00:00going on with the lions from the birchie kid from out at allen park and who joined us now on
00:0497 one
00:04but first stirring up trouble with shep yesterday huh birchie i guess that's what everyone's framing
00:11it huh i was just trying to gain an understanding of the defense but it turned into quite the viral
00:17moment huh it was great you know seriously because you approached it exactly that it was a very it
00:22was it was clinical and it was a valid question um and i thought i thought shep got a little
00:28stubborn in the moment to be honest with you um a little uh so what's up what's the news today
00:36out
00:36there well look uh tally williams is going to play that's obviously good news for this team he had a
00:43little minor foot injury at the end of last week's game but we saw him out there at practice today
00:48and yesterday talked to him in the locker room yesterday he's good to go and that's great news
00:52because he's been one of one of four defensive linemen who really has been a force so far for
00:57this defense along with hutch and and aleem and gill howard so that's positive um we we won't i can
01:02confidently say we won't see brian branch or kate mays on the field this sunday but i do expect both
01:08those guys to be ready to go by the packers game out of the bye any other surprises we might
01:14see from
01:14players that we haven't seen a whole lot of so far this season because dan campbell did say that
01:19you know you're going to take a look at some other players who does that who is he implying or
01:24what do you infer yeah i mean he has come out and said they want to give keith abney a
01:29bigger role
01:29and i you know i think they see some flexibility in him obviously he played mostly outside corner at
01:34arizona state but they viewed him when they drafted him as more of a nickel and
01:37campbell has even suggested that he could mix in at safety so i think we'll see abney play some more
01:43snaps on sunday they think he's a really instinctive smart player and if there's two things among
01:48many others his defenses lack so far it's instincts and smart so look it's a lot to ask a rookie
01:54drafted
01:55in the fifth round with minimal experience to help cure some of what ails your defense but they're
02:00hoping that he can give them a spark on sunday and then dan also mentioned jalen mills as a potential
02:05player who might get more snaps on sunday i don't know how how encouraging that is i mean that's just
02:10kind of a reserve safety who's bounced around the league but keith abney could give them a spark i do
02:15i do
02:15think a popular name we've had on the show this week is jimmy rolder he only had seven snaps on
02:20defense on sunday night but he did have three tackles do you think he gets more of a role
02:26yeah he's interesting because obviously he pops with one of his first snaps he gets that tackle
02:30for loss in the backfield now that really was tylic williams play in fact tylic even said yesterday
02:35he's lucky i tripped like i gift wrapped that tackle for loss for him tylic ended up tripping over
02:40the guard's leg and and rolder was right there to make tackle and when i asked rolder about that
02:45later he was like yeah dude that was that was all tylic i just happened to be there if you
02:49notice
02:49rolder's snaps basically disappeared after he was guilty of a misread on the panthers first touchdown
02:56he was in that linebacker with campbell and they ran that toss to chubba hubert chuba hubbard which
03:02one is it i never even know it's chuba hubbard it's chuba hubbard yeah yeah it's a dangerous name
03:09it's a dangerous name voice um but rolder was saying if you go back and look at that play it
03:14starts with my eyes seeing the pitch working over the top he said ultimately he's got to be there he
03:19got beat to the spot by a center to fill that gap and that just can't happen i also think
03:24levi
03:24was guilty on that play i think is he was guilty on that play and that's kind of representative
03:29of how a lot of missed assignments are happening at once and that to me stems from bad coaching but
03:34um you know it's hard to say if we'll see more of rolder i i think he was playing well
03:39early in
03:39that game and uh he lost maybe some faith when when he when he had a misfit on the panthers
03:45first
03:45touchdown do you think this laporta story with the contract is a real story or we're just in
03:49the negotiation phase and it's no big deal yet it still strikes me as negotiation phase and
03:55negotiation tactics and we also know the lions have the franchise tag it's kind of a safety net here
03:59if they do want to use that at 17 and a half million for next year so i'd be shocked
04:04if
04:04sam laporta a isn't extended you know in the near future and i'd be even more shocked if he winds
04:10up
04:10off this team i know i know some people have speculated or theorized that maybe he'd be a
04:14player worth parting with and a deal for a proven dv i don't think that's a wise move for this
04:20team
04:21you know the lions for better or worse need to be built on a strong offense and we saw what
04:25this
04:25offense looked like when you removed sam laporta for the final eight games last season it really
04:30crumbled and he wasn't the only reason for that the all the deteriorating offensive line
04:34played a part two but he has an outsized impact running game and passing game on lifting this
04:39offense and if you remove sam laporta you might become just merely a above average offense and if
04:45you acquire in the process a proven corner are you then just a below average defense i don't think in
04:51that case you're any better as a team okay i've been telling the audience this week i've taken my
04:55brad bach card away because of the joey porter jr trade and the lions not landing him but i don't
05:00think
05:00he's i don't think he's a moron uh just i'm disappointed in that but because i think he's
05:06still pretty smart i think they're going to make a trade for somebody in the secondary am i way off
05:11here or not no i think you're bang on i would be surprised if they aren't adding someone particularly
05:19at corner before the november 10th deadline and like i'll go so far as to say that after dan campbell
05:25came out and publicly confirmed their rather aggressive pursuit of joey porter jr which was
05:31his way of acknowledging their deficiencies in the secondary and also sort of confirm their ongoing
05:36search for help it's fair to say that if brad holmes doesn't add a defensive back who can move
05:43the needle by november 10th i think he will have failed his most critical assignment of this season
05:48this team is going nowhere no matter how good its offense becomes or already is without more talent
05:56in the secondary and if brad knows they need it and can't go get it then yeah i think that
06:01would be a
06:01a failure on his part
06:06microphone works uh not wanting to throw any disrespect to the defense here but uh offensively
06:11they do have more to give how do they get the running game going
06:16yeah that's key you know it's interesting and drew petstein's return to arizona
06:20they really do have to hearken back to the principles that compelled dan campbell to hire
06:26petstein in the first place like he devised those downhill diverse russian attacks in arizona and
06:32that's really why campbell brought him here and they've they've gotten away from that a little bit
06:36in part because they've been chasing so many deficits and you can thank the defense mostly for
06:40that so um i was just talking with dan about this and this interview will air on our airwaves for
06:45the
06:46pregame show on sunday and he's like we're just you know we're going to give the ball to gibbs
06:51we're going to let it we're going to let him get going and it's not to say they're going to
06:54abandon
06:54the pass and and they're going to become entirely run centric i don't want to paint that picture at
06:58all but there's a commitment for sure on sunday after they passed just or passed 52 times ran just 15
07:04last week to re-establish who they are offensively all right do they get the win sunday
07:14ah yeah i think they do but i i don't i don't feel great about this matchup i know jacoby
07:21brissette
07:22feels like he's right for the picking but i look at a team that has a number one receiver and
07:27maybe
07:27the best tight end in the nfl and i look at the two pieces that have plagued the lions defense
07:32the
07:33most and i worry about their ability to contain those guys so they might have to score a lot to
07:36keep up with the cardinals even though it is brissette taking the snaps on sunday sounds
07:41familiar uh when can we see you on tv you'll see me on fox two lines game day live sunday
07:47morning
07:47at 10 a.m along with jennifer hammond and the great the one the only bob lozhnowski awesome cool we
