Transcript
00:00hello chad tracy good morning morning how you doing i uh bats needed to get going last night
00:07but you got a chance to go out and uh win this series tonight you gotta win a series that's
00:14what it's all about i'm doing fine how are you doing good um i wanted to ask you a little
00:19bit
00:19about return of roman anthony and uh jaron duran and how you manage that going forward when it
00:26comes to roman dh-ing roman getting an opportunity to to get out there like you did last night play
00:33left field gotcha i mean i'm literally asking that yeah how do you manage that going forward
00:41oh are you are we on yeah oh chad we're on what's happening right now i didn't hear the ding
00:47yeah
00:47yeah yeah yeah we got full ding we're full we are luckily i mean imagine the things you could have
00:52said there well i well you didn't know no i was just waiting because i didn't hear the ding and
00:57i was like that's funny um uh no so uh broadly to that it's it's hard to say right now
01:06i think um
01:07you know obviously with right-handed pitching we're using jaron uh you know pretty frequently
01:12out there in left field and mickey uh dh's or mickey plays first base things change as you get people
01:19back you know you have to we first of all have to get healthy uh we got to get wilson
01:24back we got
01:24to get rafa back um in the in the midst of that got to make sure nobody else gets banged
01:29up uh and
01:30then you kind of figure out from there what are the pieces we have in front of us and how
01:34do we make
01:34this work the best and and make sure we keep hot bats in there so um it's really hard to
01:39say you
01:40know because between now and like next week you know are we going to have everybody healthy and back
01:44is anybody else going to be banged up um and that'll that question will answer itself easier at that
01:49point if that makes sense chad when it comes to adley rushman before last night we've seen him
01:54be pretty phenomenal that elbow doesn't really seem to be a massive issue moving forward how do you
02:00guys manage that uh every single night well i mean over the course of the last couple of weeks
02:06it's been what you've seen um a lot of that by design on um it's there right like it was
02:13it was
02:13it's getting better but it's there it's something that you know if he gets a really aggressive swing
02:18and that that elbow kind of hyper extends it can kind of symptoms can pop up although they've been
02:23getting better um that's why a lot of the the off days are like the play and then you see
02:28him maybe
02:28out for a couple of days and you're managing and you're kind of look picking through the calendar and
02:32trying to deal with that um to try to do your very best to make sure that he's in a
02:37good place
02:38um and in the meantime if if you if you manage it that way that hopefully as you you know
02:44trickle
02:44down the calendar that you slowly make it less and less of a problem um so obviously he's doing he's
02:49in a much better spot right now than he was you know 10 days ago which is the goal chad
02:54you guys
02:54have had an absolute amazing turnaround um but it's human nature and we've had this conversation about
03:01the interim tag being taken off your name as the manager and being the full-time manager players do
03:07deal with it when it's about new contracts and i know everybody says well i'm not thinking about
03:12that is that something that maybe you and your agent have talked about are you having conversations
03:17with red socks organization about potentially you know becoming the full-time manager
03:25um we haven't gotten deep into it there's been there's been some definite like little
03:29um back and forth conversations nothing nothing too deep at all um and i think a lot of that's designed
03:37around keeping the focus on the field at least it is for me um you know we're we're approaching the
03:42last 16 games of the season we've obviously you know it's been a great turnaround we have to finish
03:47the job like um there's just so much to think about on a daily basis uh and it really is
03:53from the moment
03:53you wake up and you start thinking about the game then you do your game planning and then you talk
03:57after the game about you know do we need any moves how's our and this and then you go home
04:01and
04:01you're focused on the next one so um for for me and somebody in my position my my focus has
04:07to be
04:08there um on our guys on our players and you know and i've told you guys a lot like right
04:13now it's
04:14not how do we win tonight's game that's it nothing beyond that like you know what do we got to
04:18do to
04:18win tonight's game um and and if that other stuff you know happens to develop and then great but like
04:24for me it has to remain that way i'm sure you're happy with your guy but you should reach out
04:29and
