Michigan swept the season series with the Michigan State Spartans, have they closed the gap?
Transcript
00:32They'll take a backseat
00:33to nobody, John. Not even the team
00:35that beat them twice this year and won the Big Ten title.
00:39Tom Izzo not happy after
00:41his Spartans fell at the Chrysler Center yesterday.
00:44It was a good game.
00:45It was a fun game.
00:47It was a good game.
00:48It was competitive
00:50all the way to the end.
00:52I think I saw a graphic
00:54until Michigan started making their free throws
00:56at the end.
00:58There were five or six lead changes
01:00in the second half. The biggest lead
01:02by Michigan was nine. The biggest lead by Michigan
01:04State was six. I mean, it was back
01:06and forth. Yeah, early there were
01:08some clutching and grabbing, mucking it up
01:10as they said on the broadcast. But the second half
01:12things start opening up.
01:13The axle with the dunk and then Carr in the very next
01:16possession throwing it down like they were trading
01:18haymakers.
01:19It was a good basketball game between
01:21two good basketball teams, but the better
01:24team emphatically for the second
01:26time this year leaving no doubt
01:27is Michigan yet. Tom Izzo
01:30afterwards is complaining about a hundred
01:32free throws and
01:34we'll take a backseat to nobody
01:36and I'm not sure what game they watched.
01:38They watched the game where you lost.
01:40He sounds like a sore loser.
01:44I don't know why he brought up the little
01:46brother in the in the postgame press conference
01:48because when
01:50you lose, especially when
01:52you lose in your opponent's arena,
01:55the students, the fans
01:57are going to be
01:58shouting a lot of things that you
02:00don't like and you don't always bring
02:02it up. Right. Like, do I
02:04think Tom Izzo's career
02:06suggests he's the little brother in
02:08this rivalry? Absolutely not. His program
02:10is not. And and here's
02:12the other thing in terms of of
02:14his comments. I took it more as
02:16hey, we're never going to back down
02:18and I would never expect
02:20them to back down and just
02:22say, well, you know, we can no longer compete with Michigan.
02:24No, but at the same time, what are we doing
02:26bitching about officiating?
02:27Do you think that game was decided by
02:29officiating? No, I actually
02:30anything. I feel like, yeah, fears
02:32got called for his, but Mara got called for a couple
02:34dirty plays, too. I don't think that game was
02:36poorly officiated and it goes back to the
02:38first meeting in the Breslin
02:40where Izzo says they were the better team.
02:42I guess
02:45again, to me
02:46it's he's never going to back down
02:48nor should he
02:49and I don't know. I don't want to
02:51I want to defend his comments in
02:54that regard
02:56again. I don't know why if
02:58he doesn't bring up the little brother
02:59comment
03:01we're not talking about that at all
03:03this morning because you and I
03:04weren't there
03:05there. It's a small
03:06no one even knew what happened
03:08until he went to his
03:10postgame presser. Could I venture a theory
03:12you know why he brought it up
03:14because it got to him
03:15not because he thinks he's a little brother
03:17but he sees the tide turning
03:19Dusty May in two seasons
03:21has closed the gap
03:23in two seasons
03:24Dusty May is
03:2556 and 12
03:27Izzo's 55 and 13
03:29one game difference
03:30but 2-0 head up
03:32and Big Ten champs
03:34Dusty hasn't come in here and
03:36taken a three or four year approach
03:38to right the ship and get the program going
03:40he's done it in two seasons
03:41he's better
03:42they're better than you
03:43in two seasons
03:44and they're willing to do stuff
03:45you're not willing to do
03:46Yaxel
03:47was a portal guy
03:48he's the best player on the floor
03:51MSU's got
03:51billionaire with B
03:53donors
03:53plural with an S
03:55Ishbia and Magic Johnson
03:57are two very public ones
03:58but they have lots of money
04:00in their alumni base
04:01and Tom Izzo
04:01could certainly tap into it
04:03with some phone calls
04:04they could have
04:05been more competitive
04:06in the portal
04:08Michigan was
04:10is that part of it
04:11that it's Michigan
04:12and the portal
04:13and I hate Dusty
04:14and how Dusty's doing it
04:15and how dare they call me
04:15little brother
04:16you know how Izzo gets
04:18and he becomes very agitated
04:20I think it's because
04:21there's some truth to the idea
04:22he's concerned about
04:23what Michigan's been able to do
04:25in such a short time
04:26I think there's also
04:27some anger about
04:28the new business
04:28of college basketball
04:29and you just outlined it
04:30it's Dusty May has come in
04:32and in year one
04:33they went to the portal
04:34but it wasn't good enough
04:35to be able to compete
04:36with Michigan State
04:37Michigan State won the Big Ten
04:38last year
04:39but this year
04:42they doubled down
04:43on the portal
04:44they went and got
04:44the best player available
04:46in the portal
04:46they went and added
04:47a number of really good
