An Ohio man has been found guilty after prosecutors said he attempted to shoot his ex-wife at point-blank range inside a Toledo restaurant.
Matthew Exton, a 43-year-old former attorney, confronted his ex-wife, Kada Malone, while she was having dinner with her parents at Sabira restaurant on April 11, 2025. Surveillance footage captured the disturbing encounter.
According to prosecutors, Exton initially entered the restaurant, ordered a drink for Malone’s table and then left. He later returned carrying a handgun, approached Malone and pointed the weapon directly at her head before pulling the trigger.
The gun did not fire because its safety was still engaged. A waiter then tackled Exton from behind, preventing him from attempting another shot. Investigators said the firearm had a round in the chamber and additional ammunition in the magazine.
A jury found Exton guilty of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault and firearm specifications. The assault charges involved Malone’s parents.
Exton also caused a disturbance after the verdict and had to be removed from the courtroom.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 21, 2026.