04:29talk to the agent for christian gonzalez what happened to talk to gonzalez's agent he got him
04:37102 million in guaranteed money oh yeah
04:43chad last night i would imagine if i end up back here i'm not going to be making 102 million
04:48dollars
04:48don't sell yourself short that's what drake makes
04:53chad last night sandoval called his outing unacceptable then you came out and said that
04:57you were actually pleased with it where does that contrast come from
05:03no flip that reverse it i said i was pleased with the strike throwing first and then after he he
05:08was
05:08upset with himself which is totally understandable um uh upset with himself he and sandy knows the
05:15mission right now it's where we're trying to go out and win as many ballgames as we can
05:18um and so from my perspective as a manager you're you're always looking to to drive and find the
05:26positives um comparatively speaking from that outing last night to the one before
05:33my point there is i'd much rather see a starting pitcher go out and throw six innings and 70 percent
05:38strikes the outing before and i think even sandy had said the outing before like i can't do anything
05:43until i prove i can throw strikes i think he was 80 pitches 40 strikes the outing before
05:47those are to me you know from a process and the coaches are always looking at process
05:52what's the process what's the process um you know 80 pitches 40 strikes that to me is unacceptable
05:59um 70 strikes getting in the zone flooding the zone you give yourself a chance so um is he happy
06:06with
06:07the outing like and of course pitchers you know they want to go out there and win you know um
06:12but
06:12from a standpoint of one outing to the next like you can look at one and say that doesn't give
06:17us
06:17much of a chance you know and then look at another one and say that actually gives us a chance
06:21if we're
06:21going to be in the zone 70 percent of the time and um you know a couple things go differently
06:25it
06:25might be six innings two runs ultimately last night you know it's also uh you know on all of us
06:30it's the responsibility on the offense to score which we were having trouble doing against detmer so
06:34um i understand completely as a competitor where he's coming from um but that's the sequence there
06:42when you were 10 and 17 and you came in as the manager of this team you just talked about
06:48process
06:48could you envision the process by which you'd get this 80 wins with about 15 games left in the regular
06:55season um i think we could envision you're not envision is not the right word i think we had a
07:03pretty
07:03clear understanding at least as i watched the first uh couple of weeks a pretty clear understanding
07:11of like things that needed to get better quickly um you know so i uh did i did you envision
07:18you know
07:20uh the you know how abruptly it happened and then how like abruptly it happened and then like how many
07:26games we won in such a short period of time like no i don't think anybody was like we're gonna
07:31you know
07:31we're gonna win 15 in a row and you know 30 out of 34 or whatever it was but we
07:36did have a pretty
07:37good idea as you watched it and then you kind of looked at the beginning of the season then we
07:40got
07:40to we got our staff we kind of watched it for a couple weeks and you did have an understanding
07:45of
07:45like these are pretty clearly the things we need to attack you know mainly uh a lot of the stuff
07:50on
07:50the offensive side i mean but 70 and 49 that's got to be i mean in that span is that
07:54the best record in
07:55baseball i'm not sure i'm sure it's right i'm sure it's up there i'm not sure i mean if that's
08:03true
08:04i mean that's a good feather in the cap so yeah it's been it's been very good it's only worried
08:11about tonight curtis i'm the opposite i'd be like i'm not managing until i get that deal
08:17speaking of managing no it's been it's been very good it's been a very obviously that that record when
08:22you when you think about that it's been very good for a long period of time i think i i
08:26told you
08:26guys i remember i think maybe in kansas city i uh did a call with you guys and said at
08:32some point
08:32we're gonna have to go on a run and not just like a week-long run i said i believe
08:36it was something
08:36like that and we're gonna have to go on a run and have it for an extended period of time
08:41that was the
08:42position we had got into at a certain point where as the calendar kept turning um and kept getting
08:49deeper like this is going to need to be a run of like a month month and a half we
08:54played very
08:55consistent good baseball in order to make to get ourselves in a better position so we we did that
09:00uh to the extreme do you think the organization is waiting to sort of legitimize what you've done
09:04for the postseason that they're waiting to see what you do in those games
