00:00Carson Anderson, 97.1.
00:03Okay, look, we got an ongoing story in Detroit with Dylan Larkin.
00:07Everybody is talking about him around the NHL,
00:10and we update you every couple days on the very latest reporting
00:14and what's being said.
00:14We call it the Detroit Red Wings Trade Center.
00:17Aggregate update blitz thingy.
00:21All right, Gator, let's start with this from David Pignotta
00:24from the fourth period at NHL Network.
00:26He's reporting that the Red Wings and Dylan Larkin on that front
00:29quote, it sounds like it's more of a futures-based package,
00:32at least right now.
00:34Is this a star-for-star type of swap?
00:37It doesn't sound like it.
00:39So a couple things here.
00:42That implies it's a general manager if he's comfortable making a trade like this
00:46for futures is making a trade thinking he's going to be around for a while
00:50to see said futures.
00:52People already are questioning whether or not Eisenman should be making this trade.
00:58Ultimately, it's his job to make the best trade for the Detroit Red Wings,
01:02whether he gets to see the fruits of the trade or not.
01:05Because if it's all for draft capital or young affiliated draft prospects
01:11that have been drafted and are playing right now still in college or whatever,
01:16like Porter Martone was last year when he was with Philly.
01:18But the point is you've got to make the best trade even if the Red Wings trade
01:25Dylan Larkin and see maybe even nothing at the NHL level in return coming back.
01:30Well, I take this into mind too.
01:33This reporter doesn't know because this has spoken to Steve Eisman.
01:36The only way he would have information is if he's spoken to sources from the other
01:40teams that are looking to talk to the Red Wings.
01:43And then what are you getting?
01:45Is he getting half the story where it's, let's say you're dealing with Minnesota.
01:49Minnesota says, well, we're only going to be giving up prospects.
01:51So if you want Dylan Larkin, it's going to have to be for prospects.
01:54You're not getting the whole story so you don't know.
01:57Because you're only getting the other team's side.
01:58You're only getting the other team's version.
02:00You're certainly not getting Steve Eisman's version.
02:01And I doubt that Chris Draper or anybody else in the hierarchy is going to leak
02:05anything to the media about what's going on.
02:08So I don't know if that's entirely accurate.
02:11Is it logical to think that that's what teams are going to offer?
02:15I think it's logical to think that if you're going with the original three teams,
02:20you know, if you're looking at whatever it was, Vegas and Minnesota and Florida,
02:24the other team, if you're going to restrict it to those teams that are ready to win
02:30a Stanley Cup now, that don't want to give up anybody from the core, of course,
02:33that makes sense that they would only give up prospects.
02:35Does that make sense for the Red Wings?
02:37Well, it depends on how deep your prospect pool is, what your draft pick is in this
02:43upcoming draft or future draft picks that you would give up.
02:46I think when you're dealing from those teams that are really good, they may not have the
02:52great prospect pool.
02:53So I'm not sure that the deal is ever going to get done with those top tier teams because
02:57they just may not have enough.
02:59Yeah, look, and I will say this, if for Steve Eisenman, if all he's getting back is prospects
03:05and draft picks and nobody that's NHL ready, you almost need the NHL media to say, well,
03:14he got a ton, even though none of it's going to be in the winged wheel this year.
03:19He got a ton.
03:19Well, because if it's a stretch, I think this town is going to revolt.
03:26It could, but there are other things that this trade is so interesting and what could
03:31end up happening, because I think you're going to, if you're going to deal with a top tier
03:35team, you're probably going to have to bring in a third team and that third team might
03:38have the NHL ready player for the players on the roster that makes sense.
03:42So keep that in mind and also keep an open mind that, you know, the move, if you end up
03:48trading Dylan Larkin for prospects, it frees up eight and a half million dollars into cap
03:52space.
03:52And that allows for either trading for another team's higher price player that they don't
03:57want.
03:58You've got prospects that you can trade and you've got money now to spend in free agency
04:03too on some of these other players.
04:05All right.
04:06Well, we will continue to monitor, but there are teams calling apparently, and there's a lot
04:11of talk.
04:12Pinota went on to say that he's heard other teams are getting involved, but Detroit is
04:17still in a tough spot.
04:45Good morning.
04:48Good morning.
04:53Good morning.
05:10Comin' Sunday.
05:19Okay, that is courtesy of the Hello Hockey podcast.
05:22He mentioned San Jose.
05:24San Jose has the number two overall pick.
05:28Could the number two overall pick be a satisfying return from San Jose,
05:35maybe with some other stuff, but somebody who is NHL ready,
05:39but not a top-tier prospect.
05:40Number two overall pick, there are some guys that are close to NHL ready
05:45at the top of this draft.
05:47Yeah, you look at the right things.
05:49Gavin McKenna, the kid who played at Penn State last year,
05:51that he'll be the top pick in the draft.
05:53And then you've got a number of guys at number two that may be there.
05:58Ivar Stenberg is the Swedish forward that's likely to go second overall.
