00:00Omar Cooper Jr. is now listed as week to week with the hope that he can return within the next
00:05four
00:05weeks. So what did the MRI show about the ankle that makes him week to week versus just out for
00:13multiple weeks? It involves this major stabilizing ligament of the two shin bones in your leg and
00:20lower foot. And there's another ankle ligament as well that can be involved called that medial
00:24deltoid ligament on the inner part of your ankle. These are the injuries that happen really with
00:28the mechanism of getting rolled up on where that foot is planted on the field and then the leg
00:33gets twisted while the foot stays trapped beneath it. So it effectively causes this foot to twist
00:38outward and upward. It can be pretty nasty injuries and the biggest question really is with these
00:43injuries are they stable? The MRI with a good hands-on physical exam is really helpful to deduce
00:49that and it's not so much what the MRI shows us but really rather what it doesn't show us. In
00:54Omar's
00:55case really it's likely no fracture, no significant involvement of that medial deltoid ligament
01:01and no widening of the ankle joint under stress. Let's say you have a patient that's not a first
01:07round wide receiver. How would you treat and rehab that person? If we're dealing with a high ankle
01:14sprain like what Cooper has, we'll be slower, we'll be more meticulous and we're probably going to
01:18immobilize for longer. Whereas the lower lateral ankle sprains, those are the ones that we can get
01:22active pretty quickly. We work on pain control, we get weight bearing early and often and we mobilize
01:28that joint with some physical therapy.
