00:00This one, I guess I'm not as surprised.
00:02I got to say, as a manager, you know you're going to get fired, Peter.
00:06I mean, that's obvious.
00:07But for Rob Thompson, man, I mean, he took over for Girardi.
00:09I thought he did a really good job.
00:11But things just went so far south this season.
00:14So let's start there.
00:15What happened?
00:16Well, they went 9-19.
00:18And I do think that it's a little unfair to Rob Thompson
00:22because when he got brought on in 2022, right,
00:25he went on that run with the Phillies.
00:27And then in 2023, he wins 90 games.
00:292024, he wins 95 games.
00:312025, he wins 96 games.
00:34And then he gets off to a bad start,
00:36a really bad stretch playing the Cubs, the Braves, the Cubs,
00:39and then the Braves again,
00:41two of the, what, five best teams in Major League Baseball.
00:44And now we fire him?
00:45And we go to Don Mattingly,
00:47who has not had a ton of success in a managerial role.
00:51That's why he wasn't currently a manager until he is now.
00:54And it's also very interesting that they did offer the job
00:57or reportedly offered the job to Alex Cora.
01:00And he said no.
01:01At the end of the day,
01:03this bad start is more on the Phillies.
01:06I was listening to your last segment
01:08when you guys were kind of talking about the Phillies offense
01:10being better than the Giants.
01:11I'm not so sure with this current unit right now, right?
01:14They got Felix Reyes hitting in the four hole.
01:17This offense just hasn't gotten going at all.
01:19And I can't blame Rob Thompson.
01:21If you are going to blame Rob Thompson,
01:23then you should give him his flowers for three straight 90-win seasons
01:27and the last two over 95 wins.
01:30So I just thought this was an overreaction, really.
01:34Yeah.
01:34And when you look at it, you know, this one, to me,
01:36I don't know how you feel about it, Peter.
01:38I'm glad I have you here.
01:40So I'm making the claim that the Red Sox, by the way,
01:46with Breslau could hit the,
01:48I mean, I hate to say it, the sort of reset button
01:51if things don't go well and Breslau will just say,
01:53oh, you know, my bad.
01:54You know, let me get my young guys going.
01:57I got my young manager here who knows these guys.
01:59Dom Browski, you know as well as I do,
02:02ain't going to do that.
02:03I mean, this guy has one in Montreal
02:05and one with the Marlins and one with the Tigers
02:08and one with the Red Sox and one with the Phillies.
02:10Like there's no reset button here.
02:12And so I could honestly see them pushing even harder, Peter,
02:16where I'm not so sure about Boston and their situation.
02:19A little different for me.
02:20Yeah, I think these two situations are different.
02:22Like you say, with the Phillies,
02:24it does feel like this is the end of their window, right?
02:27You got Bryce Harper, you got Kyle Schwarber,
02:29you got Trey Turner all on the wrong side of 30.
02:32And then you have Zach Wheeler coming back from injury.
02:35You know, Christopher Sanchez pitching at the peak of his powers
02:38with Jesus Zardo there as well.
02:40And, you know, whatever you can get from Aaron Nola.
02:42And the Phillies do have some young players,
02:44but the core, the crux of this team,
02:47what has made the Phillies so good in recent years
02:50has been the guys who are aging.
02:52So it just feels like Dombrowski is saying to himself,
02:55I cannot waste a game.
02:57If I don't feel like Rob Thompson is the answer
03:00for the rest of the season, might as well cut bait now.
03:03And, of course, promote Don Mattingly.
03:06Cora and Breslow, it is a young team.
03:09And it has felt like Cora and Breslow
03:12just never really got along.
03:14So if Breslow really wants the team that he created
03:17on the field exactly like he wants it,
03:20and Cora continues to fight him on that,
03:23that's a different situation than a Phillies team
03:25that feels like they need to win now,
03:27while Breslow wants his young players to thrive,
03:31and maybe he doesn't think Cora is the best guy
03:34to get it all out of them.
03:35I disagree with Breslow, but it's not my job.
03:39Right, of course.
03:40Listen, we'll see.
03:41I mean, Dombrowski has been around for 40 years
03:43being a president.
03:44He is not in this to, I mean,
03:46it may be over for him, by the way, after this year,
03:48but he is not in it for this year to lose.
