00:03:57T1 Climax winner, and there he is, Masahiro Chono.
00:04:04Heads out to the ring.
00:04:06I think we're going to get a special message from Mr. August himself,
00:04:11the greatest T1 competitor of all time.
00:04:15The first ever T1 Climax winner in 1991.
00:04:21And went on to win a record five T1s, Masahiro Chono.
00:04:35We haven't seen Chono around these parts for years.
00:04:43Oh, whoa, they're not going to give him a live mic, are they?
00:04:46Oh, no, he's always outspoken.
00:04:48You never know what he's going to say.
00:04:53I can't eat, I can't say that.
00:04:57The third time, G1 Climax.
00:05:07Congratulations to New Japan.
00:05:16The match that's coming up is a very special one indeed.
00:05:23This year, we've faced an awful lot of challenges and troubled times due to the pandemic.
00:05:32With Corona, we are now in New Japan Pro Wrestling with Corona and really leading the way in terms of
00:05:43how to conduct ourselves and events as an entity within the confines of the pandemic.
00:05:55And I'm truly grateful for New Japan Pro Wrestling and everything that's going on in the staging of this tremendous
00:06:03event and tremendous series that's taken place.
00:06:19And now the two survivors will come out.
00:06:24The two men who have lost their ways to the finals and Chono is going to have the best seat
00:06:30right at ringside to take in the G1 Climax Final.
00:06:37Hey, he's wrestling royalty to me.
00:06:40He is just the coolest customer.
00:06:44The first G1 that I called live, I had to make sure I got my picture taken with Chono.
00:06:51That's one memory I'll never forget.
00:06:54Masahiro Chono down there at ringside.
00:06:56Here we go.
00:06:57Here we go.

00:07:31Here we go.
00:07:31Here we go.
00:07:32Here we go.
00:07:35Here we go.
00:07:37Here we go.
00:07:39Climax winner and seeks to be the first man in a long time since Hiroyoshi tenté to win back-to
00:07:47-back
00:07:47and not only do that but Ibushi seeks to become in his words God's capital G become a deity in
00:07:54the
00:07:54process so for Sonata cop's goal on paper his goal is simple attack and dethrone Ibushi but
00:08:03whether it will be that simple it's an awful lot easier said than done for Sonata Sonata rides the
00:08:10hot hand coming in coming in with 12 points and having won six in a row the tournament did not
00:08:20start great for Sonata Rocky we questioned his motivation along the way and now here we are
00:08:27with Sonata as a finalist it's absolutely incredible the the way he was able to bounce back from those
00:08:36early defeats and we've seen him in this this position before this big match main event and he
00:08:51wasn't able to fully fulfill those big shoes but will he do it here tonight where it matters
00:09:00and the finals of the G1 Climax 30
00:09:23and it was 27 years ago that a young Kojo Bushi traveled in the back seat of his car next
00:09:31to his older
00:09:33brother myth bemused because his older brother had rented a pro wrestling VHS tape and he wanted his
00:09:41anime he wanted his cartoons but when he got home and he saw Shinya Hashimoto and the stars of Nijapan
00:09:48Pro Wrestling take on the superstars of WAR Kota Ibushi saw some people that transfixed him people that were
00:09:55more than mere humans and he knew what his path would be then when he came into the wrestling world
00:10:02he saw people that were more than mere professional wrestlers men like Hiroshi Tanahashi men like Shinsuke Nakamura
00:10:10people to him the Kota Ibushi idolized but Ibushi sought to become even more than that
00:10:17he sought to become more than a god he sought to become a capital G the god to surpass it
00:10:24all that's
00:10:25why he created Kamigoya in the first place that's what's driven him for his first G1 victory last year
00:10:31and to make history the third consecutive final in a row for Kojo Ibushi and perhaps
00:10:38second consecutive G1 victory
00:10:41and Rocky we noticed right away the heavy ramp on the on the left leg of Kota Ibushi
00:10:49heavy heavy taping uh on that that leg
00:10:54a hundred and fifty eight kicks thrown between Taichi and Kota Ibushi in that a block uh match where they
00:11:04met
00:11:05and uh just really just a match we've never seen before I mean Kevin you you you said uh you
00:11:11texted
00:11:12Ibushi and what what did he have to say about that match just to remind us uh he said this
00:11:17is the kind
00:11:17of pro wrestling I want to do such an Ibushi answer right yep but you know again he didn't answer
00:11:25the
00:11:26first question I asked him which how was how's your leg uh the match was marvelous and he said this
00:11:32is the
00:11:32kind of pro wrestling that I want to do and then he said I miss you when will I get
00:11:36to see you so the
00:11:37bell sounds and we're underway this is the finals of the G1 Climax 30 tournament Kota Ibushi the winner
00:11:44of the A block versus Sonata the winner of the B block the longest match in tournament history
00:11:52gentlemen two years ago Tanahashi defeated Kota Ibushi 35 minutes even
00:12:02and Chris we talked in the uh pre-game show about match length and how long you anticipate this going
00:12:08the shortest match in the last 10 years uh was 18-23 with Okada beating uh Shinsuke Nakamura
00:12:20back in uh what year was that 14. uh right I know I'm you know I'm kind of expecting something
00:12:28like
00:12:28that I think what we're going to see here is a very pace a very 19th main event uh you're
00:12:34dominated by
00:12:35the the people that inspire both these men and I talk about Shinya Hashimoto and and that's something
00:12:40when I heard your response this is the style of pro wrestling that I want to do and you know
00:12:45Hashimoto
00:12:45very famous for those those kicks and those heavy strikes and that knockout mentality I wonder
00:12:51whether that's something Ibushi has in mind Sonata of course very influenced by Hashimoto's great rival
00:12:58Keiji Muto and they went very hard hitting and very fast and although this is a little bit of
00:13:03tease I think once they do make contact this might be a quick one
00:13:11what's your gut tell you Rocky how's this one going to play out you know my gut tells me that
00:13:17this one is going to go I can't say it's going to go longer than Tanahashi and Ibushi did but
00:13:23I feel
00:13:24like it's going to be closer to that 30 minute mark I think it's going to go right under 30.
