A moment involving New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the 9/11 Memorial has sparked a wave of online criticism.

During the reading of the victims’ names, a television camera appeared to show Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez smiling and speaking to each other while a mourner was visibly emotional nearby. Critics quickly condemned the moment, arguing that Ground Zero should remain a solemn and respectful place.

Rep. Wesley Hunt called Ground Zero “sacred ground” and said September 11 should not be treated as a political or networking event. Meghan McCain and other critics also questioned why the two appeared to be laughing.

However, Michael Ragusa, a former member of Rudy Giuliani’s entourage who said he was standing nearby, disputed the interpretation. He claimed the footage was taken out of context and that Ocasio-Cortez was simply greeting Mamdani, while other politicians were also talking and laughing nearby.

The exact nature of their conversation remains unclear.
