Mamdani blasts feds for waging 'campaign of violence and terror'

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sharply criticized the federal government over its immigration policies, accusing the Trump administration of targeting immigrant communities.  Speaking as New York City and five other sanctuary jurisdictions announced a lawsuit against the administration’s expanded public charge rule, Mamdani said, “The federal government has waged a campaign of violence and terror.”  He continued, “ICE has broken into our neighbors' homes, work sites and schools. And it has targeted those who have come to our country in search of refuge and in search of opportunity. These actions are an assault on our civic fabric, on our shared values. And no matter how much destruction they have already caused, it continues.”  Mamdani also highlighted immigrants’ contributions to New York City, saying, “Immigrants from every country, from every continent, who speak every language and worship in every conceivable way, drive our buses and our trains, teach our children how to read, and tend to us when we are sick.”  He added, “Immigrants fought for the 8-hour workday for fair pay and workplace protections that deliver dignity into the lives of so many.”  Mamdani described the new policy as a “gross illegality” that could cause “irreparable damage,” while the administration says the changes are intended to protect American taxpayers. 00:05in no small part because of the immigrants who helped to build it. Immigrants laid the

00:11foundations of our bridges and erected towers that stretch into the sky. Immigrants wrote the

00:16poems that stir our hearts and sang the songs that make us dance. Immigrants fought for the

00:21eight-hour workday, for fair pay, and workplace protections that delivered dignity into the

00:26lives of so many. Immigrants from every country, from every continent, who speak every language

00:31and worship in every conceivable way, drive our buses and our trains, teach our children

00:36how to read, and tend to us when we are sick. Immigrants are New Yorkers, and yet we know

00:43that all too often they are not treated as such. The federal government has waged a campaign

00:48of violence and terror. Unaccompanied children have been forced to navigate our judicial system

00:54alone. Ice has broken into our neighbors' homes, work sites, and schools, and it has targeted

00:59those who have come to our country in search of refuge and in search of opportunity. These

01:05actions are an assault on our civic fabric, on our shared values, and no matter how much

01:11destruction they have already caused, it continues. To get to any of us, you will have to get through

01:17all of us. That is why today we are confronting this injustice with the solidarity and action

01:22that it demands. New York City is leading a coalition of cities and counties, including

01:27Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County, to sue the federal government

01:33for the gross illegality of their new public charge rule and the irreparable damage that

01:38it will cost.
