00:21The Sangre Grandi Regional Corporation has received close to 100 incident reports following Thursday's inclement weather.
00:30Corporation officials joined Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Philip Alexander, today for a tour of affected residences.
00:38Renessa Cutting was there and files this report.
00:41How it happened is the rain started to fall and when the rain started to fall we started to see
00:48that the side of the roof over there kept going up and down, up and down.
00:52And my son is a praying person so he just started praying.
00:55But even though he was praying it kept going up, coming down about three times.
00:59And then the whole roof just went up and it went straight that way.
01:04A piece went all the way up by a neighbour's house up there.
01:07Gusty winds and heavy rainfall brought destruction to several parts of Sandy Grandi on Thursday, leaving mangled roofs, caved-in
01:16ceilings and sudden mattresses in their wake.
01:19But above all, Mary Paris is giving thanks for life and limb after the incident.
01:25One of my small grandsons came down. It pushed him down as a matter of fact. The breeze blew him
01:29down from there. It blew him down.
01:31And I tried to get him out of there because I don't want the brick to cover him up because
01:36the brick was starting to fall from upstairs.
01:38All that brick you see outside and front. And it came from there. A beam came down.
01:44But as soon as I got him out from there, the beam came down.
01:47And if that beam came down on him and I, both of us, was going to be not here right
01:51now.
01:52My God. So no injuries?
01:53Well, he got a little injury. Nothing much really. We took him to the hospital and he's okay right now.
02:00The Pine Settlement residence is but one of nearly 100 affected households across the Sandy Grandi Regional Corporation.
02:08This particular community, as you can see, there are challenges. There are challenges to things like title.
02:13We are dealing in what is essentially a squatter community here.
02:17But that still doesn't preclude people from getting assistance during a disaster or crisis.
02:23So we have a fine line to walk. We have a technical team. They're going to help them, guide them
02:27for the electrical team.
02:29We do have relief grants. So we can work from that point of view outside of what the Sandy Grandi
02:35Corporation and the ministry,
02:37I mean the member parliament for the area. So there are a lot of groups working here.
02:41The disaster management unit of the Sandy Grandi Regional Corporation was on the ground from Thursday.
02:47Rendering assistance to affected purchases.
02:50What type of financial assistance is available to these persons in order to fix back their website?
02:57Well, we have different agencies that offer different grants.
03:00We have self-help that normally assist with materials.
03:04We have social services that normally deals with the appliances and so on.
03:09The corporation itself don't necessarily give out the grants.
03:12What we do is the reports we try and assist with the temporary relief so the families can have something
03:19comfortable to sleep.
03:20And the displacement, I know the member, it has some families that were displaced that the member of parliament would
03:26have hosted them in his office at the corporation.
03:28At this point, what we're doing is giving temporary relief as was stated earlier on.
03:33We give tarpaulins, mattresses, and at some point, hampers, foodstuff where it's needed.
03:40Can you give a list for some of the areas that were affected?
03:42We have Barbwande, we have right here where we are.
03:45We have Milk Road, Toure, and Pine Settlement and all these areas.
03:52Most of the areas that was affected was within the Tuku, Sanigran, the area, this constituency.
03:59So we know the member of parliament have been leasing.
04:03Also, he would have brought in a team and is working closely with the affected families.