00:13:29I feel
00:13:30like uh you know that leg of Ibushi will obviously hinder the time limit he won't be able to go
00:13:36as
00:13:36long as he probably normally could or would and uh I think that these guys are going to really take
00:13:43the time to feel each other out though Ibushi ringing up the left arm you can see by the difference
00:13:51how tight the wrap is on his leg look at his right quad and then look at his left and
00:13:59you
00:13:59could see the size difference and that's because of the compression of that tape really squeezing that
00:14:05in Ibushi going after the left arm Sonata breaking uh conventional wisdom for the second year in a row
00:14:15I think we don't have to reference that anymore Jay White last year lost his first three
00:14:22and made the finals and now Sonata in that same position
00:14:26but there were no proclamations about Sonata and like I said these two are being extremely cautious
00:14:32really feeling each other out here the pace that they're going
00:14:38Rocky do you think you think Ibushi feels pressure with getting to his third final in a row and and
00:14:44wanting to go back to back I mean I think he feels pressure but I I don't think that it's
00:14:50something that
00:14:51phases him I think you know Ibushi's biggest opponent is Ibushi that's what I I think he's always talked
00:14:57about and set up uh you know himself for is like if Ibushi can beat Ibushi he's gonna do it
00:15:04you know what
00:15:05I'm saying it's just Sonata is just the uh you know the metaphor the form of of what it is
00:15:11you know
00:15:11well Ibushi has certainly patterned his style after his opponents throughout this tournament
00:15:16he you know met Tomohiro Ishii in an Ishii match Chris we and and what can we say about the
00:15:25battle
00:15:25that Ibushi had with Minoru Suzuki an absolute throwback to the to the UWF uh style of of of combat
00:15:33and that's exactly you're exactly right and then when you looked at at Taichi he bought the I guess you
00:15:39say he bought the Kawada out of out of Taichi I uh Ibushi that's almost how he challenges himself
00:15:46when we talk about how Okada challenged himself Ibushi when when he says that was the kind of match I
00:15:53want
00:15:53to wrestle it's almost like you could write a novel analyzing that comment but Ibushi wants to broaden
00:15:59what professional wrestling is he wants to get as many people invested in this this great business as as
00:16:04possible and he does that by adapting as you said to his opponent styles and showing every single match
00:16:10a different side of Kota Ibushi so Sonata has Ibushi along the ropes Renchu Zuno will call for a clean
00:16:17break we do anticipate a clean break and as we've highlighted uh almost a collective sigh of relief
00:16:23I would say between the three of us and I'm sure with the fans realizing that they will see a
00:16:27clean
00:16:28mostly scientific match here between these two it's going to be a high flying aggressive they'll do
00:16:32whatever it takes to win we don't have to worry about outside interference but I do want to ask
00:16:36you this Rocky does Sonata feel almost like in a no pressure situation after defeating uh evil the
00:16:44other night he's almost playing with house money at this point do you think there's that sense of
00:16:49relief I made the finals and that's okay you know I hope he doesn't feel that way because I don't
00:16:55think
00:16:56that that's the right motivation going against an opponent as dangerous as Kota Ibushi a guy who's
00:17:01already been here before he's been here twice before two years in a row now three years in a row
00:17:08and he's you know he's got to feel comfortable being in this spot now winning is a whole nother game
00:17:13on top of that it's just like uh winning the championship and then defending the championship
00:17:19so I feel like here uh Sonata's got to be uber motivated and not take Kota Ibushi lightly
00:17:27and I think that uh Chris and maybe you could speak to this uh Sonata always such a cool customer
00:17:33but
00:17:33uh do you think that like this is his time to finally break out of that you know mold of
00:17:40boy he could be
00:17:41great if and the next breakout star could be Sonata is this his time it has to be if it's
00:17:47not now then
00:17:48win you know I think you're being Okada's rival through 2019 and having that that that label put
00:17:55upon him a backhanded compliment to Sonata but he took it all in his stride and then he was led
00:18:01up to
00:18:02Zack Sabre Jr in the Tokyo Dome this year and he and he lost that match and took it in
00:18:05his stride and
00:18:07evil but you know he fired up in his own way and defected and went to bullet club but Sonata
00:18:13is in real
00:18:13danger of being left behind if he doesn't do something big he needs to beat Ibushi he really
00:18:19needs this one Ibushi really wants it but I thought it truly needs it well a much different match than
00:18:24what we saw with Ibushi and Taichi in the block final the other night where Ibushi and Taichi simply
00:18:33kicked each other in the legs until they finally Ibushi landed the Kamigoya got the win it's been all
00:18:39control of the arm and overhand strikes being fired into each other's chest I almost wonder if Ibushi's
00:18:47game plan was to attack that left arm of Sonata he likes to to set up and he likes to
00:18:53use that left
00:18:54side to apply pressure for the uh the skull end and they train and let's see oh and got caught
00:19:06very unexpected for Ibushi to get caught like that he's got a really good chin but that might be
00:19:14the difference of all these battles these striking battles that he's been in all throughout the tournament
