00:00by the offense and the way they stepped up tonight.
00:02Steven Vogt, Guardians won last night.
00:05It's a 2-2 series.
00:07Steven Vogt doing a good job.
00:082-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
00:10I'll just ask you.
00:11Just ask you.
00:13It's results-based.
00:14They won the last two games.
00:15They're back in this series.
00:16Is Steven Vogt doing a good job?
00:17Kenny, if you...
00:18Do we send him back to...
00:19You know I'm a Steven Vogt defender.
00:21Are we...
00:21I don't know why I need to defend him.
00:23He's a two-time manager of the year.
00:24Back-to-back.
00:25He's almost Tom Amansky.
00:26He's almost achieved Amansky figures.
00:29Real quick.
00:30I think he's doing...
00:32Yes, there's...
00:33Obviously, there's going to be moves that are made that are chess moves.
00:36I think Will Venable has done a great job.
00:38All right?
00:38That said, I think Steven Vogt's doing a fine job.
00:41I mean, if we're talking about results-based,
00:43everything's results-based in the playoffs in Major League Baseball.
00:46I can't...
00:46There are trends in the regular season.
00:48I can totally understand it.
00:50Everything's about getting results in the postseason.
00:51It's a short time.
00:53Go out there.
00:54Win the game.
00:54They won the games.
00:55It's 2-2.
00:56That's simple.
00:56If you would have gauged social media in the first hour and a half of that game,
01:00before the eruption in the sixth inning, that had us all going nuts,
01:05you would have thought we had the worst manager in baseball.
01:08I could not believe...
01:09Well, it's like every game, to be honest with you.
01:11It happens.
01:12It's not like we have not been, as Guardians fans, as Cleveland baseball fans,
01:17as Indians fans...
01:18Fine.
01:19If you're too young for the 90s, then step right up for the 2000s,
01:23because we go to the playoffs every other year.
01:24Even Ron Darling started the series with...
01:27It seems like we're here every other year with the Guardians,
01:30because we are virtually...
01:31I mean, it's 8 of 11 years.
01:32It's 15 of 30, I think it is.
01:35So, you know, you can set your watches to Cleveland baseball in the postseason.
01:41And yet, every year, we act like we've never been in the postseason before,
01:44as if these games don't go haywire.
01:47No series just goes by the book, like,
01:49oh, we have our pitching matchups, those are going to be our pitchers.
01:52And even today, it looks amazing for tomorrow, right?
01:56For tomorrow, it's now 8 o'clock at night.
01:58I'm going to be settled in Chicago watching that game,
02:01so I'm always going where the games aren't.
02:03But I'm going to be enjoying looking for a Cleveland bar,
02:07watching that game.
02:08And yet, today, it looks like, yeah, we got Gavin Williams.
02:11Who knows?
02:11Gavin Williams might face nine batters, and then here we go.
02:14It's a bullpen-a-palooza.
02:16That's how the playoffs work.
02:18That's how it's always worked.
02:19It seems a little more bizarre today because of the openers
02:22that you get in Major League Baseball.
02:24But it's never gone by the book.
02:26Remember when Pedro Martinez did what he did to us back in the day?
02:30There were no rules.
02:31This is the playoffs.
02:33Everything goes out the window.
02:34So, to act like a manager could just sit here and manage
02:37like it's a regular season game, that's just not the case.
02:40And he did push some of the right buttons.
02:42There are two major criticisms, though, and I think you just referenced them.
02:45Go ahead.
02:45Real quick, I know the Bybee thing blew up in his face,
02:48but how about pinch hitting?
02:50Well, wait a minute.
02:50Did the Bybee thing blow up in his face?
02:52It did not go well.
02:53It did not go well.
02:54But no, no, no.
02:54I think he answered the question about why he didn't start him in game three.
02:58No, I'm talking about Bybee yesterday.
03:00Yeah, I'm talking about the Bybee move yesterday.
03:02But I think even in that moment, it defends vote for not starting him game three.
03:08But I defended him for going to Bybee yesterday.
03:11Well, okay.
03:12But did you defend him for going to...
03:14I thought it was...
03:16We were sitting here...
03:17Espino game three.
03:17Good God.
03:17It took me forever to remember.
03:19We were sitting here analyzing three.
03:21I love what the Derry brothers said.
03:22There were three things that none of them were bulletproof in that game.
03:28None of them were.
03:29Of course.
03:29Okay, Espino was the one guy with the least amount of experience.
03:33But then he righted the ship in that game by going with somebody that actually ended up
03:39putting them in position to win the game and foster for the next, you know, what, four innings?
