00:37You had to be a little bit surprised that it was just such a quiet morning in Australia
00:43for Miles Garrett in game one with the Rams.
00:48Yes and no. And when you say no, what do you mean no?
00:51Yeah.
00:52Kyle Shanahan's whole game plan was to make sure Miles Garrett wasn't involved.
00:56They ran it right at him a lot.
00:58They threw a ton of screens.
01:00Kyle Shanahan said going in the game that he really liked where their screen game was at.
01:03So the game was designed.
01:05There were not a ton of deep dropbacks.
01:07Now, there were some, including on the one-inch line where they did one and picked up 14 yards
01:13on the swing pass out to Luke Farrell.
01:15But for the most part, that was kind of the game plan.
01:18Now, Miles said afterwards, obviously, his knee was bothering him.
01:22It was surprising.
01:23I thought, obviously, you know, he wanted to go out there in the first game with the Rams
01:26and make a big impact.
01:27And that did not happen.
01:28Quite frankly, the 49ers really put it on them.
01:31And I'm sure there's going to be so many debates about travel now.
01:34The next thing that goes to Australia, they might go for two weeks.
01:36Who knows?
01:36But they're certainly not going to be going the night before like the Rams is.
01:40You know what?
01:40I actually think they might, Nathan, if they're the Rams.
01:43I feel like this, in the end, I thought the leaked story about the 15 staffers, I thought
01:49it was BS.
01:49I thought they were just having fun.
01:51I think they treated that like a preseason game.
01:52Honestly, I'm surprised Miles made the trip, given his injury situation and the fact that
01:58Aaron Donald obviously didn't go.

02:00It just didn't seem to me like they were all in on that game to begin with.
02:04Well, that's a pretty, and that's a heck of a lot of belief in yourself.
02:09That's a division game.
02:10That is the 49ers.
02:11That's not like they were going out there and playing, you know, the Saints.
02:15That's not a shot at the Saints, just that that's not a division game.
02:19Not only that, that was technically a home game for the Rams.
02:22So the Rams, when they play the Niners again, have to play them in San Francisco.
02:26If that was their mentality, that is arrogance in the National Football League on a level that
02:31would be stunning to me.
02:33I think they believe that they were doing it the right way.
02:35I do not think that they, absolutely not that they took that as a preseason game.
02:39That's the Niners.
02:40That's a division game.
02:40That has too much.
02:41They say it counts as a double.
02:42That's too much to just take off.
02:44And it was a home game for them, technically.
02:46Is this any sort of a, like if the season doesn't go well for one of these teams,
02:51I'm assuming the Rams after things happen.
02:53Does the NFL rethink its strategy about the game so far away?
02:58No, no.
02:59First of all, it was awesome.
03:01Obviously, I have good friends in Australia, the great Ben Dobbin, the foremost caller,
03:06the Jim Nance of Rugby League over there.
03:09He, it was just beautiful to see Melbourne on display.
03:13And they got a perfect day.
03:14Because remember, they're really kind of just coming out of winter there.
03:18And they got a perfect day.
03:19I thought it was beautiful.
03:20I will say I felt bad because it's, you know, the shape of the stadium.
03:24The people in the front row at the 50R line probably needed binoculars to see the game,
03:29which was wild how far away they were from the action.
03:32But I thought it was beautiful.
03:33It was awesome.
03:34Over 100,000 people.
03:35Great spectacle.
03:36It felt like you were watching something special to me.
03:38You know, it being nighttime here, being daytime there, it felt like almost you're watching
03:42the Olympics or something of that magnitude happening internationally.
03:45So I thought it was very cool.
03:46And no, I do not think that they will rethink that at all.
03:49Yeah, it seems that some people just decided to tune in just to make sure that they could
03:52see an NFL game and what it looked like in Australia.
03:55Amazing that somebody would think a way like that.
03:58I happen to remember somebody making that point on the air here yesterday.
04:02I guess I'll say champions pose on that one.

04:12We've got to focus on them.
04:14I have taken the Browns in this game.
04:16I have picked football reasons.
04:18Not just trying to be a homer here.
04:20I'm getting smoked online, man.
04:22I am getting smoked online.