00:19:24yeah Sonata has certainly been has faced different styles of opponents uh than Ibushi had to in the
00:19:32a block but Ibushi finishing at 14 points same point total as last year and looking to go back to
00:19:41back
00:19:41last man to do it Hiroyoshi Tenzan you know three and oh four and Chris before that the only other
00:19:48man
00:19:48to do it sitting at ringside that's right really firing in on Ibushi and one thing we haven't quite
00:20:02seen you you've seen flashes of that that murder Ibushi right that that real dark side um you know
00:20:08Ibushi going into this year has talked about how he's been more able to control that side of him and
00:20:13turn it on and off as he pleases um and I wonder whether Sonata is going to force Ibushi really
00:20:19into that that killer mode from from the golden star tonight Rocky read the body language of Ibushi right
00:20:25now I think you're really tapping into something I think that this tournament has taken its toll yes
00:20:31he's just put Sonata down with a massive kick but he's he's registering a lot more than we've seen
00:20:38the strikes from Sonata uh are doing more damage more effective than perhaps I thought they would be
00:20:44yeah no I think it's the wear and tear uh you know and obviously these guys are having the extra
00:20:50uh
00:20:51you know the extra match here uh in Ryo Goku uh doesn't help you know that that singles competition
00:20:57that high level competition and um I just feel like Ibushi has got to be broken down and he really
00:21:06fought
00:21:06his opponents uh battle his opponents style of matches each and every night and really threw down
00:21:14with some heavy hitting opponents uh Tomohiro Ishii Minoru Suzuki Shingo I mean these guys are bruisers
00:21:22and they and and he's got to be feeling the effects and the first time that Sonata goes after that
00:21:28leg
00:21:33and I almost wondered where they would and and when you think to the last time these two guys met
00:21:39in the
00:21:40the 29th one climax uh you know Ibushi had a prominent target in his in his ankle which he ended
00:21:47in the
00:21:47opener um but that match don't really at the end of the day came more about uh both competitors'
00:21:53his respective neck than it did the back goal oh Sonata went for that drop kick
00:22:01he caught Ibushi on the way down yeah and just as just as you said the word neck
00:22:07Chris that was when Sonata missed the drop kick and caught Ibushi did he catch him on the top of
00:22:17the
00:22:17head yeah he might have compressed his neck and it almost felt like he was a little bit
00:22:22but Ibushi wasn't really sure what what happened there but that look on his face maybe got his
00:22:27bell rang a little bit yep let me tell you something you know something like that could really really
00:22:34put a hurting on you pins and needles right down your arms compression of the neck in such a strange
00:22:40way like that guys I took a a poll earlier on twitter I asked who do you got Sonata or
00:22:51Ibushi and I was
00:22:52I was very surprised by uh the results Sonata with 65 percent and Ibushi with 35 percent
00:23:02I would have thought the poll would have been the opposite I would have thought
00:23:05Ibushi 65 Sonata 35 interesting
00:23:10so Sonata now maneuvering towards the ropes
00:23:17Ibushi keeps them free from that left leg and
00:23:23God with Chono sitting at ringside might be thinking to apply an STF and
00:23:30looking for it Chris that's that's very unlike Ibushi to kind of have a look to the ringside area and
00:23:38who's there and send a message that's that's not really the the coach Ibushi I don't think any of us
00:23:44really know right now applying that STF and I got a feeling our handheld camera might get a shot of
00:23:50us here at Chono who's down here at ringside as Sonata gets the ropes but again Ibushi has patterned his
00:23:56style of methodology in his matches in this tournament depending on his opponent and even this is the first
00:24:01time that there has been an outside perspective that Ibushi could perhaps play to a little bit
00:24:07so I think Ibushi got his bell rung by by what happened earlier and he just saw Chono and just
00:24:15went for whatever was there and you know I don't I don't
00:24:18got rattled he got rattled yeah again that missed drop kick and as Sonata sword over the top of Ibushi
00:24:28catching him with his hand or his forearm as Ibushi went underneath and Ibushi has not been right ever since
00:24:38Sonata was frustrated once once more from Ibushi
00:24:46and Sonata able to put him down
00:24:51so what began as just mere speculation on our part about whether or not Ibushi was 100% coming into
00:24:58this batch
00:24:59now avoiding a drop kick has put Ibushi in trouble and I'm sure he's trying to collect himself
00:25:08and Sonata not making it easy on him
00:25:19and Rocky you know this firsthand when you get your bell rung that means another strike could put
00:25:27you down that much easier right that's where the glass jaw terminology comes from
00:25:32no and absolutely and we saw uh Ibushi get hit with one of those elbows really early on and we
00:25:38saw him drop
00:25:38which is very very not like Ibushi then uh that that situation where he figure four
00:25:48I went for that drop kick and landed on Ibushi's net neck and head uh you know that that could
00:25:53really
00:25:54become uh a storyline in this match right here
00:25:59figure four of course a favorite hold of Keiji Muto Sonata a devotee of Muto's originally
00:26:08tried to to join the new japan dojo back in 2005 was part of the public tryout that only Tetsuya
