00:39uh the seattle mariners they have fired their manager they have they i they kept i think their
00:45general manager even though he was like yeah they got only fired their manager they made him go out
00:50and tell everyone he was fired beg pardon he walked out and said i am no longer the manager of

00:58mariners and talked for like four minutes and gave like a hole the media yeah is this like an 80s
01:04firing you remember firing it was like yeah oh my gosh like kids don't remember yeah there's no way
01:10john remembers this john i know john's like working right now yo what's up okay there are old press
01:16conferences of like the 80s when coaches would get fired and then they would go out there and have a
01:20press conference about their firing with the guy who fired him it was wild back in the day that
01:26sounds amazing it is unreal replace in la because that was definitely a thing and they would just
01:31sit there go this guy's a good guy we just didn't get it done all right thank you like and
01:35they would
01:35just answer questions and it was this whole thing it was a very bizarre you look back on it now

01:41one of the most bizarre sets of circumstances ever it's like when you see the uh the old clip what

01:46it of uh ben hogan or somebody like finishing the putt and everybody races onto the green to like to
01:52take his ball like people did that and go like just bizarre things in sports that is one of them
01:57where you would go out and have a press conference with your owner and and general manager or whatever
02:04about losing the job but i did not know that about the mariners manager yeah so the mariners looking for
02:10a new manager adam jude who is of the seattle times he wrote possible replacements now he writes
02:17to be clear this appears highly unlikely vote would almost certainly be number one on the mariners
02:25wish list number one on any team's list probably if he were available but that's a big if vote the
02:32al manager of the year in 2024 and 25 has led the guardians to the al central title in all
02:37three years
02:37as a manager and he has reportedly signed a multi-year extension before the 2025 season vote has strong
02:43times strong ties to the puget sound area his wife is from olympia and the family lives in olympia during
02:50the off season vote was the mariners bullpen coach in 2023 and was in line to take over as seattle's
02:57bench coach along scott alongside scott service in 2024 before the guardians hired him as manager
03:05presuming vote is still under contract for cleveland in 2027 it would require some sort of a trade manager
03:10trades are rare though not unprecedented the mariners famously traded lou pinella to tampa
03:15for all-star left fielder randy winn in october 2002 so he he goes you know again seems highly
03:24unlikely in this case but what what would be the guardians motivation to move on from one of the
03:29sports best managers the guardians clearly believe their manager is worth something one of the arguments
03:37that it was given here i read through this and i read through the responses apparently the the
03:42seattle mariners do not pay exceedingly well for for managers so that's why it's it is bizarre over
03:47there that you have a general manager i think did not get fired he said well if i lose my
03:50job today it's
03:51on me because john told us before that general managers are the ones set in the lineups now even
03:57though the general manager of the cleveland guardian said no that's not how it is well it might not be

04:01way here maybe it's that way in seattle so they might not pay well it's just this thing where you
04:08go back to this guy that lives in the area i don't know how far away olympia is to seattle

04:13to seattle one time uh probably pretty close i would guess so if they're if they're in that area
04:22i'm i'm i guess i'm grateful that they don't spend a lot of money on managers because remember they
04:27tried to pry mike churn off out of here over in new york a couple of years ago with the

04:33thank god they weren't able to do that and now you have a manager who is a again he won't

04:40a third time it just seems to be highly unlikely but there's no doubt his his overall um what would
04:49you call it just the approval rating and baseball being able to do this like it was no easy task

04:55come in after terry francona and keep the ship going we were wondering going into that first
05:00season like could we be can we be an 80 win baseball team is he 40 he might be 40

05:07one year removed from playing right so so this was considered by some people a a reach to hire this

05:27way with the world all right steven like i think that like tony vitello was a much riskier move for

05:37talking about is going from terry francona right a world series champion who had you know also helped
05:45the guardians get all the way to he'll go down as one of the top guardians managers of all time

05:51to then this francona completely just recently out of baseball an unknown i remember us having
05:57these conversations like is this guy even going to get us to 500 this year we didn't know yeah and
06:01you know that you make you bring up a hell of a point because you see this happen we see