06:04And because you play in the Swedish league, you're not throwing up crazy numbers.
06:08You can't just look at stats and say, oh, this makes sense.
06:11It's a skill set, really, that you're looking at.
06:13And this guy is supposed to be an incredible playmaker who's got great vision on the ice.
06:19He ended up with 33 points in 43 games last year.
06:23In the under-20 team, he had 18 points in 15 games last year with Sweden.
06:28But played internationally in the off-season there in the World Championships.
06:33So there's something there to like.
06:35I don't know if it's feasible.
06:37If you're San Jose, you've done so well in the draft.
06:41Maybe you want to keep going that route.
06:42And you've really mined very well the last couple of years.
06:46But the thought of adding Dylan Larkin to that team, if you're San Jose, if I were the Sharks, I'd
06:50do it.
06:51Because you've got a young team.
06:52And I haven't looked at their salary cap situation.
06:55But I think that I'm guessing they could probably handle it pretty well.
06:58But is that enough for the Red Wings in return to get the number two overall pick?
07:01One would think it probably is.
07:04Yeah.
07:05Caleb Mahaltra, who's played at Brantford, the OHL, had 84 points in 67 games.
07:11That is a stat league, by the way.
07:13And Keaton Verhoff, who is at North Dakota, is a right-hand shot defenseman who is 6'4 and over
07:21200 pounds.
07:22So he would be a guy that could put on some more weight.
07:24But also guys that could be NHL-ready.
07:26And Mahaltra's big, and he's the son of Manny Mahaltra, who played a very physical game.
07:30So there's definitely appeal there.
07:33Interesting.
07:34San Jose in the number two pick.
07:36Something to think about.
07:36In the meantime, on a Blackhawks podcast, the Blackhawks breakaway on the Chicago Sports Network,
07:41they had Frank Cervellion, hockey insider for TSN.
07:44He talked about Eisenman's challenge and what he thinks may happen.
08:19He's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the
08:25one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's
08:25the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one
08:25who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the
08:25one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's
08:25the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one
08:26who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the
08:26one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's the one who's
08:26the one who's the one who
08:34And the gentleman, if it means saying fine, yes, I don't know about you guys, and I don't, like, say
08:42this will be about, like, I just think both of the city can give you some product.
09:12Okay, Volstead, I don't know how good or bad this kid is.
09:14I just keep hearing franchise goaltender, franchise goaltender, and it sounds like he's far outperformed whatever the Red Wings thought
09:21that Kosa was going to be, and they did take Kosa ahead of Volstead in that draft.
09:24But if you can get him to throw in Charlie Strammel, would you be happy with that return?
09:29How good would this goalie have to be for you to be happy with this return?
09:33Well, I'm not interested in the goalie because the Red Wings have goalies in their system.
09:38They have several goalies in their system, and you mentioned that Kosa was drafted ahead of Volstead.
09:42And, you know, Volstead played very well last year, 2-6-1 goals against average, and had a 9-16
09:48save percentage in 35 games with the Wild.
09:51So it's already proven at the NHL level, but everything that the reporter had to say is accurate about goaltending.
09:58It changes one year to the next.
09:59They're very rare that you get this solid goaltender for, like, a 10-year block, and he's that guy.
10:05I mean, it just doesn't happen.
10:07It's just so rare.
10:09There's going to be ups and downs.
10:10And I don't know if he's light years better than Sebastian Kosa, but he's gotten the opportunity where CBass has
10:16not gotten the opportunity.
10:17And Sebastian Kosa may not even be the number one Red Wing prospect.
10:20It might be Postova or Trey Augustine, for that matter.
10:24If the Red Wings were to make a deal with Minnesota, and right now I kind of don't even want
10:29it to happen out of spite because I don't want Dylan Larkin to get his way and go to the
10:33team that he desperately wants to go to because I don't think it's fair.
10:36But let's say they do work out a deal there, and Wallstead would have to be part of it because
10:40he's their top prospect.
10:41The only reason I would do it is because I'd be able to spin either I'm spinning Wallstead off for
10:45another player or I'm bringing the third team and it's just part of that trade.
10:49Again, this is where the third team makes sense.
10:51Strammel makes a lot of sense.
10:53The former Spartan product and also played at Wisconsin.
10:55He's a bigger kid, plays with an edge, and can he be kind of like Porter Martone, I guess?
11:01In some ways, he wasn't as prolific at scoring as Martone was, but this was a guy who had over
11:06a point a game at Michigan State, and I think he had, what, 18, 19 goals in the 30-something
11:10games.
11:12I don't hate that.
11:13I feel like I'd still want something a little bit more than Strammel and Wallstead, and I'm not sure if
11:17that's asking too much.
11:19How desperate is Minnesota to get that deal done?
11:22I think Minnesota might be more desperate than Detroit.
11:24I think they might be, yeah.
11:25It could be one to keep an eye on.
11:27And that concludes the Detroit Red Wing Trade Center News Aggregate Update Blitz thingy here on Carson Anderson on 97
11:33.1.
