Transcript
00:04jared as always thank you very much for being with us on this tuesday and you've had a chance
00:08to to watch the film and let's start with what you most liked about what you guys did offensively
00:13sunday sure yeah i thought we moved the ball pretty good we scored um six out of eight drives
00:20unfortunately didn't finish quite as we wanted to in the red zone but moved the ball uh pretty well
00:24and um obviously we're able to throw it through there pretty good and uh make some plays on the
00:29field which was good to see and uh yeah i gotta gotta find a way to score on that last
00:32drive and
00:33and win that game as far as the drives that didn't end in the end zone earlier in the game
00:38what what problems led to so many field goal attempts uh probably mostly self-inflicted um i think we had
00:45a couple penalties down there i missed a throw or two um that i'd like to have back uh yeah
00:51i mean
00:51i don't know it's just it's execution and um you know you tip your cap to them certainly they did
00:57a good job defensively but i don't know if they did much in the red zone to stop us uh
01:01we can't
01:01hurt ourselves there you've talked about uh the pre-step penalties and and and how you want to
01:07take responsibility for helping to clear some of that stuff up whether you know false starts or
01:12line alignment or whatever it is how is it that you can physically or or whatever it is you know
01:19vocalize uh and lead in a way that those are corrected what is it that you have to do to
01:24correct those problems i i just got to make sure that we're we're operating at a at a uh pace
01:32that's calm and and not frantic um and it you know comes in through the headset and andrew's been
01:38tremendous but then it starts with me in the huddle of like making sure we're on the same page
01:43getting the getting the play out cleanly on the road it's loud you know it's hard to hear
01:46making sure i'm um clear in the huddle and uh guys aren't uh anxious at the line of scrimmage
01:52again i know you want to score a touchdown every drive but in the context of this season when the
01:56defense is struggling and i'm going to guess you have faith in that in that group and that side
02:00of the ball but as they're trying to clean things up do you feel pressure to score touchdowns every
02:05drive um i don't know if pressure is the right word you know we we want to we expect that
02:11out of
02:12ourselves we're a damn good offense and have really good players and um we want to score a
02:17touchdown every drive pressure too i don't know if that's the right word but um we certainly know
02:21we we need to score some points and um you know for example in this last game you know enough
02:27points
02:27would have hopefully been 33 you know if we would have scored a touchdown the last drive you know
02:31hopefully that would have been enough but um whatever it takes whatever many it is we got to
02:36find a way to do it the defense did a real nice job towards the end of the game to
02:40get you guys the
02:41ball back while that's happening is there and when they have that the play that turns it over
02:46is there somebody that you go to on the defensive side or has there been somebody that you go to
02:50on
02:50the defensive side and just kind of give them that encouragement or or your appreciation and let them
02:55know that hey great job we're now we're going to take care of it no we're not we're not really
03:02talking uh in game um you know they're they're getting the stop they're getting off the field and then
03:07we're walking down to where the punt return is going to be um and going on the field so no
03:11there's
03:11not really a conversation had between myself or anyone uh with the defense there but yeah they
03:16made that stop and we got to find what's for we got questions from fans yesterday about the last play
03:21and we understand that the defense is going to guard the sticks can you take us through that last play
03:27when you've had a chance to look at it and and what happened there uh yeah we had a play
03:33we love
03:33up up and um st brown's running the deep end cut as as number one and underneath it is is
03:39isaac and
03:40if they get depth it's it goes underneath and they did and unfortunately got 12 yards not 13 yards and
03:46was unable to convert and um yeah i would have loved to uh you know have the have the deeper
03:51option
03:51they covered it and um got to give our guys a chance to convert there and and unfortunately we
03:56weren't able to if i had to do it again would i you know throw like a one-on-one
04:00ball down the field to
04:02somebody maybe um but i think that's probably our best chance to convert was uh giving it to tesla
04:06there tip passes at line and scrimmage i can only imagine that the it's probably one of the most
04:12maddening things a quarterback has to deal with was there something that you did or that you might
04:17need to change or was that simply just right place right time for for carolina knocking down those
04:22passes how many did i have actually i don't know i'm not sure i said five during the broadcast
04:28four or five yeah i think well i mean you throw it 52 times um and you have five that's
04:3552 is
04:36probably a better sample size for two games so if i had two in one game and three in another
04:40i don't
04:41know if it feels as many um but with that said uh yeah i'm always aware of it i think
04:46when you drop
04:46back that many times they're able to kind of get a rhythm of um when the ball's coming out and
04:51where
04:51it's coming out and you know oftentimes those guys certainly in the middle they're tired they don't
04:56want to rush anymore and they start standing up and getting their hands on stuff so yeah am i
05:00going to change anything no uh it's never been something that's been an issue for me and um
05:05sometimes it happens a lot sometimes it doesn't happen at all yeah uh you had jmo on a deep ball
05:10and it looked like he didn't see it i haven't heard an explanation from him did you talk to him
05:14about
05:14what happened on that deep ball yeah i think it got caught in the lights i think that is the
05:20case
05:21speaking of which i saw a chart on the internet so i'm not sure i trust it
05:25but i but maybe you can speak to this a little bit it showed that secondaries line up deeper off
