A frightening moment unfolded at Citi Field on Thursday night when New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was forced to leave the game after a serious collision with teammate Nolan McLean.
The incident happened in the sixth inning during the Mets’ matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies. Phillies outfielder Justin Crawford hit a slow grounder along the first-base line, prompting both Young and McLean to move toward the ball. Young dove to make the play while McLean tried to jump over him. During the attempt, McLean’s knee appeared to strike the side of Young’s head.
Young fell face-down and remained motionless on the field for several moments, immediately bringing medical personnel onto the field. Trainers stabilized his neck and carefully evaluated him before placing him on a stretcher.
As Young was taken away, he raised his thumb toward the crowd, giving fans a reassuring gesture as Citi Field responded with an ovation.
Mark Vientos took over at first base when play resumed. The Mets had not released an official medical update at the time, with further evaluation and concussion testing expected.
