Will the Lions and LaPorta still come to terms on a new contract?
Transcript
00:01so maybe this everybody thought of this and i i just woke up to this
00:08um or maybe it's a unique observation a report came out over the weekend that the lions
00:14and sam laporta had broken off contract talks after several weeks of discussion
00:21was there any reporting did kang or gator did you guys see
00:26was there any reporting as to when the contract talks broke off
00:31no i just saw over the weekend that they decided to i assumed it happened very recently because
00:37that's why the report came out that they were continuing to talk until right now we were no
00:41longer talking that's what i assumed did joey porter jr get traded wednesday night i think it
00:47was wednesday night into thursday i'm almost positive if you were having contract talks
00:55with sam laporta and he wasn't going to take the money that you had war chested for him
01:02and you contracts talks had broken off and joey porter jr was available for let's say a two and a
01:10four
01:10to have to beat dallas's offer uh was it two is a two and a six sorry two and a
01:16five two and a five
01:19and laporta didn't want your money
01:23all the more reason you trade for joey porter and give him the money
01:30right now maybe they were thinking the deal was going to get done right up until sunday that report
01:36came out sunday right laporta i believe so that's why it's saturday or sunday one of the two if if
01:41they knew before they didn't pay the price to get joey porter jr and they could have just given him
01:49laporta's money wouldn't that have made more sense well there's a difference in the money
01:56because laporta would laporta's deal would likely be four years and 80 million dollars somewhere in
02:03that range yep got it probably a little bit more but four and 80 the deal for porter jr is
02:08closer to 30
02:09million yep and you'd take that 80 million and put it in the package to go to joey porter
02:15spend the money elsewhere right but i think you're assuming they want joey porter long term i don't
02:21think that's necessarily the case i'm making that assumption i am making the assumption because i would
02:25want him long term i think around here everyone would have been happy with a rental right sure a
02:31second and a fifth gets it done but if you had the if that's what it took and you didn't
02:38want
02:39you didn't have the money and then laporta doesn't want your money that might make it a little bit
02:43easier to afford the money do you understand am i making this am i making the my point clear am
02:49i
02:49articulating this correctly do you guys get what i'm saying or no i think i know what you're saying
02:55i don't know if it matters if you budgeted money for laporta and laporta didn't want it you could pivot
03:00and give it to joey porter jr you could pull what the tigers did with miguel cabrera yeah oh max
03:06you
03:06don't want it here we go miggy take the money yeah i think just the obviously you're just assuming
03:11but i'm assuming they don't want porter jr long term so that's why the money doesn't matter if
03:15they gave it to if they weren't giving it to laporta they weren't going to give it to porter
03:18jr anyway it's probably a reasonable assumption that they didn't want him long term because
03:21apparently they didn't even want him short term so 248-539-9797 let's get back to your open line
03:28calls we go to justin you're next on 971 hello justin hey how you guys doing today okay
03:35thanks for taking the call uh i i know that we got a bunch of problems with the defense and
03:40everything else and there's a lot to blame but as far as i'm concerned the way the offense has
03:45been running and these play calls that we've been getting out of pet seeing are just not up to par
03:49for me i mean the amount of times we ran it on first and 10 right up the middle with
03:54you know the
03:54same predictability we've had every game since we've started it's just not working and it forces
04:00us to throw on second and third down and everyone knows we're doing that and even at the end of
04:04the
04:04game you know taking the short the short route tom and ross short of the sticks on fourth down it's
04:10just it's laughable and i just don't think the offensive play calling has been great so far
04:17yeah i don't have as much of a problem with it but your votes are in
04:23i want to say jmo he finally came to life last night and it was good to see him catching
04:28the ball
04:28i mean that catch at the end of the uh first half was just a beauty and i'd love to
04:34see him get going
04:34more but yeah i just want a little a little less predictability with the offense and we got to use
04:39those the weapons and you know even get the ball to gibbs in space is all i ask
04:47i mean jmo's a dynamic player he had two huge drop passes last night they're massive the lines
04:56offense is in the top five in the league and scoring he's chomping the defensive coordinator
04:59and he's champing the wide receiver his votes and two huge drops last night yeah the the first
05:06one's in a second drive perfectly thrown deep pass from golf uh maybe i don't know was it too
05:13much of a line drive throw looked like it was right there in stride could have been an 89 yard