04:24And I'm not mad at anybody, but I'm like, guys, for the love of God, I'm not saying that
04:28they're going to win the Super Bowl.
04:29I'm saying that they can win week one, that I'm picking them to win week one.
04:33And I'm getting a lot of pushback on that.
04:35Nathan, it's your job to find ways to win.
04:37How do they win on Sunday?
04:40Yeah, I do think they can win this game.
04:41I mean, the Jags are a very good football team.
04:44They won 13 games a year ago.
04:45They won their last eight games.
04:47Trevor Lawrence in that stretch at a stretch that really only two quarterbacks in NFL
04:51history have had.
04:52And those would be Lamar Jackson in his MVP season, his first MVP season, and Cam Newton
04:57in his MVP season, where over the last games, Trevor Lawrence threw for 19 touchdowns.
05:02He ran for five.
05:03So he played very well.
05:05Look, the Jags do not have an established ground game.
05:09They moved on from ETN.
05:10They think that with facial tootin, that they have an opportunity to get that going.
05:14And then Chris Rodriguez, who played for Liam Cohen at Kentucky, they brought him in.
05:18So they don't have a great ground game.
05:19And when you can get to Trevor Lawrence, pressure certainly can burst his pipes.
05:24Now, the Browns are 2-0 all time against Trevor Lawrence.
05:26He's thrown three picks in those two games.
05:28The Browns sacked him four times in each of those games.
05:30Let's not forget, the last game that Deshaun Watson won as a starter for the Cleveland Browns
05:34was down in Jacksonville.
05:36He is 7-0, 7-0 in his career as a starter against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
05:40I think that the path is twofold.
05:42Number one, on offense, limit the explosives and get after Trevor Lawrence.
05:47Stop the run game, make them one-dimensional, and go ahead and get after Trevor Lawrence
05:51and try to get him to make a couple of those errant throws.
05:53They've got very good receivers.
05:54I think a critical matchup in this game for the Browns is going to be Parker Washington
05:58in the slot for Jacksonville against Miles Harden in the slot for the Browns.
06:02Last year, Parker Washington, over the last three weeks, had more receiving yards than anybody
06:06in the AFC, had over 100 yards in three of his last four, including the playoffs.
06:10He's been the best player in their camp.
06:12A lot of people think he is the go-to guy.
06:13So that is going to be, I think, a critical matchup.
06:15And then when the Browns have the ball, you know, the Jags are a good run defense.
06:19They are not a great pass defense.
06:20They're not a great third-down defense.
06:22But what they were last year is opportunistic.
06:25They had 22 interceptions, second most in the NFL, 31 total takeaways.
06:29They had a plus 13 differential there, one of the best in the NFL.
06:32Well, the Browns have got to take care of the football.
06:35That's obvious.
06:36But beyond that, the good news is those types of stats, year over year, tend to regress to the mean.
06:42So if the Browns take care of it, and Sean Watson's going to have to be patient,
06:45this is Anthony Cappanelli, the defensive coordinator there.
06:48It comes from the Vic Fangio School, uses a lot of that cover six, cover eight,
06:52the mixed field coverages, by the way, which most of the interceptions so far this year
06:55have been thrown on a cover six or a cover eight look.
06:58But when they go too high, the Browns have got with this new offensive line.
07:02They have got to be able to run them out of some of those too high looks.
07:05That's when you can take the shots down the field.
07:07Now, they're going to be too high the majority of the game.
07:09They're going to play zone the majority of the game.
07:11But if we can force them either formationally or personnel-wise into some man looks
07:16in certain situations, I think we really do have an advantage.
07:19Their corners are not great man corners.
07:21Their safeties really are not necessarily great safeties.
07:24They didn't, despite all those interceptions, they didn't set anybody to throw ball
07:26on the back end of their defense.
07:27So I do think if the Browns can run them out of some of those shell looks or be patient
07:32and get good yak after short catches against some of those shell looks, I think the Browns
07:37have an opportunity to really attack this football team down the field.
07:39And then it'll be incumbent upon Deshaun Watson when these opportunities present themselves.
07:43So just go ahead and rip it.
07:45Just go have fun.