04:48players in the portal
04:49and it's not that
04:51Tom Izzo hasn't used
04:52the portal
04:53he just hasn't used it
04:54to the same lengths
04:56that other programs have
04:57do you think Tom Izzo
04:58at MSU will ever have
04:59his best player
05:01be a portal player
05:02and I'll go a step further
05:03his best two
05:04three or even four players
05:05be portal players
05:06the way that Dusty May does
05:09you could say
05:09it's not sustainable
05:10year in and year out
05:11for Dusty
05:11but Dusty's also got
05:12a top 10 recruiting class
05:14coming in right now
05:15from the freshman class
05:16and by the way
05:17he also recruited
05:19McKinney
05:20who was really good
05:21in that game yesterday
05:21big threes
05:22and Kaysen
05:23who of course
05:23it sucks what happened
05:24he's got the ACL
05:25but they've recruited
05:26freshmen well
05:27but the way for them
05:28to speed this up
05:29was to use the portal
05:31and if you want to
05:32call them mercenaries
05:33I'm just going to tell you
05:34spending doesn't
05:35automatically equal winning
05:36Kentucky spent
05:37they were ninth
05:38in the SEC
05:39Louisville was a big
05:41portal winner
05:41sixth in the ACC
05:44I just feel like
05:45it becomes
05:46a lot of pettiness
05:47from Spartan fans
05:48specifically who say
05:49I'm not impressed
05:50with what Dusty's done
05:51Izzo doesn't have to
05:52respect what they've done
05:53you should
05:53you better
05:55I'm not going to say
05:57that it never happens
05:58because I have
05:59a tremendous amount
06:00of respect
06:01for Coach Izzo
06:02and if he is
06:05going to compete
06:06in the modern era
06:09with everyone else
06:10that is spending
06:11he's going to have
06:12to change
06:13I don't want to say
06:14change
06:14he's going to have
06:15to tweak
06:16how he goes
06:17about things
06:18he could still
06:19recruit high level
06:21players
06:21and develop them
06:23but you've got to
06:24be able to compliment
06:25through the portal
06:27more so than he has
06:29and if one of them
06:29is going to be
06:30your best player
06:32or your two best
06:33players on the team
06:34are portal players
06:35I think the bigger
06:37issue is because
06:38of his style
06:39of coaching
06:40it takes
06:42two or three years
06:43for some players
06:44to adjust to it
06:46and continue to
06:47accept his style
06:48of coaching
06:49whether it's at
06:49practice or it's
06:50in games
06:52I mean Michigan's
06:53best player is
06:54Yaxel
06:54UAB
06:55their second best
06:56player is Johnson
06:57Illinois
06:57depending on the
06:59night Mara
07:00UCLA
07:00Cadeau
07:01UNC
07:03I mean it
07:04it flipped things
07:05in a hurry
07:07text coming in
07:09Izzo and the
07:09entire fan base
07:10complain about
07:11the refs
07:11they are losers
07:13complaining about
07:14free throws
07:15when they went
07:15full hack-a-shack
07:16with five minutes
07:17left
07:17Michigan shot
07:1810 more free
07:19throws in the
07:19final minute or
07:20two
07:20yeah up until
07:22that point
07:22they were pretty
07:22equal
07:23I don't know
07:24about this
07:24double standard
07:25that Izzo
07:25seems to believe
07:26exists
07:28but we have
07:28two different
07:29Izzo cuts
07:30we can play
07:30the one where
07:31he's defending
07:31fears
07:32we could play
07:33the one where
07:33he sounds like
07:34a grumpy old
07:34man
07:36well let's
07:36let's go grumpy
07:37old man first
07:38all right
07:38perfect
07:47you
07:51you
07:52you
07:52you
08:01you
08:02you
08:03you
08:03you
08:04you
08:04you
08:40On fierce and officiating and his star point guard kicking somebody in the groin again.
10:27It is a physical sport.
10:30And it was in this game, I thought it was called pretty equally.
10:35You got Morrow with two flagrants and technicals.
10:38Earned them both, dirty plays.
10:39Yeah.
10:40And my question is, why is, when he says, you know, it was just a reaction, like, why is his
10:49reaction to always kick a guy in the groin?
10:52Yeah.
10:52I don't think he did it on purpose.
10:53It's an unnatural movement.
10:55Why does it always seem to be that with him?
10:59Why would he get the benefit of the doubt?
11:01I know he wants to make a big deal of, well, he was called out publicly.
11:03For good reason, Tom.
11:06Not, not, this wasn't AI generated images that CBS had ready to queue up.
11:10They were there because he did these things.
11:13It does nothing to help them win games.
11:18Nope.
11:19And he is a hell of a player.
11:21Yeah.
11:21And I do agree with, he played his ass off.
11:23He's played his ass off all season long.
11:25Including the first meeting too.
11:26He's a hell of a point guard.
11:29But you can't defend the indefensible.
11:32And the idea, well, their guy did it too.
11:35Is Dusty coming out and defending Mara, pushing guys after plays?
11:38I didn't hear that.
11:39Grabbing guys.
11:40I didn't see it.
11:40If he did, I'd rip Dusty for doing that too.
11:42You can't defend the indefensible.
11:46248-539-9797.
11:47We got phone calls to get to.
11:49We got plenty of texts to read.
11:50It's 97-1.
