00:00Oh, it certainly was for those Bills fans.
00:02Oh, that's a way to open up a stadium.
00:04Good morning, or morning, 97.1, Jim Costa, John Jansen, Heather Park, Gov and Greg behind
00:11the glass.
00:12The phone lines are open.
00:13You can start to complain now.
00:15Yes, vent.
00:16We're here for you, because we're going to vent over the next four hours.
00:20That was embarrassing.
00:23It was embarrassing from start to finish, and I'll just let you know how things went
00:28in the Jansen house last night.
00:30I'm watching the game with my father-in-law.
00:33Opening drive, obviously, they go, what, 85 yards, 75 yards, and score.
00:39Easy.
00:39And I thought, I actually said the words, like, well, you know, there's a lot of teams
00:44that they're really good with the scripted drive.
00:49Yep, right.
00:52It didn't stop there.
00:54The next one, like, maybe their script was just 75 plays long.
00:59Maybe they, they, they crack the code.
01:01Everybody says, hey, you know, that scripted drive that you get off script, but they never
01:04got off script.
01:06Okay.
01:06The first, let's just start with the first drive.
01:08And I know we're going to get into everything.
01:10The game plan was to not have any contain on Josh Allen, and then sit in man coverage so
01:18that when he does get on the edge, he's chasing you downfield.
01:21Your lead blocking for him.
01:23Your head's turned in man coverage.
01:27I'll tell you what.
01:29Great job by the Buffalo receivers of continuing on their routes.
01:33Like, that was what they were doing to block the, the, the, the, the defensive backs.
01:37Like, they weren't physically blocking them.
01:39They were just saying, hey, you know, come on this way.
01:42Follow me.
01:43And there's no one there.
01:47All the ways that could have gone wrong.
01:49It did.
01:50They started that game with a whimper.
01:53Both sides of the ball.
01:53The offense, three of the first four drives are short and punt and it's dumb stuff.
01:59It's pre-snap penalties.
02:01It's taken a sack.
02:03Cause why do we have a tight end blocking their best defensive end?
02:06Yeah.
02:06So, so I know the defense deserves most of the blame, but they started with nothing on
02:11either side of the ball.
02:12It's 21, nothing.
02:13It's 28, seven.
02:15It's a whimper.
02:16Forget about hanging in and fighting with Buffalo.
02:18That is the class of the AFC.
02:20That's a real Superbowl contender.
02:22You want to talk about what we learned?
02:25That's what it's supposed to look like.
02:27And we look like this.
02:28We're not a serious contender.
02:32No.
02:32And it just, it was, it was worse than you could ever imagine.
02:41And this is on top of, and I was listening to you and Rico on my way home from, from
02:46picking
02:46up Jack from football and you had the breaking news that Ed Oliver, their best defensive player
02:55was injured in warmups, mere moments before inactives came out.
03:01What a gift.
03:02They rushed him in and all of a sudden, Hey, well, you know, we, I don't, who knows?
03:07They said something about his hip.
03:09I don't care what it is.
03:10I just was thinking that that's a game changer.
03:12That's an opportunity.
03:13The, the, the lions were just gifted.
03:16The fact that Ed Oliver is not playing in this game.
03:20It didn't matter.
03:22Insert anybody else.
03:25And, and I just, I can't believe that there was no response.
03:30There was no, there, there was just no recognition or change or shift.
03:37It just, now we expected that the offense would score some points at some point, but I did
03:44not see 200 yards on the ground against this lions defense.
03:49What did we say?
03:50The one thing that the lions can hang their hat on is they can stop the run with their front
03:55seven to the tune of 203 yards.
03:59Allegedly, they could stop the run.
04:01And now that felt like last year.
04:02And you know, we were bitching about last year was Calvin Shepard's defense.
04:05What is the identity of this defense?
04:07What are they supposed to be?
04:09Cause I'll tell you what they are an abomination.
04:12They've given up 915 yards through two games.
04:17It's the most since the 08 lions.
04:19Anybody remember a quick history lesson?
04:22How did that 08 team do?
04:24So again, they have given up nearly a thousand yards through two football games, 71 points.
04:31It's a disaster.
04:33They can't run man.
04:35They can't run zone.
04:36There's no run fits.
04:37The coverage is a blown coverage left and right.
04:39What's the point of having all these veteran defensive backs?
04:42If players are running wide open on third and long down the field.
04:49Or I mean, yeah, it's when you have a receiver, Josh Palmer stud, right?
05:00Well, yeah.
05:00I mean, everybody knows just Palmer.
05:03And I saw, I called it at the snap.
05:07I'm like, eyes are in the wrong spot.
05:09And then all of a sudden, Josh, if you're going to make a mistake, make it against Tyler
05:14Shuck.
05:15Make it against anyone else.
05:17Just not against Josh Allen because he sees it all.
05:21We talked about him being a heady quarterback issue.
05:24Very smart.
05:24Very intelligent.
05:25He sees the eyes of the of the the safeties and they're going to follow the tight end
05:29on the underneath route.