00:26:14Naito
00:26:14passed instead Sonata took a separate path went into all japan pro wrestling and became you know studied hard under
00:26:22the the the mentorship of Keiji Muto followed him to wrestle one and then decided to to branch out on
00:26:29his own and wrestle internationally and that's all history that Kotobushi has has talked about in the
00:26:34past and he's often said that Sonata isn't really right in his place in Los Ingobernables de Apon
00:26:40and Kotobushi wants to to wrestle against Seiya Sonata the man behind this this cold skull um visage and persona
00:26:57and his protege is on the right path
00:27:06wow almost slow motion there as Sonata scores with the uppercut
00:27:14Sonata did with one more than Ibushi could do with three
00:27:19yeah
00:27:21yeah
00:27:21yeah
00:27:21yeah
00:27:21Sonata charging
00:27:22oh great great roll up two
00:27:26yeah got that sunset flip went for that kick but landed the moonsault
00:27:31cover two and a kick out
00:27:38so if the over under is 35 minutes i would say that Ibushi
00:27:44and the situation that he's dealing with
00:27:46we're probably looking more towards the under
00:27:52it's quite interesting that Sonata really hasn't opened up the offense on that on that leg
00:27:58i wonder if Sonata is trying to beat Ibushi straight on
00:28:03so there could be it's interesting is Sonata trying to beat Ibushi in an Ibushi style match
00:28:08both guys want to beat each other with the other's style as Ibushi takes Sonata over
00:28:15Sonata rolling out to the floor now Sonata collecting himself and Ibushi does he go for broke here
00:28:21he's been very measured in his risks in this tournament
00:28:25but he lands heavy down on top of Sonata out on the floor
00:28:29yeah you usually see Ibushi really able to fly on that and uh you can see that his uh with
00:28:36the
00:28:36the way his leg is and that injury he's really really uh hindered
00:28:50so he did spend some time in the figure four but
00:28:56Ibushi feeling the aftermath of the
00:29:01the kick war that he had with Tai Chi the other night the extra day of rest that Ibushi had
00:29:06instead
00:29:07of Sonata could only imagine what would have happened would Ibushi been able to answer the bell tonight
00:29:14if his match was yesterday let's see the spring yes springboard missile drop kick
00:29:21leg hook red shoes two and Sonata kicks out
00:29:28Ibushi taught uh you know a great length when he was dealing with that ankle injury last year how that
00:29:33forced him to change his style get away from high flying um take on a more uh strike based approach
00:29:40here but Kota Ibushi is certainly choosing to fly around more and now choosing to land those mid kick
00:29:47yeah but every time he takes a step when he plants you can see that he just doesn't have that
00:29:53same
00:29:53speed that he usually does when he delivers those mid kicks and now Sonata who is
00:30:00able-bodied and a pair of leaf frogs a drop kick into the chest and now Sonata will fly over
00:30:07the top
00:30:10the back of Ibushi's head hitting the barricade as well after Sonata landed on top of him
00:30:16the beautiful G1 climax trophy at ringside goes to the winner
00:30:24and look at that just the difference it's almost like who wore it better between
00:30:28the two punches of Ibushi and Sonata Ibushi got some of that hop some of that impact but then after
00:30:35that
00:30:36wincing in pain clutching that leg Sonata an awful lot of height an awful lot of impact and firing up
00:30:42the crowd to boot
00:30:44he will roll Ibushi underneath then go for a cover here cover two and a kick out please Rocky
00:30:51it feels like there's something in the air with Sonata tonight I just I can't put my my finger on
00:30:58it
00:30:59exactly maybe it was the pole that I'm starting to feel influenced by but I feel like it might be
00:31:06Sonata's night I'm just starting to to feel that a bit shoving Sonata away Sonata trying that TKO and
00:31:13now Sonata goes to the second rope moonsault over the top
00:31:20and Ibushi looked like Sonata tried to go low
00:31:24and now catch power slam Ibushi goes top rope whoa
00:31:35he was way out
00:31:39way out of there really far and that knee
00:31:44and now could pay for it in big style Sonata close into the finish no
00:31:53yep right there
00:32:02Ibushi's in trouble he is in absolute trouble here
00:32:06Sonata knows he's in trouble taking that time crying out the crowd telling them yeah I know it
00:32:11I know it and I gotta do more damage right here
00:32:17locks up and over the top Ibushi comes forward catches it with the boot
00:32:24and now Ibushi firing up the crowd
00:32:27I don't know whether this is smart
00:32:30yeah I think I know what he's going for it's been a while since we've seen it
00:32:40but with the way that leg is it's a big risk
00:32:45Sonata getting away
00:32:46oh
00:32:47oh
00:32:50Sonata measured him tried to drop kick the leg
00:32:54and Ibushi elevates drives the double stomp right through the midsection
00:33:01yeah Sonata created too much space
00:33:04which telegraphed it and Ibushi was able to change his direction
00:33:10and come down with that beautiful double stomp
00:33:14could have spelled disaster for Ibushi
00:33:17if Sonata would have landed that drop kick
00:33:20oh wait wait wait
00:33:29magic spear off the apron
00:33:38and Ibushi I wonder if we'll get another look on a replay
00:33:44did Ibushi take that one on the back of his head
00:33:50right down west
00:33:52it's another
00:34:00and both men are down
00:35:46Those 2 vulnerable areas, the head and the knee
00:35:52And Sonata got both
00:35:57And Sonata looks just so confident right now