03:45He was...
03:45Yes.
03:46But again, I do think that in that way, because I think it did prove, and I don't know what
03:53it's going to be like next year.
03:54Like, this is going to be a bigger discussion than I think we're going to let it be.
03:57Like, there has to be a discussion about Tanner Bybee and his headspace right now.
04:03And just how he's...
04:05I don't know if it's the lack of run support.
04:07I don't know what's happened.
04:09I know it's been bad.
04:10It's really bad.
04:11And I think in so many ways, last night proved case in point why he did...
04:18Why Vogt did what he did in game three.
04:21I know that I questioned it.
04:24Couldn't be critical about it because there were so many baseball guys getting in and going,
04:27Nah, Ken, this is kind of what they really should do.
04:31And this is a weird time in baseball with all these pitching changes that are going on.
04:36But I think that it did prove that he was smart to do what he did in game three.
04:40Again, results-based.
04:41Now, should he have gone to Espino yesterday?
04:43I know there was some debate about that.
04:45There was some chatter in maybe the Bybee situation.
04:49Instead of Bybee, are you saying?
04:51Yeah.
04:51Well, no, because I think in that moment, you're doing two things.
04:56I mean, you need other pitchers to go out there and pitch.
04:59Bybee hadn't seen him in the first couple of games.
05:02So you have a fresh perspective out there, too.
05:05I mean, if Bybee would have went out there and shut it down, then things would be better for Bybee.
05:10I think a lot of people would have been thinking better about Bybee.
05:12Yeah, it kind of backfired a little bit.
05:15But you need all hands on deck.
05:16Bybee's a hand.
05:17You need him on deck because I don't think he's injured.
05:20So it's like, well, what do you do when you're a professional baseball player
05:24and you might be going through something right now?
05:26Well, yeah, I guess you're going to have to continue to fight through it.
05:28So off you go.
05:31That is a – this is going to be an off-season conversation about Tanner Bybee
05:35because I don't know what's going on.
05:37I think he must be in his own head.
05:39He's getting touched up.
05:40I don't know what's happening.
05:42But the regular fan can't trust him.
05:44I know I can't.
05:45Can you?
05:45No.
05:46Yeah, but, you know, the level of trust for everybody just goes out the window
05:50so fast in the postseason.
05:52It's so game-to-game, pitch-to-pitch.
05:55Yeah, but this is – I mean, even going in,
05:58like there was a lot of people questioning Tanner Bybee.
06:00Now some of them –
06:01Yeah, we all trusted Cade Smith and, you know, you saw what happened yesterday.
06:04And now we're just trying to figure out if, all right,
06:07it was Gavin Williams went in there, but he would have,
06:09even though it's a higher leverage situation.
06:10Well, yeah, but you weren't going to sit there.
06:11But he was going to have a bullpen session anyway or a simulation.
06:14Yeah, you don't need him to pitch two innings.
06:16You don't want him pitching two innings anyway, though.
06:18For the second night in a row, you don't want that to happen.
06:20So I agree with what Steven Vogt had done there.
06:23There's also – I mean, we've had that criticism,
06:25but there's also the criticism of Angel Martinez still in the lineup.
06:29I know he got a great hit-by-pitch last night.
06:31Yes, he did.
06:31I like a good hit batsman.
06:32Hopefully, that's the start.
06:35But I do want to know, do you guys think that Steven Vogt's doing a good job?
06:382-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
06:39There's nine innings.
06:40There's so many different opportunities to make a decision that people aren't
06:43going to like that's going to backfire.
06:45I think everything in baseball is so results-based in these moments.
06:50Like, there are reasons Steven Vogt does what he does in the month of May
06:55to make sure guys are going to respond in the month of June and July.
06:59There is a long game that's played there.
07:00I can understand that.
07:02But on a game-to-game basis, there's going to be questions.
07:06Well, I think he answered a lot of those questions.
07:09You know, Angel Martinez, there is a power level there.
07:13And if you can get him going, like Joe Adele.
07:15Joe Adele.
07:15Did anybody see Joe Adele doing what he's done over the last few games?
07:18Amazing.
07:19After he started out as dreadful as you can possibly start out.
07:22The criticism, the frustration, the fight that's gone on over Jose Ramirez.
07:28Okay, well, those are a couple of vets.
07:29If you can get Angel Martinez going, well, then you've got more power,
07:33and then you're just waiting for him to break out.
07:37I understand what Steven Vogt's doing with Angel Martinez.
07:39I really do.
07:40It's hard to do it right after he's at-bats, but I understand what he's doing.