05:19touchdown um it's an incomplete pass and then he had the one on the second and 14 that threw it
05:26and
05:26he had to jump for it but it literally went right between his hands it was a perfectly thrown ball
05:32he
05:32has problems catching the ball with his hands i know that sounds weird because he's a wide receiver
05:36but even that deep ball that the caller mentioned that he did catch that was a body catch
05:40he's really got to work on catching i've said this before i'll say it again he came in the league
05:44he
05:45was never an elite hands catcher like i'm not saying brown you saw the one he snagged right
05:49how strong are his hands catches it watches the ball go into his hands brings it in jmo's just not
05:55that type of receiver and he's just got to get better at it and especially when the deep ball
05:59because that's what you're here for big plays and you can't let those go through your hands
06:04and as far as petting's concerned you know offensive coordinators when games are over
06:10they regret a bunch of calls too i mean they're not going to be perfect at the end the job
06:16is to
06:16put the ball in the end zone he did not have his best game last night and i guess if
06:20you want to
06:21give him the chump for that i would argue at a far better game than the other coordinator
06:27248-539-9797 chris is in battle creek and next hello chris hey guys uh you guys already touched on
06:36it a little bit about uh laporta's contract situation basically per nbc sports they had contracts uh for
06:47the first four weeks of the season and they started to heat up on the second and third but yesterday
06:53they
06:54on laporta's side they broke it off um for whatever reason and then there was a i don't know
07:01which uh reporter it was but they asked him about it and he cut the interview off um after he
07:07was
07:07are you talking about laporta cut the interview off yeah um i'm trying to i don't remember if it was
07:13dave burkett or if it was another guy i don't know somebody somebody asked him about the contract
07:20and he wouldn't answer it yeah they were they asked him a few questions and then when they asked
07:26him about the contract he just ended the interview but to kind of create a solution instead of just
07:33call and be like this person needs to be fired this person needs to go like we're all upset the
07:38defense
07:38is atrocious but what if this contract negotiation breaking down can kind of be a little gift and a
07:47what if we can take this over this next couple of weeks take some of these oh and four teams
07:54or
07:55you know like the texans you know titans or whatever what if we we can uh package him with
08:01a pick or maybe even jamo or something and get a derrick stingley jr a legeria sneed a jamel dean
08:10or
08:10try to pry soft gardener from indy i haven't looked at anybody's contract situations you know if any of
08:16those guys are in the last year of their contract um i didn't get that far because i because he's
08:22him being in the last year of his contract i feel like nobody would sign a good player that they
08:27have
08:27in their contract at a reasonable price for a free agent to be tight end when you're oh and four
08:32and and and quite frankly i don't know they'd have to love sam laporta and know his asking price like
08:37if you're if you're a team that's not winning why would you want a rental player
08:44yeah i mean there's going to be a lot of in the nfl there's a lot of moving parts and
08:48there's a lot
08:49of things that kind of got to come together even in the simplest trade so um most likely if something
08:57like that were to happen uh there'd be a higher percentage chance for like a laporta in a pick
09:02for some guy like trying to mix in other guys would be just kind of like fanboy kind of stuff
09:07in your
09:07head you look like you're going to jump out of your seat over there no i actually had a little
09:11stretch here but i will say this but derrick stingley um derrick stingley jr houston's own four
09:17right yeah stingley agreed to a uh a new contract uh recently um but he's got three more years left
09:25on the deal 27 28 and 29 uh that'll pay him 20 million dollars each of those three seasons
09:33if let's see the the cap hit the dead cap on it for 2027 would be 51 million dollars
09:41but houston's going nowhere would they be willing to move stingley for draft picks and this is a guy
09:49that this would be an f them picks move this would you'd have to give him a first round pick
09:53and then
09:53some to get derrick stingley jr because the contract he's under is actually that's that's a doable contract
10:01when you're talking about for the team that's an inherit that inherits him has to pay 20 21 and 21
10:06million dollars why why would houston trade him if houston wants to pivot teams that are 0-1-4 need
10:13to
10:13shake things up they usually trade players who are at the end of their contracts not the beginning
10:18i understand that but if you can get more capital you might want to make a move like that because
10:23they've already got money tied up to their two defensive ends i'd be shocked but i've been shocked
10:28before i've been shocked i was shocked last week so um maybe i maybe uh i would certainly hope that
10:35they would call but if i'm if i'm doing this show in houston i'm thinking hell no but you're not
10:40no i'm
