00:00kind of got your uh thoughts and big deal not a deal about michigan state um overall took care
00:07of business first two games and uh now big test this big test is one that that the end result
00:16you know sure beating notre dame would be awesome competing making them make plays
00:25making notre dame have to have the starters in like all of that that that's what i'm want to know
00:31that's where you'll see if there's an immediate impact to me with pat fitzgerald just to the
00:36overall toughness of the program to get him back to being the michigan state that was such a pain
00:40in the ass to play against right yeah i mean toughness is uh it's been a hallmark of spartan
00:47teams over the years when they've been good they've been tough and i think one of the big reasons you
00:52hired pat fitzgerald at michigan state is because you want to bring that toughness back you want to
00:57bring that discipline back and we've seen a lot of that through the first two weeks of the season
01:03um you know the game last week against uh eastern jordan hall is out somebody else step up and players
01:10stepped up and they made plays and the defense really came through last week and particularly
01:15in the second half they didn't give up any points and overall gave up i think was 219 yards and
01:20offense to eastern michigan uh in the meantime down in ann arbor michigan upsets oklahoma now um
01:28you know it's interesting because i think every fan base has had this experience and that is a player
01:36that that you struggle mightily with that tortures you in some ways when you play him again
01:45you're scared to death of what he might do and for michigan fans that was john matier last year john
01:50matier came out of that oklahoma game and i remember being on the bus to the airport after the game
01:57and
01:57listening to national coverage and i'm talking about matier emerging as a heisman candidate uh with the
02:03performance against michigan on that saturday night and so when you come back the next season
02:09you know you have nothing but respect and fear of what john matier is going to do and what isaiah
02:14satania can do the wide receiver and michigan's defense michigan's defense did an unbelievable job
02:21on matier oklahoma was getting their offensive line three of their guys were hurt two of them came back
02:27healthy um and they made his life miserable in the backfield and when he had time to throw
02:34it felt like with the exception of beers the tight end the wide receivers didn't hurt him um
02:41you know that was it was a validation performance what they did against western michigan defensively
02:47offensively it felt like they took the offense out for a test drive against western michigan
02:52and tried to see you know what worked what didn't and found out learned a lot and came back and
02:58did just
02:59enough to beat to beat oklahoma um they're still i i mean what's the one dimension you know people
03:08talk about your offense as one dimensional i'm not sure where they are with the throw game but it
03:13doesn't look like they're going to be very advanced although i saw some stuff from bryce i liked i'll
03:17give you one example here in a second and i'm not sure where they are with the run game because
03:21the
03:21running backs aren't doing much the one dimension might be bryce running the football at this point it
03:26was good enough to beat oklahoma which means if your defense is good it'll be good enough to beat
03:29a lot of teams on the schedule but it's suboptimal to not have more options offensively the one thing
03:36i really liked about bryce there was a play in that game where you could see him work his way
03:41through
03:41his progressions where he dropped back it was a slant pattern it looked like jj buchanan was his first
03:47read and buchanan was covered and he rolled out to the left created some time and saving on hider came
03:55open
03:55down the the sideline and and bryce found him and i was like that's the kind of thing you have
04:02to do to play
04:03quarterback at this level is to be able to go to other options when your first read isn't there
04:08and i felt like there was an example of what maybe bryce from week one to week two a lot
04:12of work to do
04:13offensively for sure can the defense and special teams carry the day while the offense catches up well the defense
04:19is
04:19great i mean there's no question after what they did to oklahoma and and john matteir that you can
04:25feel pretty confident that's a really good defense you know the transfers that came in are are hitting
04:30the ground running they're doing a really good job there but the big concern to me it's it's it's
04:36always amazing and and yet understandable people will focus on the quarterback it's not the quarterback
04:41i'd be concerned about it's the running game this is a rushing offense that has some really good backs
04:47at least on paper the stable should be outstanding and they're averaging less than four yards a carry
04:53they're averaging 129 yards rushing per game which is not much and how much of that is the quarterback
04:59that's taking up the big bulk of that that's a concern he and then you have to ask yourself okay
05:04is the running game not getting on track because teams just flat out don't respect bryce underwood
05:09as a quarterback and they're going to pin their ears back and stop the run or is this a problem
05:16that the offensive line just isn't is up to speed in terms of opening up holes in the running game
05:21to get these guys free could be in the meantime ohio state texas
05:27did you watch that whole thing and what did you think i i i watched most of it i would
05:32say that
05:32um the second half of the game it was the only game that i was watching on tv but i
05:36was also doom
05:36scrolling on my on my phone um so i was not paying a total attention to it but enough where
05:43i'm like
05:43wait a minute is this game slipping away from ohio state is this really happening yeah that was
05:48really happening and to see texas score 21 points in the fourth quarter it's uh it was startling
05:55because ohio state at times looks like this is just the team that reloads every year you know this
06:00is they've got the the quarterback is second year starting there now they've obviously got jeremiah