07:45Because if there's any spark, it helps protect the guys around him in that order.
07:50Now, maybe you could say, hey, I'd like him bump down a little bit in the order.
07:54Okay, we've talked about that before with Jose.
07:56We talked about that with Anaheim Martinez.
07:59But even when they were down 0-2, I found myself not very critical of Steven Vogt.
08:07Even when they were down 0-2.
08:09I think he's done a good job.
08:10I think that I've been impressed with Will Venable.
08:14You're not paying attention to the White Sox every single game and the decisions that they're making.
08:20So, yeah, when you have Steven Vogt out there, you think you have the advantage.
08:23Venable's done a good job.
08:24He's done a very good job for the White Sox.
08:26But I think Steven Vogt's done a fine job, too.
08:28I think some of the stuff being said about Steven Vogt in real time is frustration.
08:34But I think overall he's done a fine job.
08:362-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
08:38Larry and Illyria, your first up on the fan.
08:41Hey, how's it going, Kenny Anthony?
08:42I'll tell you, man.
08:43Big game guy.
08:44Jose Ramirez, right, Kenny?
08:46First home, 10-season home run?
08:48Yes.
08:48Is that right?
08:48Yes.
08:49Oh, my God.
08:51I think so.
08:51It's just amazing.
08:55I'll tell you what, you guys.
08:56You mentioned Coach Philbo and Coach Vogt.
08:58One thing about both those guys, they're even keel.
09:01That's what I like about them.
09:02You know, at the moment to them.
09:04I mean, you're right.
09:05Some decisions they make might be upset with them.
09:07But I like their approach, so big time.
09:09And I'll tell you what, Chris and Eddie, Mike Chernoff done, too, with the salary.
09:14I mean, what we got to work with.
09:15He's done a hell of a job, man.
09:17Appreciate it.
09:18Go Guardians.
09:18All right, Larry.
09:19Thank you very much for the call.
09:20Well, Jose's had home runs before in the playoffs.
09:22Yeah, I thought so.
09:23But was he talking about ALDS?
09:25Oh, I'm not sure.
09:27I'm not.
09:28No, he had to have hit home runs in ALDS.
09:29But all I know is these last two games, this is the best stretch.
09:32Two-game stretch, are you kidding me?
09:34Of his entire playoff career, just like that, when we were sitting here,
09:37nobody wanted to come after me when I was like, hey,
09:41maybe we should move Jose down.
09:42And I wasn't getting killed.
09:43It wasn't, you know, the fire and brimstone like I thought I was going to get
09:46because everybody had thought he's injured.
09:49He's not in a rhythm.
09:50It just hasn't looked good.
09:52You're talking about Jose?
09:53Yeah, Jose.
09:54He's even trying to beg to get on base when there was that one that came down
09:58by his shoe and didn't hit him.
10:00And he was begging and we're like, that's not Jose.
10:02And just like that, it changed.
10:04I mean, literally overnight, it changed.
10:052-1-6-4-7-4 to below 92.
10:07Do you think that Steven Vogt's doing a good job here?
10:10I do.
10:10I think he's done a fine job in this series,
10:13even considering a lot of the criticism.
10:15I didn't blame him for the lack of production from the lineup.
10:20I mean, at that time in the first two games of the series,
10:23I didn't know that on how Martinez was going to be a giant 0-4 through four games.
10:28I do think that he is pressing.
10:29I do think it is a concern.
10:31I agree with you there.
10:32I don't know really how I – I don't really want to replace him.
10:35I think the options to replace him in a lineup are not very good.
10:40I thought that –
10:41Are you going to go Schneemann?
10:42Yeah, some people were upset about Hedges last night,
10:44but he's basically a personal catcher for your start.
10:49So I don't think that that's going to be an issue.
10:51He got Bailey in there.
10:52Or for Parker Messick, I don't think that that's going to be an issue.
10:54And then Bailey was terrific.
10:56You know, that was pinch hitting.
10:57You want to talk about all the moves that don't work?
10:58How about that move working?
11:00Yes.
11:002-1-6-4-7-4 to below 92.
11:02I want to ask you guys that question.
11:03Do you think that Steven Vogt's done a good job?
11:068 o'clock.
11:06There are folks out there that think that this team –
11:09they'd rather this game five be played in Chicago.
11:12I want to ask if you think that's true.
11:14And Lima's laughing at me already, so I think you know his answer.
11:16And speaking of Lima, he hasn't seen you so upset over an argument
11:21about a backup ever.
11:23Ken Carman, Anthony Lima, live on the fan.