00:36:02He will go for the TKO, I don't think Ibushi's gonna have any counter answer
00:36:07Maybe he will, he's trying
00:36:08No, it's dead, flipping him over for the first effort for Skull-End
00:36:2425 minutes been already, I'm amazed
00:36:28Sonia, just how fast, 25 minutes
00:36:31Yeah, I couldn't believe it
00:36:33It doesn't even feel that way
00:36:35Oh, catches him
00:36:38Oh, but he cannot hang on
00:36:42All he could do
00:36:47He might have got some of that brunt with that drop kick
00:36:51Let's take another look at it
00:36:55Oh, I think that impact when he sat out just charred that hamstring
00:36:59Or as his head snapped forward
00:37:02Exactly true, it's a concussive effect
00:37:05A whiplash almost
00:37:06Yeah, whiplash is the word I was thinking of, yes
00:37:15What a great counter though
00:37:24Now summoning Sonata to his feet
00:37:32There's the combo
00:37:33Not with as much speed as we usually see it though
00:37:39So that powerbomb nearly lost him on the way down
00:37:43Man, Ibushi is really struggling with that leg
00:37:52Affecting his offense on all levels
00:37:58And now just get it over with
00:38:01Win the match
00:38:04Tamagoyetan
00:38:10Wanting to be
00:38:11Capital G, God
00:38:16And Sonata comes up from underneath with the drop kick to the leg
00:38:19But Ibushi puts it down with a lariat
00:38:42Wait
00:38:43Here we go, Tiger Suplex
00:38:47Uh oh
00:38:48Oh, jump
00:38:50Ibushi barely out
00:38:59Loops him up
00:39:00Looking for the TKO
00:39:03Gets him
00:39:04Boy, Ibushi
00:39:05Doesn't get it clean
00:39:06Wait a minute
00:39:08He almost stole it, Ibushi was able to take some of that impact on the knees
00:39:12I think and come up now with the dragon sleeper
00:39:15Whoa
00:39:16Come on
00:39:17Yeah, it seemed like Ibushi wrapped his arm around Sonata's neck on the way down
00:39:21But Sonata quickly repositions it down
00:39:23Oh
00:39:24Oh
00:39:26Yeah
00:39:27Gonna lay back
00:39:28Get the hooks in
00:39:29The lights
00:39:30Yeah, the lights are about to go out for Ibushi
00:39:34Ibushi's limp
00:39:36Talking about wanting to become a capital G, God
00:39:39Now Sonata's reminding him it's only mortal
00:39:43Yeah
00:39:44Oh
00:39:44Yeah
00:39:45Oh
00:39:47Sonata with skull end
00:39:50And will this be the end for Kota Ibushi in his hope to go back to back
00:39:54Got his head out, Sonata going to look to reposition
00:41:16I can only imagine the sound the audience would be making
00:41:20Were they allowed to voice their emotions
00:41:24But it's all being expressed with their hands
00:41:28And at the 30 minute mark
00:41:34Ooh, goes high
00:41:35High kick lands
00:41:38Look at the distance
00:41:40A man he once deified
00:41:43Bomaye
00:41:45Got him
00:41:47Bomaye, two
00:41:50And Sonata kicks out
00:42:00Now another attempt
00:42:02Kabagoye, Sonata
00:42:05Answered
00:42:06That pop-up, TKO
00:42:10Cover, red shoes slightly out of position, two
00:42:12And Ibushi kicks out
00:42:14That was the key to beating Kazuchika Okada when Sonata did
00:42:19And now he will go up top and look for that moonsault
00:42:22Couldn't see it coming
00:42:24Ibushi flat on his face
00:42:26Sonata landing
00:42:27The moonsault
00:42:28He's gonna go up again
00:42:29He's gonna go up again
00:42:31Sonata
00:42:31Sonata
00:42:32Oh
00:42:35Sacrificed that leg
00:42:37To keep himself with a chance
00:42:51Ibushi had two choices
00:42:53Absorb the moonsault
00:42:55Lose the G1
00:42:56Or sacrifice what was left in that leg
00:43:00Deny Sonata
00:43:02But injure himself further in the process
00:43:06I can feel all those tremors from my room backstage in your Goku
00:43:11I don't know whether that's just me shaking in excitement here
00:43:25Sonata
00:43:25Sonata now
00:43:26Goes over the top
00:43:27Wait, wait, wait
00:43:28Ibushi trying to reposition
00:43:31Oh, he's trying to climb
00:43:32He's trying to climb
00:43:33He's trying to climb
00:43:34Reversal
00:43:37You don't think this was the key to Ibushi beating Sonata one year ago in the G1?
00:43:41Oh, he's trying to climb
00:43:41If he could want on him
00:43:43Couldn't do it
00:43:48Hooks in though
00:43:49Ah
00:43:50Ah
00:43:52Yah
00:43:52Bushi holding on
00:43:54And now lifting Sonata up
00:43:57Uh-oh
00:43:58Oh, he's thinking
00:43:59Legs are trapped
00:44:01Hito Tenashi the bastard driver
00:44:05Oh
00:44:06Oh
00:44:07Keep him right there
00:44:09And with the G1
00:44:10No
00:44:10Oh, Sonata kicks out
00:44:26Can Kota Ibushi come all the way back?
00:44:30Stealing with the injured leg
00:44:33Getting dinged all the way through
00:44:36Earlier in this match
00:44:38Ah
00:44:41Can he be
00:44:42Can he become
00:44:43Deity?
00:44:44Can he become God?
00:44:47Kamigoye
00:44:48No
00:44:48Look at this
00:44:50Look at this
00:44:50Back slide two
00:44:51No
00:44:53He holds on though
00:44:55Sonata
00:44:56Crosses his arms
00:44:58Trying to block
00:44:59The Kamigoye
00:45:00Oh
00:45:02Oh
00:45:02Oh
00:45:03Another roll up
00:45:04Another roll
00:45:04He's got him
00:45:05Go
00:45:07Go
00:45:08Go
00:45:11One
00:45:12Two
00:45:13Go
00:45:14Go
00:45:15Go
00:45:16Go
00:45:16Go
00:45:17Go
00:45:17Go
00:45:18Go
00:45:19Go
00:45:21Go
00:45:22Go
00:45:22Go
00:45:22C'est le plus grand fou que j'ai jamais vu !
00:45:27Red shoes définitively telling everybody
00:45:30que c'était deux et seulement deux !
00:45:37Sonata est en position !
00:45:40Skolland est en !
00:45:49Oh, scoops him up with the last bit of energy that he has !
00:45:52High kick lands !
00:45:58Here we go !
00:46:00Kamagoi !
00:46:04Kamagoi !
00:46:04Yeah !
00:46:06Oh !
00:46:13There's no-one who's ever picked out of Kamagoi !
00:46:17But Sonata just did !
00:46:25Oh !
00:46:27Oh !
00:46:29Kamagoi !
