00:00Well, Greg, our guy Bradfoe caught up with Wilson Contreras at the Midsummer Classic,
00:04and Wilson Contreras was asked about waiving his no-trade clause.
00:09We can hear from Wilson Contreras.
00:12You do have control over whether or not they could ever consider trading you.
00:17Would you refuse to be traded by the Red Sox if they approached you?
00:20They know the answer.
00:21Like, the front office knows the answers.
00:23I already spoke about it, but I don't think I'm interested in going that way.
00:29But just to clarify, you had a conversation with the front office about that,
00:33that you wouldn't waive into a trade clause?
00:35Yeah. I mean, I like Boston.
00:38I don't want to just leave because of the situation.
00:42I like Sali. I like challenges. I like the team.
00:44I love my guys. I love the teammates.
00:45They're great persons, so they're great people, and that's what I appreciate the most.
00:51And like I said, every day they show up to the clubhouse,
00:54they're willing to listen, they're willing to learn.
00:56And yeah, that's why I went ahead and said something.
01:01So you went to them?
01:03It was kind of like that.
01:05It was like that. It wasn't like us direct.
01:08Yeah.
01:08But they know that I love this place.
01:11See, I really like this for the city, for the team.
01:16There's a guy who actually is performing, who is a veteran, who likes playing here.
01:22And so I, you know, maybe the Red Sox don't like him going and saying,
01:28hey, you know, you're, you know, I don't, I'm not going to waive the clause
01:31and you're not going to have the flexibility, but don't you want him on this team?
01:35Like going forward?
01:36Yeah. I think he's a great guy for this, that clubhouse.
01:39I think we've seen that he's passionate.
01:40He plays with that edge and I think fans love him.
01:44Mega was concerned that he's a bit of a hothead.
01:46No, I like that he's a hothead.
01:48I just, I just am concerned.
01:49I don't want him in the comments sections.
01:51We've all fallen prey to it before.
01:54Don't get suspended over the comments section because you tell someone to come
01:57meet you outside Fenway Park, as funny as that was, in my opinion.
02:01But I like him being the one that's the leader rather than this feeling of like,
02:08oh, we can't have fans in the stands with paper bags on their heads
02:12or who are even from Yankees fans who are being annoying to somebody who's on the field.
02:19Like I'd rather have somebody who's kind of a hothead and not sensitive,
02:23if that makes sense.
02:24Yeah.
02:25I would say this means he's gone because that sounds a lot like Kyle Schwarber
02:28and John Lester and Mookie Betts and this ownership group hates guys
02:31that want to be here and perform.
02:34Like that's all I could think about was when Kyle Schwarber arrived
02:37and all of a sudden fell in love with Boston.
02:39Right.
02:39It was a clear guy that wanted to stay here.
02:40Wait, wait, what about Alex Bregman?
02:41Oh, Alex Bregman.
02:43Right.
02:43Bregman, we hate these guys.
02:45Get out of here.
02:45We want to keep Duran.
02:50I mean, it was interesting.
02:53We talked about it earlier, but yesterday,
02:55I think you were kind of spot on a little bit, Mago,
02:58when he talked about some of the guys that have come up
03:01and the way they have changed the vibe around the ballpark.
03:06And I think that's a little bit of a shot at Roman Anthony and Marcelo Meyer.
03:12And I don't know, or either or, maybe not both.
03:15I don't know.
03:16Guys, could things have gone any worse for Roman Anthony this summer with the Red Sox?
03:21No.
03:21Impossible.
03:22On top of the injury, there's now this weird non-explanation
03:27for why he's not allowed to be around the team
03:30during the team's best streak of the season.
03:32And on top of that, there was a huge miscommunication
03:34that made him look really bad.
03:36Right.
03:37And then people are always like, oh, he's out and about.
03:39He's in the city.
03:40And he seemed like, when we talked to him,
03:42he seemed like the nicest kid, that he was laser focused.
03:45He learned from Bregman.
03:46He was the first one in, last one out type of a guy.
03:50So, unassuming, all of it.
03:53Mike, you guys, I'm sorry if I missed this.
03:55Is this related to the Park City tabs and all this?
03:59Like that he's going out?
04:00Excuse me.
04:00That he's picking up tabs across the city?
04:03Maybe in Park City, Utah.
04:04Could be that too.
04:05I don't know where.
04:05I love Park City.
04:06I didn't know that Roman was picking up the tab there.
