Three people were killed and another person was hospitalized after an NBC4 Los Angeles news helicopter crashed Tuesday night in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, authorities said.
The aircraft, identified as NewsChopper4, went down shortly before 7 p.m. between two commercial buildings on North Mason Avenue. The Los Angeles Fire Department said 56 firefighters responded to the scene, where the crash triggered a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers.
Four people were assessed at the scene. Three were pronounced dead, while the fourth was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition. Authorities said one of the victims was a pedestrian in a parking lot, but it was not immediately clear whether the other victims were inside the helicopter or on the ground.
The helicopter had reportedly been covering a deadly Metro bus crash in the area when the incident occurred.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed grief over the deaths, saying her thoughts were with the victims’ families and loved ones.
Authorities have not yet released details about what caused the helicopter to crash.