00:46:32One !
00:46:33Two !
00:46:34Back-to-back has done it again !
00:46:38Kota Ibushi !
00:46:41G1 Climax winner !
00:46:46He's talked all month long about becoming God !
00:46:50Gentlemen !
00:46:51I think I've just had a religious experience !
00:46:54Kota Ibushi has won his second consecutive G1 Climax !
00:47:08With the downhillalabance !
00:47:29Rocky, it was a matter of survival for Ibushi throughout this bout !
00:47:43Je me suis allé à dire Ibushi.
00:47:47Just wow.
00:47:48What a wild ride that was.
00:47:51The knee and the leg really, really giving Ibushi so much trouble.
00:48:07What a crazy, crazy match that was.
00:48:14And it could just come down to the fact
00:48:17that Kota Ibushi was destined to win this tournament.
00:48:20That throughout, all the way through,
00:48:23no matter what his opponents threw at him,
00:48:25Kota Ibushi found a way to either win or respond.
00:48:30and has gone the distance again, winning back-to-back.
00:48:35Already making history, what's his third final in a row.
00:48:38And now equally, both Tenzan and the man at ringside,
00:48:44Masahiro Chono, Kota Ibushi etches his name.
00:48:48back-to-back G1 Climax winner.
00:48:58Sonata's day in the sun will come, though.
00:49:01He's got the taste of G1 Climax finals,
00:49:05and I've got a feeling he'll be back.
00:49:11His previous horizon had only been eight points,
00:49:15but surpassing that to 12 this year, making the finals.
00:49:22But now a man, Chris, who, chasing God,
00:49:26perhaps he has surpassed God.
00:49:29Perhaps he surpassed the more appropriate name
00:49:34of that finishing manoeuvre, Kamigoya to surpass God.
00:49:39It was something he used to defeat Tanahashi.
00:49:42That's what drove him through his return G1 in 2017.
00:49:48Questions over his resolve the next year
00:49:52when he made the final.
00:49:53He proved his resolve last year
00:49:56when he won the G1,
00:49:58and now he's proved that
00:50:02he truly is the greatest
00:50:06competitor.
00:50:07Kota Ibushi
00:50:09talks about beat the one.
00:50:11Kota Ibushi is the one.
00:50:13Lump over the left eye and all.
00:50:20He said,
00:50:22this is the professional wrestling
00:50:24that I want to do.
00:50:26He wants to spread the message
00:50:28of his style of pro wrestling
00:50:30to the entire world.
00:50:33And Kota Ibushi has shown
00:50:35here in this match
00:50:37that you can face difficulties,
00:50:40that you can come in weakened
00:50:42and wounded.
00:50:43But if you have enough heart
00:50:45and determination,
00:50:46belief in yourself,
00:50:48you can't win.
00:50:52Masahiro Chono
00:50:54presenting the trophy
00:50:58to Kota Ibushi.
00:51:25last year,
00:51:26Kota Ibushi,
00:51:27after his match,
00:51:28he said,
00:51:28all of us,
00:51:29all together,
00:51:30from the wrestlers
00:51:32to the staff
00:51:32to the fans,
00:51:34let's
00:51:36broaden
00:51:38the perspective,
00:51:39broaden the borders,
00:51:41broaden what professional wrestling is.
00:51:43and this year,
00:51:46we're perhaps more confined
00:51:48than we'd ever expect
00:51:49to be in our personal lives.
00:51:51We've all been through challenges.
00:51:52We've been cooped up inside,
00:51:55some of us,
00:51:57for what's felt like an eternity.
00:51:59But Kota Ibushi
00:52:00has been able to present
00:52:03his breed of professional wrestling
00:52:04over the last 19 events
00:52:10and truly has achieved
00:52:11what he set out to do
00:52:12last year.
00:52:13The question is,
00:52:15what's next?
00:52:16And I think we're about to find out.
00:52:34A flagpole had to be
00:52:36replaced or bad
00:52:38when Hiroshi Tana
00:52:39she won the tournament
00:52:40in 2015.
00:52:46And it's the
00:52:48Rocky,
00:52:49historically,
00:52:50of course,
00:52:50you know,
00:52:50the G in G1
00:52:52grade one
00:52:53and
00:52:55having a grade one
00:52:56athlete
00:52:57be the one
00:52:58at the end of it all
00:52:59here in the 30th tournament,
00:53:01I think is perfectly
00:53:02emblematic
00:53:03of what this tournament
00:53:03has represented.
00:53:04Oh, absolutely.
00:53:06and to
00:53:07not only is Ibushi
00:53:09a grade one
00:53:09and the grade one
00:53:11athlete
00:53:11of this tournament
00:53:13this year
00:53:13in this 30th edition
00:53:15of the G1
00:53:17climax,
00:53:17but I feel that
00:53:19Sonata
00:53:20has really proven
00:53:21and shown
00:53:22that what a great
00:53:23grade one
00:53:24athlete
00:53:25he is.
00:53:27there you see it
00:53:28the ribbon
00:53:29saying that
00:53:30Kodurubushi
00:53:31has won
00:53:32and in today's
00:53:33date there
00:53:35the ribbon's hanging
00:53:36off the pack
00:53:37Kodurubushi
00:53:38now has the mic
00:53:39and I think it's
00:53:49time
00:53:50and I think it's
00:53:51and I think it's
00:53:51Thank you so much.
00:53:52For real, thank you.
00:56:59de Wrestle Kingdom.
00:57:00Le premier événement de 2021.
00:57:04Ibushi va chercher à commencer
00:57:06ce nouveau année
00:57:07sur une note très brillante,
00:57:09une note de l'un autre,
00:57:11peut-être.
00:57:21Nous avons déjà dit,
00:57:22c'était un G1 comme aucun autre.