04:08That's the online speculation.
04:10Bankrupt him.
04:11Yeah.
04:11I mean, it seems like a lovely place.
04:14But, yeah.
04:15No, I think that there are some who, we talked about this,
04:19if you're hurt, then they think you ought to stay at home
04:24and you shouldn't be going out and having dinner.
04:27I mean, we talked about it with.
04:28Which you should.
04:29We talked about it with Breslau.
04:30And you would say yes.
04:31You would say yes.
04:33Stay out of the spotlight if you're hurt and you're not playing well.
04:35Because people are going to be like, wait a second.
04:37Especially when they anointed you the next Ted Williams.
04:41You know what I mean?
04:41Especially when everybody's expectation of you was to be the face of this team
04:47and you don't.
04:48And I get it.
04:49You're young.
04:50You want to go out.
04:51But my advice would be like, avoid the landmines.
04:53Because what's the benefit of you going out?
04:56There's nothing positive coming out of it.
04:58Everything that you do is going to be negative, negative, negative
05:02because you're injured.
05:04And if you're not performing well, I would say the same thing.
05:07So why put yourself in that position where people are going to be like,
05:11oh, he's not focused.
05:12He's not locked in.
05:14Isn't there a difference between going out and having dinner at Strega
05:18as opposed to being out and drinking somewhere?
05:23They don't see it that way.
05:25But I do think if he was just going out in the North End for dinner,
05:29I don't think that's the story.
05:32So if he's out and he's at Loco,
05:34or something, then it's a problem.
05:36If he's out late at night,
05:37if you go to dinner and you're home by 11,
05:39nobody's talking about it.
05:40I think this was something that there's a reason he's in Fort Myers,
05:42and it's not because the clubhouse is too small.
05:44Of course not.
05:45Yeah.
05:45That's crazy.
05:46And I think this also,
05:48if I'm reading into it too much, tell me, Greg,
05:50but Fort Myers is where you learn the game.
05:52That's where their instructional stuff goes down.
05:55Yeah.
05:55Like, maybe it's also a sign, like,
05:56you got a lot to learn, Bug.
05:58Like, get down there.
05:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:59Get away from the city.
06:00I think some of it,
06:01I think it's similar to Bayo a little bit,
06:03where they are slapping you on the wrist and saying,
06:06listen,
06:07you're going to go back down,
06:08and you can knock off the head trip that's going on.
06:13Right.
06:13Because you need a little dose of reality.
06:17I definitely think,
06:18I think in both cases,
06:20that's it.
06:21I mean,
06:21And that's what Cora was saying with Meyer.
06:23Yeah.
06:24In spring training.
06:25Meyer has the injury,
06:27like,
06:27has the forearm thing.
06:28So,
06:29I mean,
06:29Unless the Red Sox said to Roman Anthony,
06:32like,
06:33all right,
06:34because of the expectations that so many people put on you,
06:38everything you do is under a microscope,
06:41even if it's little things.
06:42So,
06:43here's what we're going to do.
06:44You are locked in.
06:45You're doing everything right.
06:46But what we're going to do is send you to Fort Myers,
06:48because this is what I said last week,
06:50is that out of sight,
06:52out of mind.
06:53Right.
06:53So,
06:54Florida people are taking pictures of boobs.
06:57Yeah.
06:57On boats.
06:58They don't care.
06:59Yeah,
06:59if he's down there eating dinner,
07:01nobody gives a crap.
07:02No one's caring.
07:03This is Joe from Lowell.
07:05Joe,
07:05what's going on?
07:06Hey,
07:07Greg,
07:07I love you.
07:10Been listening forever.
07:12Appreciate it.
07:12But you have to stop saying Roman Anthony is going out for dinner.
07:18Nobody cares that he goes out and gets a bite to eat.
07:21The rumors are that he's a wild and crazy guy.
07:27I haven't seen it,
07:29though.
07:29He's out carrying it up.
07:30I got to tell you,
07:31I'm out quite a bit.
07:33I'm out in them streets.
07:34And I don't run into him.
07:37That's what the streets are saying.
07:38He's not hanging out.
07:39He's in a small group that he hangs out with.
07:42And they go to small private parties that they hang out.
07:46I'm not saying he's getting wasted every night.
07:48Uh-oh.
07:48But when you're in the clubhouse and you're trying to play in your night out
07:53while everybody's trying to rally in the eighth and ninth inning,
07:56that kind of wears on you.
