Ukrainian metallers Jinjer on the five songs that have defined their career so far
Transcript
00:00I dropped a tear, like a poop.
00:03Drop a poop.
00:04A tear.
00:06I dropped a tear.
00:08It's so touching.
00:09Moving.
00:10Yeah, this is the word.
00:11Moving.
00:17Hi, guys.
00:18This is Ginger.
00:20And this is five songs that defined our Korean discography.
00:25I can only dwell on the lyrics, basically.
00:30So, I remember writing it.
00:33I remember writing the song.
00:36And in the beginning, it should have been called something...
00:41Oh, no.
00:42So, it should have been I Speak Astrology.
00:47There's I Speak Astronomy, I guess, in the list, right?
00:50Yeah.
00:51So, I guess we combine these two.
00:54Great ideas.
00:55Yeah.
00:56Because the first one, I Speak Astronomy, should have been called I Speak Astrology.
01:01And I wanted to sing about Pisces, you know.
01:06Being a Pisces, being a representative of the zodiac sign.
01:12And, yeah.
01:14So, at the end, like, every time it happens, lyrics write themselves.
01:24Mm-hmm.
01:26So, I Speak Astronomy became I Speak Astronomy.
01:29And the Pisces, I was like, okay.
01:31So, I guess I should just actually write a song about this sign of zodiac.
01:40So, yeah, it fell on this melody.
01:45And I guess the music video, that's what actually brought attention to the song.
01:54Yeah, because it was the last single on King of Everything.
02:00And prior to that, we had a couple of already big singles.
02:04And we were not aiming at, like, this song to become big.
02:11It was a simple video, just shooting in the studio.
02:14Yeah, it was like a filler, just like a filler, you know.
02:19It wasn't supposed to be big.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Kind of low effort video.
02:24Low effort video, in some way.
02:27Yeah, that had a big...
02:30Explosion, yeah, just the following.
02:32And generally, it got viral on YouTube.
02:35To be honest, do not believe in astrology at all.
02:38Well, Pisces do.
02:39I am a science guy.
02:41Pisces actually do.
02:42I do value the cultural aspect of it.
02:44The whole thing, but it's not for me to believe it.
02:48I still believe this is one of the greatest songs we've ever written in all the respects.
02:54Like music-wise, arrangements, vocal lines, just everything.
02:59And the topic itself.
03:03I don't know if I ever told you, but for a very long time I was listening to that song.
03:08And I cried.
03:08I'd almost cry.
03:09Yeah, because of the lyrics, yeah.
03:12Because of the science.
03:13You're a scientific person.
03:15No, it's not.
03:15It's not because of the science.
03:16Because one of the greatest values of this song for me is that it's actually sort of a science fiction
03:22movie.
03:24Romance.
03:24Well, it's a romance.
03:25Yeah.
03:26Science fiction.
03:27When the poetry meets science.
03:31It's just a shell.
03:34Inside of it is a romance.
03:36It's a very true love story.
03:37And it's like this movie, Passengers.
03:41Yeah?
03:41Oh, yeah.
03:42So, yeah.
03:43They are on the ship.
03:44And it's future and all these futuristic things.
03:47But the movie is about love.
03:50And this song is like that.
03:52It's kind of creepy that film.
03:53It is.
03:54I love it.
03:55It is.
03:56Basically, it was about people who try to teach you morals.
04:02More of a, like, teach you how to live.
04:07They have their own idols in their head.
04:09So, they try them on you, basically.
04:12And they compare you to themselves.
04:17And you don't fit in their picture of this world.
04:20So, they try to teach you.
04:21They try to change you.
04:23And I had a, it's based on the, let's say, true story.
04:27Well, I, of course, I made up, I made up a story about that.
04:32But basically, I had a very sad, for me, sad experience with making a friend.
04:44And then, turned out, she just spread a lot of shit about me on her social media.
04:51Because she didn't like what I posted.
04:54So, she just, boom, made, again, a big thing out of it.
04:59So, I had to write a song about it.
05:02Yeah.
05:04Because, of course, we're different.
05:06She was a Pisces, too.
05:07I really hated, at that time, I wrote the lyrics for the song.
05:10I really hated fall as a season, autumn.
05:15Because, where I lived at that time, what I saw from my window was another building.
05:23Getting wet under showers and heavy rains.
05:27And all got, like, dark gray and with spots.
05:34Like, ugly.
05:36Ugly picture.
05:37So, I really hated it.
05:39Now, I love it.
05:40I love autumn.
05:42But the song is still there.
05:43So, maybe I will write something.
05:46Like, a sequel?
05:48Yeah, a sequel.
05:49To the song, yeah.
05:51So, and that was really, like, a depressing time.
05:54I lived alone in a rented apartment.
05:59It's like three rooms.
06:01I felt, like, really, you know.
06:02Once the autumn starts or, like, November, it gets, like, fucking lonely.
06:09Especially when you return from a tour.
06:13We all together and I returned.
06:16Like, everyone returned to their houses.
06:19And their wives and girlfriends waiting for them.
06:22I was, like, completely lonely.
06:23It's so fucking well.
06:24I'm fucking cold.
06:26So, I started writing.
06:28And, yeah.
06:30Because of that feeling, the song started as a funeral.
06:38But then, actually, it turned into a really good one.
06:42Another song that really tells my story.
06:45So, basically, in Slavic culture, there's a name for alcohol.
06:54It's a green serpent.
06:56So, it's, like, literal translation.
06:59Literal translation.
07:00I was, yeah.
07:00I was actually looking for equivalent in, probably, like, English.
07:06But, I only found the devil's drink or something.
07:11But, that's not, the image is not very interesting.
07:20You're bright, yeah.
07:21And, I really like the animal.
07:24So, yeah.
07:25Alcohol and alcohol addiction.
07:29It's gonna be two years already in December since I had my last drink.
07:35And, yeah.
07:38So, that's a little story about that.
07:41Yeah.
07:42About how sinners are turned into, how saints are turned into sinners in one hour after they drink.
07:51T to恈悋 now.
07:53Living happen tomorrow.
07:54And, yeah.
07:59We'd look to this early on and see my future.
08:01And so, yeah.
08:01We love you.
