00:11on friday night i turned it on late in the first half and i caught the third goal of the

00:17was a really nice goal and i left it on as background noise okay so i look up occasionally
00:25i did have it on yes cool i did you were you entertained were you like okay this is is

00:33anything that will make you go back for our next game the only thing that makes me go and i

00:38here's the truth so then over the weekend because the games the cool thing about the world cup is
00:43that all the games are spaced out there's always a game on there's always a game on in fact there
00:47might be one now i think there is so it's cool um that there's always a game on even if
00:53you don't
00:53have any rooting interest whatever the other thing is cool is that the games are all in 4k
01:00yep so you know i'm a 4k snob because there's just not enough that's broadcast in 4k and if i
01:04finally
01:05get a chance to watch it then i will it's a function that is uh you're not normally utilized on
01:10the tv
01:11yep so if i can i will and i'll put it on this background noise if i'm not watching anything

01:16but so i did catch uh more soccer than i thought i would over the weekend all told maybe an
01:22hour's worth
01:22okay um but no it doesn't it doesn't really it still doesn't appeal to me it's it's too slow
01:28of a game and and uh so no so i want i want this thing to be successful and i
01:34want people to care
01:34but we're not going to force it down your throat but to have us win a 4-1 game is
01:39better than
01:39some of the results we've seen in other games uh yesterday it was exciting because there were some
01:45surprise results i mean spain's supposed to win this whole thing and they tied capa verde 0-0
01:53and the capa verde goal or cape verde goalie was out of his mind they fired 27 shots at him
02:00now not all
02:01of them were on goal and and you know in some punch aways that might not have been on net
02:05but
02:05he was out of his mind to make that really interesting but um i you know i'm i'm not again

02:13force it down your throat i'll be intrigued if you get to go back and uh if you do go

02:19watch a game against australia friday afternoon yeah i might um you know if i'm around watching
02:25tv i i don't it's not appointment viewing for me but i'm not against it where i'm absolutely not
02:30going to watch it it's just you're not as hostile i'm not hostile we got a text yesterday from a
02:35listener that said the people that hate soccer are very proud that they hate soccer and you know i
02:42watched i went i told you i went to that friendly where there were 70 000 people there that were
02:46loving every second of it i watched in a bar kang that was your idea that you thought soccer might
02:51be a better bar viewing experience i watched at connor o'neill's in ann arbor the place was
02:55packed and everybody was going crazy it was really it was way more fun than watching at home yeah i
03:01think it's uh i think it'd be a great bar sport to watch um and like i said i did

03:07of it i don't know if if paraguay is terrible or if the united states played awfully well i mean
03:13everybody seemed to say we're supposed to win i caught like 30 seconds of commentary afterwards
03:17and alexei lawless was like this is the best i've ever seen this team play and okay good to know
03:23well based upon previous results um it feels like they either overachieved or paraguay played terrible
03:29i know their keeper had an incredible wingspan um and i thought i found a really cool fact that i
03:35thought you'd like his dad was a keeper and his name his nickname was gato oh cat yes so apparently
03:44this guy is named gatito son of the cat it's kitten oh so that's his nickname oh no i might

03:52that wrong but it's that's and i immediately regret it um the other thing i want to get caught up

04:01is your reaction to the news that jay bat was leaving michigan state yesterday well this has
04:08been in the works for for weeks if not i think i first heard the rumor of this uh it
04:12feels like a
04:13month ago um that this was going to be the case if guskowitz was going to be on the way
04:17out the
04:17president of the michigan state the rumors were he was going to leave and that that would open the
04:22door for jay bat to leave um then guskowitz announced he was going to go to clemson although
04:27i guess technically it hasn't happened yet but but bat was going to leave and and everybody said
04:32from what i've read about thought that he would just waiting for an opportunity to get back to the sec
04:38initially i thought well this this can't be good you know it's another change with michigan state and
04:44you know this is a guy who i thought was helping to get the transition from michigan state into the
04:49right place and but more i've read about this and then you're seeing uh reaction from izzo and from
04:56others maybe it's not the worst thing in the world it the jay bat is leaving um the the impression