00:57:25En l'ombre,
00:57:26en l'ombre,
00:57:28attendants down
00:57:29parce que les restrictions de COVID,
00:57:32audible cheering
00:57:33held at bay,
00:57:37mais l'action
00:57:38inside the ring,
00:57:40bell-to-bell, Rocky,
00:57:41I would put this tournament
00:57:42up against any other
00:57:44from the strategy standpoint,
00:57:47the game plan standpoint,
00:57:48the execution standpoint.
00:57:50What about the rise
00:57:52of Seya Sonata?
00:57:54Hey!
00:57:54That's really a fantastic story of this
00:57:57and how much,
00:57:58you know,
00:57:59worldwide,
00:58:01the support for him
00:58:02going into this G1 final
00:58:04and him showing up
00:58:06and showing the best Sonata
00:58:07that we've seen to date.
00:58:09But that man right there,
00:58:11the golden star,
00:58:12is like no other human
00:58:14on this earth.
00:58:15He truly is just
00:58:17something different.
00:58:19and I am so excited
00:58:21for my friend Koto Ibushi
00:58:22to be holding that trophy
00:58:25for a second time,
00:58:26back-to-back,
00:58:28unbelievable.
00:58:29Congratulations to the golden star.
00:58:31He is the truest of friends.
00:58:34When he says
00:58:35he will not leave you,
00:58:37he will not stab you in the back,
00:58:38he will not betray you.
00:58:40Chris,
00:58:41that's a guy
00:58:42that is that friend
00:58:45that we all look for
00:58:46and he fights
00:58:47for all of us
00:58:48in the ring.
00:58:49And you saw that,
00:58:51you know,
00:58:52when he was tested
00:58:53by Taichi
00:58:54and during the summer
00:58:56and will you trade in
00:58:58your relationship
00:58:59with Hiroshi Tanahashi
00:59:00and Koto Ibushi
00:59:02said that word
00:59:02to Taichi,
00:59:03I've already
00:59:03made up my mind
00:59:05long before
00:59:06any of this
00:59:07even began.
00:59:09Ibushi
00:59:10is a dedicated
00:59:11human being
00:59:12when he says
00:59:12he sets out
00:59:13to do something
00:59:14he will absolutely
00:59:15better believe
00:59:16achieve that goal.
00:59:19And that's
00:59:20what's almost terrifying
00:59:21when Koto Ibushi
00:59:22says he wants
00:59:23to become God.
00:59:24He's kind of,
00:59:25he's fixing to do it.
00:59:28So Ibushi
00:59:29will
00:59:31take the walk
00:59:32back towards
00:59:33the locker room area.
00:59:34I hope we get
00:59:35to hear
00:59:36from Ibushi some more.
00:59:38I'm sure that
00:59:39the press is gathered
00:59:40and Ibushi
00:59:41will have to cross
00:59:43through the media area
00:59:44Rock before heading
00:59:45back to the locker room.
00:59:47But I mean,
00:59:48again,
00:59:49this tournament,
00:59:50I think again,
00:59:52what we were able
00:59:53to present to the fans
00:59:54here on New Japan World,
00:59:55Rocky,
00:59:56I'm so happy
00:59:56that you and I
00:59:57were able to take
00:59:58this journey together
00:59:59on a day-in,
01:00:00day-out basis
01:00:00and then have Chris
01:00:01join us for the final
01:00:03three nights live.
01:00:04It really made this
01:00:05tournament extremely special.
01:00:07You know,
01:00:08every year we look
01:00:09forward to this tournament
01:00:10and, you know,
01:00:12as fans,
01:00:13like true fans
01:00:14of professional wrestling
01:00:15and New Japan Pro Wrestling,
01:00:17this 30 days or so
01:00:20is always the highlight
01:00:21of our year.
01:00:22It really feels that way.
01:00:23I can, you know,
01:00:25not worry about wrestling.
01:00:26I can, you know,
01:00:27take my boots off
01:00:28and just really do what,
01:00:31re-fall in love
01:00:31with what I fell in love
01:00:33with in professional wrestling
01:00:34and New Japan Pro Wrestling
01:00:35and I'm just so lucky
01:00:37to be able to share
01:00:38that experience
01:00:38with you, Kevin,
01:00:40and with you, Chris,
01:00:41and all the fans
01:00:42that watch worldwide
01:00:43and the support
01:00:44of New Japan Pro Wrestling
01:00:45here on
01:00:46NJPWworld.com.
01:00:47And Chris,
01:00:48you know from being in,
01:00:49you know,
01:00:50in the offices
01:00:51on a day-in,
01:00:52day-out basis,
01:00:52you know exactly
01:00:53how difficult
01:00:55it has been
01:00:56for the staff
01:00:57to be able
01:00:58to present these events
01:00:59and for the world team
01:01:00to be able to take
01:01:01what Rocky and I send them
01:01:02and to put it up
01:01:03onto the site
01:01:04as rapidly as they did.
01:01:05Maybe speak to that
01:01:06a little bit.
01:01:06I mean,
01:01:07it really has,
01:01:08I think,
01:01:08everybody on our coverage end
01:01:10and the people,
01:01:11the road team,
01:01:13you know,
01:01:13the merchandising team
01:01:14and, you know,
01:01:16I think this has been,
01:01:17obviously this year
01:01:18has been the true test
01:01:19of all of us,
01:01:20you know,
01:01:20going through the entire world
01:01:21and everybody watching
01:01:22at home as well
01:01:23and it's,
01:01:25you know,
01:01:25I almost,
01:01:25I had this feeling
01:01:26from the outset
01:01:27that this situation
01:01:28would bring out
01:01:29in a way
01:01:30the best
01:01:31of what we can do
01:01:32and I was sure
01:01:34from the outset
01:01:35that we would be proud
01:01:36of, you know,
01:01:38what we were able
01:01:39to put out
01:01:39within these circumstances
01:01:41and there's no doubt
01:01:42that everybody
01:01:43has worked tremendously hard
01:01:45from the guys in the ring
01:01:46to just everybody
01:01:47in the back
01:01:48to, you know,
01:01:49the people
01:01:49filling out tickets
01:01:50and just everything.