09:09oh i don't know i think i i think the i think the relationships uh that i have with everybody
09:16within
09:16the organization the front office are very very strong um and i and i don't i don't think
09:23that our people there look at anything in a sense of like you know let's see what happens in these
09:28two games to you know to decide whether this person's good or not so so i i don't know what's
09:34going to come of all that but i i know i don't think anybody's thinking that way uh as somebody
09:39who
09:39managed in the minors how cool is it to see somebody like my guy mickey gasper get a second
09:46chance with this team and do what he's done the the last three four weeks oh it's it's awesome um
09:55i i i was pretty vocal about that early on he obviously tapered off a bit you know that first
10:02stint we were giving him opportunities to he was catching you know and he was holding his own back there
10:06um and then uh obviously we we had to make the move romey had gotten healthy i think and you
10:13know
10:13the roster was kind of getting itself healthy and he went down and just plugged away at it again and
10:19i think if you look at the numbers uh when he this stint of like a month and a half
10:23or whatever it was
10:23that he went back down and he absolutely killed it in triple a again um which he's been doing for
10:28the
10:28last few seasons and um to come back up and actually this is i guess for me like this this
10:34stuff that
10:34that everybody's watching now um you know myself flo was with me for a while in 24 uh when or
10:42mickey
10:42was there with us people in the big leagues now the national audience is getting to see things that
10:47we saw uh him do in triple a and i know triple a is not the big leagues but you
10:51know nothing can
10:53happen unless you get opportunity right um so he he's given an opportunity and now he is kind of
10:59showcasing some things that so many people if you kind of made a lap around the international
11:03league and talk to opposing coaches and managers and brought up and just said mickey gasper and
11:07they're going to say that guy can really hit um a lot of them got a glimpse of him doing
11:12things like
11:12this so um very proud of him you know take him he's grabbed hold of an opportunity and he's running
11:17with it what is your preferred nickname for him nick just call him nick okay all right good to know
11:24very simple yeah chad when you look at i know it's you know you focus on the head and i'll
11:29be where
11:29your feet are at but obviously there's been some you know reports out there of possibly garrett crochet
11:36and and maybe him being available if he is heading into the postseason what what does a player like
11:42that add to your team it depends if it's you know if he's fully healthy and and you're looking at
11:51like
11:51the garrett crochet that all of us on this call know and love and like have seen throw he adds
11:57a
11:57significant amount um you know so and i guess to be perfectly honest if he's not going to be
12:02you know that garrett crochet probably everybody would have reservations about like do you even
12:06put him out there so you got to see you know we i said yesterday we still have boxes to
12:11check
12:11yesterday was a good step as far as throwing another bullpen mixing in some different pitch
12:16types and he looked pretty good um i stood there and watched uh the duration of it it looked pretty
12:20good
12:22but you know you're talking about a a beast of a left-hander that you know can throw in in
12:27the
12:27upper 90s with with nasty stuff and and even if it's in a bullpen roll um you know and you
12:32you fire
12:33that that down there and find a lane to bring it in for a two-inning stint like that any
12:38team would
12:38take that not to mention uh not for nothing he has done it before you know the early part of
12:43his career
12:43he came out of the bullpen so it's not like the bullpen's foreign to him either he knows how to
12:46do that
12:47so um yeah i think if he's if he's healthy and gets through the remaining steps of this and and
12:54it looks like garrett like i think that would help uh anybody would be pretty pumped about that
12:59update on contreras before you go chad i'm doing a lot better yesterday he's he's progressing nicely
13:07we'll decide obviously he's eligible sometime this weekend he may go on uh a couple day rehab just to
13:12get himself uh back in the swing of being on the field but um yesterday he took a full load
13:17he did
13:17ground balls he hit on that he went out and took extended uh reps of batting practice on the field
13:22um he's been hitting off to jack he's been doing his running so everything is progressing uh nicely
13:27with wilson okay well great to talk to you thanks for joining us this morning go out and get him
13:33tonight and and win this series and we will talk to you again soon
13:36you