05:03got from reading some stuff on spartan mag from jim copperoni who covers michigan state athletics
05:08is that people in the room weren't all that upset that jay bat would leave if this was inevitable he
05:15was
05:15going to do it anyway then better do it early than later right go ahead and go and then it
05:20opens up
05:20anytime you talk about athletic directors at michigan state the mark hollis conversation comes up mark
05:28hollis was outstanding as an athletic director at michigan state unfortunately his tenure ended with
05:35the the nasser scandal that really had almost nothing to do with with mark hollis but he kind of fell
05:42on
05:42the sword and walked down on his own terms and and that was the case back whatever it was uh
05:49eight
05:49years ago and ended up hooking up with with rocket and and uh becomes their one of their marketing
05:57directors specific with it with the golf tournament and it it tied in brilliantly yesterday because mark
06:03hollis is up there yesterday at the media event and and he's talking with the media so did you talk
06:08to
06:08him i didn't get a chance to talk to him too much but i i saw i was talking with
06:12brad galley and brad
06:13galley had talked with him and uh larry lage of the uh the associate press had talked with him and
06:17i saw
06:17the videos and all that and i was hoping that they were going to ask him about the michigan state
06:22situation and much to my joy it seems like mark hollis is not opposed to coming back to michigan
06:32state in fact he he's he'd welcome the conversation right now maybe you couldn't have said that a couple
06:37years ago but now he's in a place where yeah he he loves michigan state loves the university um
06:44his best friend is tom iso or one of his best friends is tom iso and the working relationship
06:50that they had was very successful with the football program and the basketball program
06:55uh specifically we know what the hockey program is going really well right now as well
07:01the thought that he could come back to michigan state would be great to me but it would come at
07:06a
07:06cost because it's going to dredge up all the the nasser stuff again which again i think is unfair
07:11uh for him but would he want to go through all that and he knows it like he knows that
07:18that's going to
07:18be brought up if he does so i thought it was interesting that what he said yesterday was
07:23he he's open to the conversation he'd like to have the conversation so we'll see where this goes
07:28for michigan state as far as jay bat don't let the door hit you you want out get out go

07:33the reaction i've seen people more upset about guskowitz than they are the president leaving
07:38than the athletic director yeah because guskowitz is leaving because of a disagreement or not being
07:43able to get along with the board of trustees with with the two or three members of the board of
07:48trustees that are really creating some issues um he's trying to get everybody on the same page and
07:54and some of these trustees don't appear that that's what they want to do um so losing him hurts
08:00and i'll defer to tom iso when tom iso says he doesn't like the guskowitz is leaving okay i'll
08:05agree with you i that i don't like it so i don't know when they're going to hire a new
08:11president how
08:12long that's going to take who the interim president's going to be when that announcement comes down i don't
08:17know it's a it's a bit of a mess at michigan state right now but i don't think that they
08:22should
08:23be without somebody of substance as an athletic director for too long well one of the consistent
08:28things we talk about and seem to be is how do you make the best of a bad situation and
08:32you know
08:33maybe they can find the right people that just put a rudder down put an anchor down and and quit
08:39the
08:39boat rocking and which is what i've asked for um kyle whittingham to do just put a rudder down and
08:46uh
08:47but yeah i mean if you can if it makes you look long and hard and make sure that the
08:53next appointments
08:54are long-term appointments because the one thing that presidents athletic directors they come in
09:00and they start initiatives and then they bolt before they ever see them come to fruition that
09:04it feels like you know that's bogue right right and the big new michigan state right now is getting
09:11the spartan ventures nil thing going and uh the guy who heads that up seems like he's really encouraged
09:17to uh get some more freedom to to get that thing rolling the way that he wants it to uh
09:23with with
09:24uh jay bat out of the picture here so we'll see how that develops i mean that's that's the next