07:46You know, I know that you'd rather have him throw for 300 with two picks than throw for 150
07:52and not be able to score and not put points on the board.
07:54So that's got to be his mindset.
07:56And if he does that, I really do think the Browns have an opportunity to win this game.

08:02I know that the previous coaching administration, they were not exactly thrilled to put Deshaun
08:10Watson in RPO situations.
08:12Kind of seemed like they were protecting him.
08:14Is that out the window now at this stage of his career?
08:17And Todd Munkin, are we going to see a lot of that as an actual weapon that defenses
08:22have to game plan against?
08:24I don't know if you're going to see a lot of it.
08:25I mean, he's not Lamar Jackson, right?
08:27But will that be a part of what we do on offense?
08:29Absolutely.
08:30And yes, if you can pick up, you know, seven yards, eight yards, pick up a first down here
08:34or there with it, or pick up, you know, get yourself in a good second and short with that.
08:38Absolutely.
08:39That will be a part of the game.
08:40I think that you'll have situations where you'll have both Quinn John Jenkins and Dylan
08:43Samson out there, and you'll have options to, you know, give an inside handoff.
08:47You'll have an option for him to keep it.
08:48If the Red Seas part, you'll have an option to throw it out on the swing path.
08:51So yes, there will be RPOs in this game.
08:54There will be RPOs for Deshaun Watson.
08:55They will utilize his legs at times, but I don't want people to think that this is going
08:59to be, oh, we're just bringing over what we did with Lamar Jackson for Deshaun Watson
09:03because they're very different players.

09:22You know, a lot of people trusted Jim Schwartz before.
09:25He's not here anymore.
09:26Mike Rutenberg is here, and there's been a lot of cynicism, a lot of skepticism.
09:30How confident are you in this defense?
09:33No Myles Garrett, but Jared Verse, but with a new defensive coordinator.
09:39I'm very confident, and until I'm shown otherwise, I will remain confident.
09:44I think that we're still a very good defense.
09:46The way the front seven plays is basically going to be the same, and the way we play
09:50on the back end, you know, for the large part, it's going to be the same.
09:54The biggest difference that Mike Rutenberg is going to bring from a scheme standpoint
09:58is Jim Schwartz was, hey, we're going to go single high, play cover one.
10:02You know it's coming.
10:03We know it's coming, and we're just so good at it, it doesn't matter.
10:08Now, that is still true, I think, especially on the outside with Denzel Ward and Tyson
10:11Campbell, but what Mike Rutenberg is going to bring from being around Jeff Ulbrich down
10:16in Atlanta last year, and that was, by the way, a secondary that was right up there with
10:20the Jags in terms of interceptions, one of the best defenses against the pass, as we're
10:25going to see, for the first time with the Browns, a lot more post-snap, pre-post-snap
10:30disguise, pre-post-snap rotation, things designed to make the quarterback hold the ball a beat
10:35longer.
10:36The days of a team coming into the Browns and saying, for example, Liam Cohen saying,
10:41all right, our game plan starts today with how do we not let Miles Garrett wreck this
10:44game?
10:44Those days are over, but Jared versus there.
10:47The Browns feel like they have some good post-rushers on the interiors.
10:50Malik Collins back.
10:50They think Mason Graham's going to get to the quarterback.
10:52They like what Mike Hall has brought to the team.
10:54You bring in Derek Barnett, who's had five sacks the last two seasons.
10:57So you're going to have to manufacture.
10:58There's going to have to be some more pressures to come along with just rushing forward, playing
11:02seven in coverage, but they feel very confident in those disguises, the switches from two high
11:07down to single high, showing single high, and then flipping who's actually the robber and
11:10who's the post-safety.
11:11Those rotations, that communication, something they've worked very, very hard on, and that will
11:16be what's new.
11:17Could that lead to some best in the season?
11:20Yes.
11:20Do we hope it does?
11:21Absolutely not, but I have a lot of confidence in Mike Grudenberg.
11:24The team has a lot of confidence in Mike Grudenberg, and I still think this defense, while I believe
11:28there are questions of depth at the second and third level, specifically linebacker in
11:33the quarterback room, I do think our starters are very, very good, and I expect this defense
11:38to play well on Sunday in Jacksonville.