07:58All right.
07:59I guess I could understand that if that's what's going on.
08:03So everybody else is focused on work.
08:05Right.
08:05It's kind of like around here.
08:06I'm focused on work.
08:08Everybody else is focused on where the next party is.
08:11Right.
08:11What's the next vacation?
08:12I got to order a bikini for O'Gunquit next week.
08:15No Roman, no party.
08:17Sorry.
08:17We're talking about Roman Anthony.
08:18Right.
08:19Mago's already on vacation.
08:20Whatever.
08:21Now, here's a text, unfair, from my adopted home continent of Maine,
08:25that says, Greg, you don't go to the Young People Bars.
08:30Ralph.
08:31Hey, guys.
08:31Hey, Ralph.
08:32Good morning.
08:33You're from Cranston.
08:34What's up, Ralph?
08:35I'm from Cranston, Rhode Island.
08:37Look, I don't know why anyone has even mentioned the word Contreras.
08:41I mean, this guy makes less than $14 million a year.
08:45Look at his production.
08:46He's where he belongs.
08:47He's a power hitter at Fenway.
08:49I mean, I would look right this year and next.
08:52If you look at the kickback, he makes less than $14 million a year.
08:54You know, you've got to keep him in check a little bit.
08:56But let's be honest.
08:57The two guys you really could do, I mean, if you want to chase the wild card,
09:01that's one thing.
09:02But, I mean, Gray and Chapman, because of their age,
09:05if you trade these guys well, I mean, you're going to –
09:07one's going to get Cy Youngboats, and the other one's a five-minute year.
09:12The right team comes along that really needs it.
09:14If you look at the trade, you look at these two guys to see if you're going to do –
09:18I like them both, but they're older.
09:20And these are the two guys that really you could take advantage of somebody
09:23who really needs a starter.
09:25You're giving them a guy who's got 11, 12 wins.
09:27And then the closer, I love Chapman, but he's old, guys.
09:30It's going to be fascinating when it comes to what they decide to do.
09:36And it's the added importance of whether or not there's going to be a season
09:43next year or not is key to me.
09:46And so I think you operate a little bit differently if you think there is not
09:50going to be a baseball season.
09:51And John Henry, if anybody would know, he would know because he runs the
09:56compensation committee.
09:57Yeah, he's in charge of the – what is it called?
10:00Reform.
10:02He's on the Reform the Contract Committee, whatever it's called.
10:05Also, I would say, wouldn't the ownership group be viewed in a somewhat more
10:09positive light entering a protracted work stoppage if the team advances to the
10:14ALCS in the playoffs?
10:15Yeah, if they went for it and people saw the investment and saw that they were
10:20willing to go for it, and if they get farther than they did last season,
10:23certainly.
10:24And I think them – and I'd see this is –
10:26You also validate – if there were some who were questioning the move when it
10:30comes to Alex Cora, you validate that.
10:32Right.
10:33All of those things.
10:35Breslow keeps his job.
10:36All of those things.
10:37And I believe that –
10:38Greg runs the bases.
10:39That their thought process is they're good enough to get to the World Series.
10:44Like, that was their expectations before the season.
10:47Yeah.
10:47And the roster hasn't, like, drastically changed.
10:50I know there's some guys dealing with injury, but I think their expectations and
10:54what they told us, that they believed that they could get to the World Series, and a
10:58large part of that was because of their pitching, and I think that's the one area
11:02that they've really been able to stand out.
11:04And that's why I believe they're going to be big buys, because they look at this
11:07year that they're good enough to get all the way.
11:09I was listening to Brad Fow on with Rich, Ken, and Ted yesterday, and I guess one
11:13thing that I'm a little confused about with Sonny Gray, I understand he's kind of
11:17a rental at this point, but Brad Fow said out of all the injured players that he
11:23thought that Garrett Crochet might be the last one to return.
11:27And so, if you're depending so much on your rotation to get you through what you
11:32want to be a deep postseason run, then wouldn't moving on from Sonny Gray be a
11:38real blow to that if you're not getting Garrett Crochet back?
11:40Him and Chapman.
11:41Or when he comes back, I'm just thinking of the rotation, when Crochet comes back,
11:46there's nothing to say that he's going to be entirely himself.
11:49Right.
11:51I would not move on from Sonny Gray, especially when you believe that this
11:55team has what it takes to make a deep postseason run.
