Diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war are gaining fresh attention as President Donald Trump’s representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The closed-door meeting at the Kremlin lasted around three hours, with both sides discussing the possibility of moving negotiations forward. Putin acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but said continued communication was useful and thanked Trump for his efforts to pursue peace.

The talks came after Russia and Ukraine agreed to temporarily halt strikes on each other’s capitals for three days. Witkoff and Kushner are also expected to travel to Kyiv for their first talks in Ukraine’s capital, where they will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, major obstacles remain. Russia continues to demand attention to what it calls the root causes of the conflict, while disagreements over territory and security guarantees remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, fighting has continued, with both countries carrying out aerial attacks. Despite the diplomatic activity, there is still no confirmed ceasefire or peace agreement, making the upcoming Kyiv discussions particularly significant.