06:05smith who's might be the best player in the country um but get that they let this team into it
06:11they
06:12didn't they only scored three points in the second half and their fourth quarter collapse
06:16from a defensive standpoint was horrific for them and obviously the worst outcome they could see with
06:23texas scoring uh at the end of the game to to win it by a point it's it's bad for
06:28ohio state but at the
06:29same point it's also if you're going to lose a game better to lose in week two than week 12
06:34or week 13
06:35yeah a lot of criticism of ryan day because he punted once with the ball on the texas 38 yard
06:42line they missed a field goal that would have been a kill shot field goal it feels like ohio state's
06:48got some of those on the resume um and then should he have let him score and the thing about
06:53letting
06:53him score is they would have more time in a timeout and he decided to play defense when you decide
07:00to
07:00play defense when a team's got a first and goal situation and they need a touchdown you got four
07:06downs to get it to keep it from getting in the end zone you gotta either get the four downs
07:11worth of
07:12stops or you gotta get a turnover and i'm not gonna say i feel bad for brian day but it
07:17almost worked
07:18that ball at the goal line came out the one that arch manning ended up with um and they they
07:23couldn't
07:23really see anything on the replay but that's what he was going for and it didn't work out and he's
07:28let
07:28team score before um i saw him do it in ann arbor back in 2021 on a hassan hoskins touchdown
07:35so he's
07:36tried that before it didn't work then and you know this time he went the other way and it didn't
07:40work
07:40so anytime you do anything it doesn't work the other option was better right 248-539-9797 nate's in
07:47detroit hello nate hey how y'all feel what's up hey uh yeah i've been listening to a lot of
07:55stuff about
07:55the quarterback situation in michigan um as long as i've been watching me watching michigan they
08:02they don't develop quarterbacks too they mostly develop offensive linemen defensive people things
08:09of that nature another question i have do y'all think that the offense is uh scheme fits
08:15right uh underwood's skill set well two things nate anytime you change over an entire coaching staff
08:23whatever they did in the past doesn't really matter right can this staff develop well they
08:28hung up can this staff develop them that's that's you know what does jason beck who had
08:34brennan armstrong and bryce perkins at virginia and devin dampier like how how does he develop
08:41quarterbacks how does kyle whittingham coy detmer develop quarterbacks what's happened with previous
08:46staffs have nothing to do with what bryce is going through and do they are they catering to
08:52his skill set they certainly were doing so more in game two than they were in game one i think
08:57game
08:57one they were hoping to be able to put some stuff on tape figure some stuff out game two they're
09:02like
09:02all right how do we win the game with what we have well the thing that's not helping them out
09:06is they're
09:06not running the football i mean you need to have time to breathe here and they're not because they're
09:10not getting falling forward for five yards falling for for seven yards and bust out and have a 25
09:17yard run they're not doing that so far through two games this week against utep you would expect that
09:23okay this is something we can see given that utep was crushed by oklahoma was a 51 to nothing
09:28uh when they played so you know you do your your little math thing and transitive property is that
09:34what you're doing that's a dangerous game to play well you got to do it at some point we're going
09:38to do
09:38it here do you expect them to blow out utep yes but it'd be nice for michigan's sake if they
09:44could
09:44do it by running the football effectively and then that'll help slow the game down for bryce
09:50underwood because the defense is going to have to respect what you can do with running the football
09:54i think they'd feel real good if they you know put up 250 on the ground for sure mark in
09:59shelby
09:59township hello mark hi fellas how you doing love the show thank you uh far as uh i feel about
10:06the same
10:07um i'm not worried about jmo but his drops i think he'll be fine uh far as the secondary uh
10:14i do have
10:15my concerns about the secondary the old line will be fine it's got a gel a little bit and uh
10:22once we
10:22get kate mays back and brian branch that'll make a difference for sure and uh curtis joseph i don't
10:31believe he'll be back if he's not back by now i don't think he'll be back what's your thoughts
10:37kirby joseph not curtis joseph um i'm sorry yeah look there's plenty of reason to doubt whether or
10:44not kirby joseph is going to come back i don't think kujo's coming back either um the problem and
10:50i i do this too and i gotta guard against it i kate mays and brian branch will help and
10:56by the time they
10:56come back somebody else is going to be hurt you just hope that it's not as costly as those two
11:02because this game has become so much about attrition the man games lost stat from a year
11:07ago are disturbing because it makes you feel like hey if you're good and you stay healthy you can win
11:12the whole thing because the first team and the third team with the fewest man games lost last year
11:17with the two super bowl participants new england and seattle so cross your fingers hope for good luck
11:24yep maze and branch back will help
11:29good look i just i i'd love to have that it would be the great story the second half of
11:35the season
11:35this team is clicking on all cylinders and i'm hopeful that brian branch is going to be a difference
11:41maker again but coming back off the injuries coming back from it's going to take some time so i don't
11:48know is he going to be better than what they have he has to be in order to play right
11:52yep kirby joseph
11:54is such a question mark if he's going to contribute at all okay um the best of what dan campbell
12:00told
12:00our morning show and then jameer gibbs admitted he did something i wonder how many fans do this
12:05we'll get to that today at 12 55 it's karshan anderson here on 971