05:31And then all of a sudden you have Josh Palmer wide open.
05:36No one covering him walking backwards into the end zone.
05:41And I think it was Maddox that came screaming down.
05:43Yeah.
05:43And then he's looking back like, wait, you're supposed to have my back.
05:46I don't know whose fault it was, but you can't have blown coverage like that.
05:49This isn't Pop Warner.
05:51This isn't high school.
05:52This is the National Football League.
05:53This is a big spot.
05:54Yeah.
05:57Well, the mafia had a great way to open up their stadium.
06:01Bumping shindig, as some would say.
06:03So troubling thing.
06:05It looked like the exact same game that was played here two years ago.
06:09And I talked yesterday about it being a circle moment for the Lions in terms of showing that
06:13they're better.
06:14They're not that game.
06:16Guess what?
06:16They trailed 14 nothing.
06:18They trailed 14 nothing last night.
06:20That game here at Ford Field two years ago.
06:22They trailed by 21 at one point in that game.
06:25It was 21 at one point last night.
06:28It's just an abomination, the defense.
06:30It is.
06:31It was 27 at one point, too.
06:33Whether it be, you know, scheme, coaching coordinator, philosophy, players themselves.
06:42And now that was late in the year, two years ago.
06:45Yeah.
06:45McNeil got hurt in that game late third quarter.
06:47Hutch wasn't there.
06:48So you can see McNeil played in the game.
06:51Okay.
06:51They were trailing in that game big time when he was still in there.
06:55Hutch didn't play.
06:56Hutch was there last night, but you had Branch and Joseph in that game then.
06:59But it's the same result.
07:01But that was the same philosophy.
07:02I don't think Dan Campbell cares about the defense.
07:04I don't.
07:06I don't think he has any influence.
07:07I think he hired a friend and he hired a guy from within.
07:10We talked at the end of last year, should they make a change at defensive coordinator?
07:13And I know a lot of people last night were trying to fire Calvin Shepard and a lot of
07:17heat for Brad Holmes.
07:17And I understand both.
07:20Well, we like the guys in that room.
07:22Right.
07:22Yeah.
07:23Can we get Dave Burkett online, too?
07:24Yeah.
07:26Because I don't know what you like about that secondary.
07:28And I'm glad that Dave was pressing him on it because it's going to continue to have
07:33egg on his face.
07:34You like this group.
07:35What do you like about him?
07:38Now, what I was going to say, Tom, you brought up the Bills game a couple years ago and eerily
07:41similar.
07:41That became a red flag.
07:42That team won 15 games, but that was a red flag.
07:45This team is only in week two.
07:47I expect the offense to get the guys right up front as they get healthy.
07:51I don't know that this defense is going to be good enough to do anything of note.
07:54And it may be the red flag, even if they go on to win 12 or 13 games.
07:58But this is the red flag.
08:00This is what's going to happen when you play good teams.
08:02Hell, it's what happened when you play Tyler Shuck.
08:04Yeah.
08:04You play defense like this, and it's not going to matter the level of team that you're playing.
08:10Now, OK, Tennessee, that's a completely different story.
08:13But do you think that Arizona, what they did to the Chargers could be done to the Lions,
08:20the Jets, Carolina, Carolina scored 37 points against the Bears in a loss, but they scored
08:2737 points and I just I know what today.
08:32Some of it's going to be, hey, we're one in one.
08:35This is always supposed to be a loss.
08:36Win the next couple games.
08:38The concern to me is what this says about their status as a contender.
08:43They aren't one, regardless of if they settle in and beat some of the tomato cans on the
08:49schedule, right?
08:52I mean, yeah, there's no question like this is this.
08:54This is the game.
08:54Well, like we talked about yesterday, right now, OK, not the biggest game of the year
08:57because you're going to play, you know what, 15 more, but it's it's it's one we're going
09:02to reference for the entire season.
09:04If you do go on to beat those other teams that aren't contenders, they're probably not
09:11even playoff contenders.
09:13What's it going to mean?
09:14Because the performance that you put up against a super a legitimate Super Bowl contender was
09:20one that you weren't even present in the game.
09:21I was listening to some some national radio shows this morning and they had somebody on
09:27that was at the game, a Buffalo Bills fan.
09:31And he said he actually said these words.
09:34It felt like a preseason game.
09:37And boy, did that sting.
09:38He said by the third quarter, it felt like it was a preseason game.
09:42Yeah, like I'm not putting any stock in like grit won't quit.
09:45We came back and made it done.
09:48Twenty eight to seven.
09:49Yeah.
09:52And his dad said at halftime, it was a lot of little stuff.
09:56Stuff wasn't exactly the word.
09:57No, it was same first letter.
09:59It was the little stuff, the medium stuff and the big stuff last night for the Lions.
10:04Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, ninety seven, ninety seven.
10:06Got some opening thoughts.
10:07We have a lot to say.
10:09So do you guys.
10:09We'll get phone calls in the mix.
10:11It's ninety seven one.
