerns about staffing, workplace safety, and health care for retirees.
00:25The proposed five-year contract could resolve the dispute, but union members still need to vote on whether to accept
00:31it.
00:32Duquesne light says several steps remain before operations return to normal.
00:36In the newsroom, Tamira Rush News Radio, KDKA.
00:39Hurricane Isaias is heading toward a likely landfall on the Gulf Coast late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
00:45Here's ABC meteorologist Lee Goldberg.
00:47Hurricane Isaias peaking this morning in intensity.
00:50Could be strong Cat 2, even borderline major hurricane.
00:52It does weaken a little bit, but still a dangerous hurricane going into the Florida Panhandle late this evening.
00:57Somewhere near Pensacola, maybe over to Destin, Florida, we'll watch that.
01:01Hurricane warnings along the coast.
01:02Watches go well inland.
01:04A storm surge of five to seven feet.
01:05Then you're looking at a half a foot of rain along the track and heavy rains into the Carolinas,
01:09even getting into the northeast by the end of the weekend.
01:12Most forecast models show three-quarters to one and a half inches of rain in the Pittsburgh area from the
01:18remnants of the storm.
01:19Allegheny County Council's Health Committee voted 5-1 Thursday to send a paid parental leave proposal back to full council
01:26for a final vote.
01:28TribLive reporting council member Suzanne Filiagi cast the only vote against the proposal.
01:33Her objection to the measure was a lack of clarity on implementation.
01:37A final vote is expected on October 20th.
01:41Vice President J.D. Vance announced on Thursday a crackdown on immigration work visas,
01:46saying Microsoft and other tech companies will be barred from using them.
01:50Our message to Microsoft is you're a great American company, but you've got to hire great American workers.
01:56The vice president also singled out nine universities, including Pitt,
02:00saying the schools are undercutting the wages of American grad students by hiring foreign students for less.
02:06A statement from Pitt says the university has received a subpoena from the Department of Labor
02:11with questions about the school's participation in visa programs.
02:15Pitt says it does so according to federal requirements.
02:18There are professions where a person could think they've seen it all,
02:22but as NewsRadio KDKA's Paul Alexander reports,
02:25a couple of Peters Township police officers may have experienced a first.
02:29The officers may or may not have known what a NITO is,
02:33but they were called to an Aldi grocery store in Washington County
02:36because a couple of customers were involved in a physical altercation over a NITO.
02:41A NITO, by the way, is a colorful, squishy toy that is designed to help kids and adults manage stress
02:46and improve focus.
02:47According to a 911 dispatcher, at least one person was slapped.
02:51And police say a 54-year-old woman from McMurray and a 49-year-old woman from Pittsburgh
02:56were both charged in connection with a fight and cited for disorderly conduct.
03:00So much for the NITO's ability to help manage stress.
