Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold’s new NFL season got off to a rough start after he suffered a hip injury just five snaps into the team’s opener against the New England Patriots.

Darnold was taken down by Patriots linebacker Dre’Mont Jones during Seattle’s opening drive and appeared to land awkwardly on the field. He initially jogged toward the sideline but soon began limping before entering the medical tent. After being evaluated by the Seahawks’ medical staff, Darnold headed to the locker room and was ruled out of the game.

Drew Lock stepped in at quarterback, giving Seattle an experienced backup while the team awaited further evaluation of Darnold’s injury.

The setback is especially concerning for Seattle after Darnold delivered a strong 2025 season, throwing for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 67.7% of his passes.

Seahawks fans will now hope the injury isn’t serious enough to keep their starting quarterback sidelined for an extended period.
