Minister of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis says T&T should be proud to boast of having over 300 community centres. The Minister was speaking at the opening of the Morvant Central Community Centre, which had been delayed for a number of years, most recently, due to damage from bullets. Rynessa Cutting reports.

00:00Residents of Mova Central can now benefit from the newly opened Mova Central Community Centre,
00:06one of over 300 such facilities in the country.
00:10If you look across the region, Trinidad and Tobago is the only country that boasts of over 300 community centres.
00:20That is the cause of government or leaders or people.
00:28Understand what national development is all about.
00:31If we say the family represents the heart of the nation, then the community must be the lungs.
00:40It breathes life.
00:42Minister Kajo also noted proudly that the community centre is the first to be constructed by locals.
00:48However, she lamented that the state faces many challenges in their attempts to bring development to some communities.
00:55It's not only about doing the procurement, but it's finding a contractor that will do the work,
01:04that will work in your community, that will stay and is financially capable and will go the long haul until completion day.
01:15The opening should have been last week, Wednesday.
01:19But we couldn't open last week, Wednesday, because we had some work to do as it relates to some leaking.
01:27But more importantly, fixing bullet holes on the walls of the facility.
01:37And Mr Leonce said, we are opening this centre, even if I go in there and fix it myself.
01:47MP for Lavantale East Mover, Adrian Leonce, labelled the centre a place of transformation
01:53as he stressed that community centres are spaces where members of the community can foster unity and togetherness,
02:00benefit from government programmes and even bring their own value to the communities in which they reside.
02:07We are going to be able to give hope to people that feel hopeless.
02:12We are going to be able to give directions to people that lost their way.
02:17Picture the Mover Lavantale Chamber of Commerce, where businesses come together
02:26and have a common goal of better developing goods within our community.
