00:05West Indies batting coach Floyd Riefer says the men in Maroon can take a few positives away from Sunday's first
00:11ODI, despite the defeat.
00:13He says now it's about consistency.
00:16We had a lot of positives. Obviously the start that we had in terms of the 85 grand partnership in
00:22the first 10 overs,
00:23and then obviously the openers took that long to 135, 140. Grace got 100, John got a 50 as well.
00:34In terms of the middle overs batting, I thought Django played really well in terms of getting hits 50 and
00:3930-70 balls.
00:40So we got a lot of positives coming out of the last game. It's just for us now to be
00:45consistent a bit longer, you know, batting those middle overs.
00:49Riefer says the team's batting in the middle overs is a work in progress.
00:53But they are working hard to get back to where they were a few years ago.
00:57Batting in the middle overs is something that we continue to work on, and we want to get really consistent
01:03with that.
01:04You know, we're aiming to get batting here. We had 24 to 25 where we were squaring at 6 plus
01:09runs in the middle overs.
01:12But it's a work in progress. Obviously batting in Spain, you know, guys have improved.
01:17But it's still a long way to go for us.
01:20The Bajan hopes the favourable conditions in India can help his charges to find some form and confidence out in
01:27the middle.
01:28Your pitches are very good. Even you watch APL cricket, you get good pitches, fast upfields, small upfields.
01:35All right. So it's a great opportunity as a batsman to score runs in India.
01:40You get value for your shots. You know, the upfields are really quick.
01:44It's just a matter of getting in strong positions and hitting gaps.
01:48You know, in the Caribbean, it's a bit different.
01:49Where our pitches are a bit slower, where you've got to manufacture some more shots or try to create more
01:56power in terms of stroke play.
01:59And Rifa also took the opportunity to back young Jewel Andrew, a talent many see as the future of West
02:06Indies cricket.
02:07Young Jewel Andrew Andrew, he's one of our big talents coming from the Caribbean.
02:11If you look at him playing on the 19th World Cup, I thought he played really well.
02:17He had some good scores.
02:18In the short sense that he, you know, once given the opportunity, he can perform at this level.
02:24You know, when he came on the team, it's for him to gain some experience as quickly as possible, try
02:29to learn on the job.
02:29And whenever his opportunity comes, then he will try to maximize on it.
02:35The West Indies take on India tomorrow morning in Guwahati in the second of three one-day internationals.