01:01:52We've all come together
01:01:53so, so well.
01:01:54And now
01:01:55the victorious
01:01:57Kota Ibushi
01:02:00will...
01:02:01Oh,
01:02:02what a journey
01:02:03it's been.
01:02:07Ibushi's not normally
01:02:08a drinker.
01:02:09I don't know
01:02:09whether he'll pop
01:02:09the Zimers or not.
01:02:12He's dangerous
01:02:13if he does.
01:02:17to win the G1
01:02:18Thank you.
01:02:18Thank you.
01:02:19I'm being congratulated.
01:02:20I'm being congratulated.
01:02:20I'm being congratulated.
01:02:22And just once again,
01:02:23how does it feel
01:02:24to win the G1
01:02:25for the second one?
01:02:29I'm being congratulated.
01:02:33pushing it until I'm
01:02:34in the place.
01:02:35I won't run away.
01:02:37I won't lose.
01:02:38I won't give up.
01:02:39I will just keep on
01:02:40pushing until the
01:02:41very bitter end.
01:02:49I won't give up.
01:02:53I'm incredibly happy.
01:02:56My body is
01:02:58absolutely messed up
01:03:00at the moment.
01:03:07Well,
01:03:09applause,
01:03:10friends.
01:03:10Come on backstage.

01:03:40C'est un gagnant.
01:03:42C'est un gagnant.
01:03:44Tu n'as pas un gagnant pour moi?
01:03:45Oh, c'est ça.
01:03:52Ok.
01:05:27Je me suis allé.
01:06:01descriptions, l'arrêtement segr a 3 5hr.
01:06:03Le 35 minutes, 12.
01:06:0535 minutes, 12 the time of the match.
01:06:06The longest for 12 seconds from Sanada.
01:06:10And his feelings of Sanada.
01:06:16And last year I said...
01:07:37Comme non, j'ai gagné le titre à me.
01:08:56Il y a eu.
01:08:57Il y a eu.
01:09:00Il y a eu.
01:09:01Il y a eu.
01:09:02Il y a eu.
01:09:05Il y a eu.
01:09:09Il y a eu.
01:09:14Il y a eu.
01:09:58Et maintenant,
01:10:58So, that, of course, the wrap-up of the post-match comments from the G1 Climax winner.
01:11:04But, Rocky, we have to mention, of course, the intrusion by Switchblade Jay White issuing a challenge.
01:11:09I got to say, as a fan and as an analyst, it makes me extremely nervous that Jay White is
01:11:18lurking and waiting and looking for that title opportunity, especially this close to Wrestle Kingdom.
01:11:24Really, you know, we talked about this year being even shorter than usual with the situation with COVID and everything,
01:11:33and maybe only there being one or two opportunities, you know, for somebody to make a challenge.
01:11:39Now, if it's Jay White, and with the history of Jay White and Ibushi and Jay beating Ibushi just within
01:11:47this year on the two of the biggest events of the year, I feel it worries me.
01:11:53Because I don't want to see Jay White, obviously, going for the double gold at Wrestle Kingdom.
01:12:01And it's just an extremely scary thought.
01:12:03Yeah, I had a shiver go up my spine when I heard him utter those words because I hadn't even
01:12:08thought about that possibility.
01:12:10That, yeah, Switchblade Jay White did beat Kota Ibushi during the tournament.
01:12:13And if Ibushi wins, does that mean Jay would be a challenger for the briefcase?
01:12:19And that, indeed, is what it is.
01:12:20But Ibushi says any time.
01:12:23I do want to give you a couple of quick steps.
01:12:25And, my God, in 2020 of all places and times, this would be the year that it could, you know,
01:12:30the unheard of has happened, and somebody actually beat somebody for the briefcase.
01:12:35Absolutely could happen.
01:12:36But I do want to say thanks to Chris Samsa, at the Chris Samsa on Twitter, sportofprowrestling.com.
01:12:42His stats have been such an integral part of what we've done.
01:12:45Just to look at this, guys, and it talks about the parity of both blocks.
01:12:49Average match length of the A block, 15 minutes and 45 seconds.
01:12:54Average match length of the B block, 15 minutes and 42 seconds.
01:12:58That's exactly how even the competition was in both blocks.
01:13:03And, Chris, Rocky, I get almost teary-eyed at this point because I know our journey of the G1 is
01:13:09over, but that doesn't mean that we're done.
01:13:11We'll be back together, and we'll be continuing on broadcasting, whether live or tape-delayed.
01:13:16The English commentary team here to stay, and we're going to continue to present New Japan Pro Wrestling.
01:13:21Chris, I want to say thank you to you.
01:13:23Rocky, I love you.
01:13:24Thank you, too.
01:13:25Thank you, guys.
01:13:26Appreciate you all.
01:13:28All right.
01:13:29So, that's going to put a wrap here on the action here from Ryogoku.
01:13:33We hope you enjoyed the G1 Climax Tournament.
01:13:36And, of course, the press conference will be in a day or so, and we'll find out what happens next,
01:13:42what happens at Power Struggle.
01:13:43And we want to thank you for joining us for G1 Climax 30.
01:13:47For Chris Charlton and Rocky Romero, I'm Kevin Kelly.
01:13:50Thanks also to the staff.
