00:00It was a gruesome injury to, I can't imagine experiencing it, to see out of field.
00:05That injury, an open ankle fracture dislocation is, you know, basically three separate injuries.
00:11First, you have the open injury, which is what we usually refer to as compound fractures.
00:16We don't use that term anymore. It's now referred to as open fractures,
00:19which means that the broken bone is exposed to the air.
00:21The second part of that injury is the dislocation where the ankle actually
00:26dissipates out of the side and you can see the foot turning down to the knee.
00:29The last part of it is the broken fibula, which is the bone on the outside of the ankle.
00:34And that part was the part that was fixed with weights and screws.
00:39Now, addressing all three of those injuries happens at the same time in the same surgery.
00:45And the benefit, actually, of this kind of injury over, say, an ACL is that it's primarily a bony injury.
00:51And so as long as you get that broken bone fixed and that bone feels according to plan,
00:57you can start to attack rehab in a much more aggressive manner than you could
01:00with a medicine injury of a high ankle sprain or an ACL tear.
01:06Million dollar question here.
01:08If you were treating a patient who didn't play professional football,
01:12what would be your plan for their rehab and their recovery process?
01:15And could theirs be as aggressive as a scat's?
01:18As long as they heal their bone, within that six, 12-week mark after surgery,
01:24you can kind of progress them just as fast, you know.
01:27The whole week recovery after they do it like this is some kind of splint or a cast
01:31for six weeks after surgery.
01:33And no weight bearing on the ankles.
01:35That means crutches and no weight.
01:37Starting at the six-week mark, you're starting to put weight down
01:40and starting to progress through walking and getting your strength back in the ankle.
01:44And around that three-month mark, as long as the ball would be an extra bow
01:49and start progressing them as fast as they can follow it.