06:06happen a lot in high school football like guys are around for 20 years and they're like i'm stepping
06:11down it's been a lot it's been fun and they usually know when to step down they kind of see

06:17like okay we got not a lot in the reserves right now this is the best time and then they

06:24pick or help pick this successor and the successor usually doesn't have a lot of success either he
06:30does either he just can't get him going or he kind of does an impression of his of his boss

06:35steven vote he he didn't work for francona did he before this okay no kevin cash was okay they're
06:43very just making sure similar in the way that things happen for them you know former catchers
06:47that were not really everyday guys had an all-star bid in there but his vote was a catcher he

06:53a bench coach for a year so he was a bullpen coach in seattle boom and then he was yeah
06:58the manager
06:59here in cleveland in cleveland so that is a very risky thing i mean taking over for the guy
07:05and being and i we do believe that terry francona had a hand in choosing steven vote is that not
07:10correct i think he had a say a blessing maybe and like yeah that's the next guy there you go
07:16so it is it's not the exact type of thing but you know there's there is a lot of pressure

07:22we're talking about three straight postseason appearances you have a young team here uh we
07:28understand like this is this man is very very very very very good at his job i mean he's he's
07:33prone
07:33to making mistakes every single day because you you play every single day but he's extremely good
07:38at this job and i i give credit to everybody in the front office i give credit to churn off
07:44and
07:44antinetti and him but he's done it he's done remarkably about him you got to think right now
07:49he's still in the throes of what would be probably the worst it's the worst he's going to be as

07:55manager right yeah just because of his you know amount of time that he's been like he hasn't learned
08:03from the mistake he hasn't made enough mistakes to learn from the mistakes well there's been there's
08:07been two scenarios where i think i've i've started to get critical with him and one was the angels
08:13series last year where jose got hit and i thought there should have been a retaliation yeah there was
08:19that and then there was um there was a situation this year where we started to say he sounded like
08:24started to sound like kevin stefanski and both of those things he's proven to be right on we've
08:28proven to be i've proven to be the idiot and so so many of us we all love vote okay
08:32we know that
08:32what we're what i'm wondering is are we dismissing that another team could poach him no but this is
08:38the first time i'm glad he sent this this is the first time i even thought about it i don't
08:42know why
08:43like mike churn off every ever since we heard about churn off and like the mets are coming after him

08:48like oh gosh he's from the air like we know his father like his father's a legend in radio
08:52like oh gosh this is this could be bad and then he stayed and ever since then we're just like

08:59he's good we're good we're all good like you could i could say the first year definitely a fluke for
09:06vote right if you're just looking from the out if you're a guy that just looks at the numbers on
09:11paper and doesn't hadn't watched all the games right and maybe even the second year though the way
09:16the tigers collapsed and all that but it's three years in a row now and this is technically on paper
09:23his worst season right yeah wins wise and he still won the division like the worst he's done is win
09:28the division you would need like do we think the guardians they value manager so much that they
09:35would go above and beyond and give them a huge raise yes or do they think well we just plopped
09:40steven vote in this role and it worked out we could just go find the next guy i assume he's

09:44under contract austin hedges the manager but i'm serious okay i understand what you're saying
09:51this is not a team that as of right now can feasibly pay a lot of players like the only
09:55team i would i
09:56would even consider it with if we're talking about trading players for a manager would be the dodgers
10:02or net like i gotta have the right guy to press the button for the young guys on this team
10:07you you have to firmly believe with the amount of youth that you've brought up over the last couple
10:11of years if you didn't if you had somebody else from steven vote other than steven vote this could
10:14be an out and out disaster i mean this could be giants s the giants are a disaster right now
10:19this could be an out and out complete mess right now so you you gotta give that type of credit
10:26and it does make us beholden to him and all that really does is up his price i mean we're

10:30about steven vote like we're talking about college football coach now right and so what i'm wondering
10:34is is this the team that would up the ante and do whatever it took to to keep the manager

10:40don't know his contract situation right and we don't even know how much he's paid but aren't we all
10:44assuming that he's probably one of the lower paid or because baseball i bet he's one of the better
10:50paid he made four million dollars oh that that would be higher than i thought how the hell did you
