00:17Hi this is Claudio from Coheed in Cambria and these are the top five songs
00:21that define Coheed in Cambria according to me. Gravity's Union. It's sort of what
00:27informed the process that is sort of happening now in the records that we're
00:31putting out. You know we're really sort of tributing the demo process, the writing
00:36process of the song. So any records you hear now you kind of have a bit of the
00:42inception of the song. You know that one to me personally it combines my fear of
00:51driving with also the loss of my uncle. Years and years ago when I was much
00:57younger my grandfather experienced the car accident of his son and I feel like
01:03somehow in you know the family that sort of spilled into my you know my fear of
01:11driving. You know and and so that that is a that's a big one. So I find myself not
01:17driving very much just because I don't want to accidentally hurt anyone that
01:22might be a passenger in the car. It's tough to say if Gravity's Union is a fan
01:26favorite. I mean I think it is. I know it's a favorite to me just because you
01:31know it's um I think the composition is very interesting. It's the song that I knew
01:36when I wrote it that would really benefit you know Josh coming into back into the
01:44band. There's just something about it like from the vocal delivery. I mean that
01:48is from the demo. That is the day I wrote the song. I was sick. I thought I
01:52couldn't there was no way I was going to recreate that character in the studio. So
01:56I decided to keep that. You know even the the rig that I used to record the
02:03guitar which was a it was like a Steph Carpenter eight string into a death by
02:10audio interstellar overdrive into a PV special 130. Like I remember this stuff
02:15because this is the day I wrote it. You know it's the stuff that I don't
02:19remember when we go into the studio and later try to recreate. I feel like that
02:23to me I'm not really connected to nearly as much as the day I write these songs.
02:28So that's what I find so special about that song because you know we ended up
02:32kind of doing that process with the later records. Cyrus Amory is loosely based on
02:36my grandfather. So when in the 70s his son was you know got into a terrible car
02:42accident. My grandfather was the one that was in the ambulance with him when his
02:48son passed and you know it was very very rarely was it talked about in the
02:54house. And so when I created the character of Cyrus Amory I gave bits of my
02:59life and the experiences of my family to that character. And you know one was that
03:05car accident and in that car accident was instead of it being the son it was
03:11actually the wife with child who also my grandfather lived 40 years of his life
03:18without his wife. So that was that connection you know but yeah it's an
03:23experience that the character Cyrus has but it's very much based on the
03:27experiences my life my family have gone through.
03:31The Liars Club. Liars Club is a fan favorite. Liars Club goes off like insane
03:39for a new Coheed song. You know I'm actually really surprised you know being a
03:46band of 25 years to have a song strike a chord like that you know you don't see
03:51that happen. I don't. I mean I know that when I go see a band and I've had this
03:58connection to maybe their past works we're not always that excited about the
04:03new things. Am I wrong? But this is like I don't know I feel like Coheed new
04:08material goes over almost better than old material. If not it does and Liars Club
04:13is proof. To me Liars Club is is essentially about you know accepting you
04:20know the farcities that you can construct when your life kind of sucks you know.
04:27And if you could have like a significant other that can go along with you in that
04:31well to lie together is and and to be blissfully ignorant in in a farce seems
04:37pretty cool to me. So that's essentially what the song kind of is about and and
04:45yeah and it and it crushes. Welcome Home. Welcome Home is is a love song and I know
04:51that's hard to imagine but it is it's very much a love song I mean it's a song
04:57about heartbreak you know when I was younger I experienced a pretty
05:01significant heartbreak and I didn't know how to deal with it and the only way I
05:05best I could was writing a song that was very angry aggressive you know just
05:11really didn't know how to communicate those feelings other than being angry
05:19and that's kind of what Welcome Home is you know it's welcome to this new
05:25version of your life this new persona that you've taken on because you know I
05:30before this I was fine you know and now I'm not so yeah that's essentially what it
05:40is I mean as far as it goes in the Amory Wars you know when I wrote that record
05:44of Good Apollo because it was so much about heartbreak it was really hard for
05:51me to then hide it in a piece of fiction right like you know all of these records
05:56are very much based after my my life like every one of them is a chapter and I
06:01just had a hard time being a front man and conveying myself like you know as an
06:06open book to the public so I created a piece of fiction to hide behind but when
06:11I wrote Good Apollo it was so clearly obvious a record about somebody angry at
06:18you know the the life that they were given in the separation of a significant
06:23other that I realized if I'm gonna do this properly within the story I'm gonna
06:29have to cut the story in half and show it from both the characters perspective and
06:34the writers respect perspective and how the writer choices and things he's
06:40experienced influenced the characters motives in the story so um so yeah that's
06:45that's kind of what that connection is everything evil everything evil is a
06:50wacky song and I think because that I feel like that was the song on the first
06:56record that made us stand out from everything sort of I made it made us unique I
07:03think you know I'm not entirely sure I heard many songs like it coming up that
07:12one was a challenge to write because you know it was on sort of the fringes of like
07:19how to make the concept work how to make my life sort of work you know I was also
07:25influenced by odd things like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre like you know and and
07:32somehow that like kind of spilled into it so really the identity of the concept was kind
07:36of still forming when those songs were being written also I was just trying to learn how to
07:41communicate on that album you know who I was and how that fit into this other narrative that
07:48I was creating so but I just think the musically it's a piece all its own Atlas well that's
07:58clearly a song about my son Atlas is such an important song to me and such an emotional song
08:03that I mean I think we've only played it once you know because I just have a hard time executing
08:10it
08:10you know I wrote that song before my son was born clearly color before the Sun was without the concept
08:16so it was just you know it was just me cataloging the moments and feelings before my son was born
08:23and
08:23that was sort of the plan the title of that record you know the color before the Sun so you
08:28know I
08:29I wrote that for him you know I knew that when he'd come into the world that things are going
08:36to be
08:36different this lifestyle would be very different that the desire to be home would be more intense
08:45um but at the same time you know potentially beneficial as like you know I think my wife
08:53is the stronger of the two of us and uh probably the better influence um you know I but you
09:01know it
09:01was uh it was so many feelings in writing that song um you know but yeah I wrote it for
