Stefon Diggs’ first touchdown with the Washington Commanders should have been a highlight, but his celebration quickly became a costly mistake.

During Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Diggs scored on a 10-yard touchdown after creating separation from cornerback Cooper DeJean. He then jumped onto the goal post, unaware that using it as a prop is against NFL rules. The celebration resulted in a 15-yard penalty.

That penalty had a major impact. Washington trailed 17-9 before Diggs’ touchdown made it 17-15. Coach Dan Quinn said the team planned to attempt a two-point conversion, but the penalty forced Washington to kick the extra point instead.

The Commanders eventually lost 24-22 and later failed on another two-point attempt.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels reflected on the mistake, saying, “You’ve just got to be smarter. We got to know situations and situational football ... We’ve just got to be smart. There is a time and place for everything and celebrations. I'm pretty sure at that point we could have gone for two.”

The incident showed how one celebration can potentially change a game and momentum.