05:31the line of scrimmage against you guys than any other team and it was attributed they called it
05:35the jmo effect did you know if that's true or do you sense that that's true i don't know that
05:42that's true i don't know how that stat would be found but it um certainly teams do want to take
05:46away uh his vertical speed and um it's a threat to them and it's something that i'm sure that's
05:52one of the first things they talk about on their wednesday meetings whenever they talk to their
05:56team is that he can he can ruin a game for a defensive he can get behind them so they
06:00got
06:00to stop that and um yeah i'm sure they're aware of it boy it felt like sam laporta had a
06:04good game
06:08any thoughts on him uh no yeah i think i thought sam was great um sam's been been great he's
06:15been
06:15doing good and um i think he's you know it feels like he's getting his uh his feet underneath him
06:20again not from a physical standpoint but just from a game speed standpoint and um he looked great
06:24through training camp and then you know four games in now it feels like okay he feels you know he
06:28feels like himself again and uh has been looking good dan campbell was talking this morning with
06:33our morning show and about not looking back but moving forward and i think that he kind of sets
06:39the tone for the rest of you guys you follow the lead of the head coach without question
06:42back-to-back road games what are you most excited about in changing heading in to this week's in
06:49this week's preparation yeah i'm excited for another challenge man and and to see to see our
06:55guys stand tall again you know it's hard this league is hard every week is hard and um there is
07:01no
07:02no one feels sorry for us no one's going to come and save us it's uh about us going back
07:07to work
07:07and finding a way to to get better and improve and and for us offensively finding a way to score
07:12more points in the other team whether that's you know 14 or 40 whatever it ends up being you
07:17know we got to find that way to do that and um at times we can alleviate some of the
07:21pressure off
07:21the defense as well but by putting those long drives together and finishing them in the end zone
07:25and uh just find ways to play complementary football as well i think that'll be a big part of
07:29it they get a stop we got a score we're struggling a little bit on offense we need to stop
07:33from
07:33them so it's uh all all works together and um i am excited to watch our guys come back to
07:39work
07:39this week is there a player defensively on the other team that you're you're going to cue on
07:43and say this is a guy we got to really kind of pay attention to he sets the tone for
07:47the defense
07:49it's been buddha for a long time uh he's been there forever and i feel like he's a leader for
07:55them and um they move him around they put him in spots to make plays and um they want him
07:59around
07:59the football and uh he's he's been a great player for a long time and somebody that i got all
08:03our
08:03respect for jared i know every game's important every game is really important the term
08:07must win gets thrown around in our line of work quite a bit how important for you guys given
08:13what just happened sense of urgency to get this win sunday at arizona yeah man it'd be great it'd
08:20be big to win just like it would have been big to win this last one and it'll be big
08:23to win the
08:24the one after the bye and then the one after that we want to win them all um and it'd
08:28be nice to win
08:28off of a loss i think absolutely and they get that back in that positive momentum heading into the
08:33bye week and um feel good about it chance to plant grass in arizona a lot's been made over
08:38the years about grass versus turf and recently because of the world cup and players saw that
08:43and said hey why not have grass in all the stadiums how do you feel about that issue with
08:48the grass versus the turf yeah i think that's certainly something that um the players have
08:54been pushing for for a long time and i i'm starting to feel it now i'm in year 11 when
08:59we when we are
08:59outside on the grass your joints just feel so much better and i'm not wanting someone that's
09:04hitting the ground much or or running as much as these guys are so yeah i i certainly understand
09:08it and um it's going to be a constant battle i believe between the players and the owners and
09:13until one day hopefully it gets changed all right uh we get fan questions every week and our producer
09:20kang sifts through them and has one for jared goff this week what do we got kang all right jared
09:24this
09:24one's from kevin in northville he says jared you've been here six years now i know you're a
09:29california guy but what is the most midwest thing about you now uh probably i drive a ford f-150
09:39and uh you know i like to i like to cosplay midwest when i'm out here and uh put some
09:44country music on
09:44and get in my f-150 and and drive around you know when you're in california do you not see
09:49too many
09:50f-150s is it more like little evs or something out there yeah a lot more evs out there certainly
09:56a lot
09:56more evs it's a diesel town out here a little bit more you know yeah well jared we appreciate
10:01your time as always good luck and we'll talk again next week all right guys thanks there he is
10:07jared goff joining us here on carson anderson on 97.1 and uh you know there's a sense of calm
10:15with him
10:15gator that like he's got this but you know i think he's he's where i'm surprised he gave us as
10:23much as
10:23he did on how important this game is yeah i i am a little bit too i he's painfully aware
10:28of of what
10:29has to happen and they've got to turn things around to be more consistent and and we've said
10:34you know all day yesterday that and and too many times this year we've said that they've left points
10:39on the field they left points on the field and yet they were averaging 31 points a game which is
10:44great
10:45but yes it's true it's factual they left points on the field scoring six out of eight drives sounds
10:50great but when you have field goals and you know four of those drives you start to look back and
10:56go
10:56what can we do to make it even better all right we'll talk to the people next carson anderson 97
