00:00to talk uh baker's new deal to talk about uh expectations reasonable ones for deshaun on
00:05sunday we head out to the wise heart right we make it right call kyle right hotline the great
00:10albert breer joining us right now albert welcome to the show what's up guys well i don't know if
00:17you've heard officially the baker mayfield uh contract extension is being reported out there
00:22three years 165 million dollars 55 million dollar per season uh average for baker are you surprised
00:32at the at the deal and are you surprised at the uh the numbers for bake no because these are
00:40the things that happen right these are like i would just tell you um you know like that when you
00:50get
00:50to this part time of year there's tension because everybody's about to take on a bunch of injury
00:55risk teams look at the end of the year and see like well if we wait until then then that's
01:00a problem
01:01um and so like that's what they mean when they say deadlines spur action you know when when that real
01:08deadline comes at the start of the season it usually pushes two sides closer together and this is a good
01:13example of it all right albert uh it seems like the convo of the day has been around uh rookie
01:19tail and
01:19green and uh the idea that todd munkin said he could be the active number two quarterback behind
01:24deshaun watson but obviously ahead of chador sanders then as they take on jacksonville we don't know if
01:29that means that they would be taking three active quarterbacks if it would be taylor green and then
01:33chador would work as the emergency quarterback i i think this might just be gamemanship but how do you
01:38see this as far as uh what munkin's comments are and whether or not he's just creating an
01:43just an unnecessary quarterback controversy
01:47all right you cut out for a second there so say that one more time no do you think this
01:52is just
01:52gamemanship by munkin or do you feel like uh this is him just creating an unnecessary quarterback
01:57controversy what's the reality he could actually use taylon green as the backup quarterback in week one
02:04i mean i don't know i mean i think it's there's different things that you can do with taylon green
02:11that you can't do with the other guys in the roster right and i think we all saw the talent
02:16and you know when you're talking about a 46 man game day roster it's like okay like what
02:20purpose does that guy serve on game day and generally your backup quarterbacks are really
02:25just there for depth um there's a one guy a lot of times the only guy in the roster that
02:31you have on
02:32there that doesn't have some sort of special teams value or isn't going to play some sort of role
02:37on offense or defense and so like this comes back to kind of the case of hills and i think
02:42that's
02:43the best example of it well you know like why did the why did the saints have case of hill
02:49for games when drew breeze and teddy bridgewater were active when those guys clearly were the one
02:54in the two oh it's because there are different ways to use them whereas if your third quarterback
02:59is just a developmental guy that you don't have any use for on sunday then uh you know then then
03:06then
03:06then certainly you wouldn't dress them so like is there some gamesmanship here yeah you force them
03:11to prepare for something else but i also think that there's a real scenario where you know when
03:17you're figuring out how to use your roster spot so it could be a very useful way to plug tail
03:22and
03:22green in there albert deshaun watson starting this week a moment that i have fought for all six months
03:29that you've told me that it was a possibility and maybe a likelihood what are reasonable expectations
03:35for deshaun on sunday against jacksonville
03:40i mean i i think like the main thing is like if you have a veteran quarterback you want to
03:45be
03:45proficient running the offense right and like that's the problem with having a rookie is like
03:49are you making it harder for are you making it harder for the other guys in the huddle to operate
03:56because that guy isn't far enough along and you know in this case i think that uh you know i
04:05i think
04:05in this case it's can he get in and function at a high enough level where he can make adjustments
04:11that's going to make things easier on the linemen can he change the play can he adjust guys routes
04:17um can he can he can he look onto the other side and see the defense and use the defense's
04:23rules
04:23against it uh and that's a difficult defense to go against in jacksonville too you know so i i would
04:30just say like you know that's what you're looking for there's gonna be a lot of stuff you can't see
04:35other than the offense looks like it's running efficiently if you have a bunch of false starts
04:41and penalties and guys misaligned and you know and and free runners of the quarterback and you know
04:48things like that then you know you'll be able you'll be able to you'll be able to see that and
04:53at that
04:54point it's like okay like well like now you've sort of taken the advantage of having a veteran out
04:58there um to begin with so i say that's number one and then number two i just think like some
05:02of the
05:03the things that you're used to seeing him you you saw for him early in his career you know he
05:08was
05:08really i mean an efficient player who had really good instincts early in his career had a knack
05:13for making plays in scramble drill and so do you see some of those things maybe not the whole game
05:18but you see like certain flashes popping up where it's like okay like he gets his feet underneath
05:23there maybe we'll see a little bit more of it albert it feels like anytime we ask anyone about
05:27jacksonville it seems like a mixed bag of opinions you can find some people that say that they're
05:31overrated and then another group of people that think that well they were a 13 win team for a
05:35reason last year where do you and where do you think the rest of the nfl sides with what jacksonville
05:40is currently doing yeah i almost feel like to be honest with you doesn't it feel like people
05:45almost forgot they won 13 games last year i think yeah it feels like a lot of people have yeah
05:50i did
05:50i've been the quietest 13 win games 13 win season of all time like if you ask people on the
05:56on the
05:56street who won the afc south last year what do you think they would say
06:01houston yeah probably i bet you 80 percent i bet you 80 percent of even knowledgeable football fans
06:06would tell you the texas wanted but the jags were the ones that had a home playoff game last year
06:10you know uh so i i really like where they are like and i i put them in a similar
06:16category to chicago
06:17and new england where you could see progress but still a step back because they did have breaks last
06:22year and a lot of things did wind up going their way you know so all three of those teams
06:27are sort of
06:28like washington the year before where you know you saw um a new head coach come in and a new
06:36head
06:36coach get a young quarterback going obviously trevor's a little older than those other guys
06:41and a bunch of things go right some injury was on their side the schedule cooperated and before you
06:48know it all four of those teams won division titles and had home playoff games and so look i i
06:53think
06:53with jacksonville see a good base of young talent guys like i mean the receivers are going to be
06:58really good i think with brian thomas and parker washington and jacoby myers the offensive line
07:04with harrison and little flipping i think had a chance to be pretty good uh you know you look on
07:08the
07:08defensive side of the ball you see trayvon walker and and and josh allen and travis hunter's going to
07:14be over there full time now so there's the basis of a really good team i think that there's a
07:18chance
07:18that they're better than they were a year ago but wind up with the worst record if that makes sense
07:24now i feel like we're saying the same thing about the cleveland cavaliers so it makes total sense to
07:28cleveland fans uh albert any chance with uh seattle in new england kicking off the season tomorrow night
07:35any chance of another vrabel rossini story hitting this week no i mean i i think though i i hesitate
07:44to
07:44say no right because i saw the numbers at several different places that i work and for one reason
07:51or another i mean that was like cocaine for the internet i i don't know why you know what i
07:56mean but
07:56like it was like every single story that came out on that um for one reason or another has jet
08:04fuel on it
08:04and the traffic was unbelievable and so i think it would be i think it would be presumptuous to think
08:11that there's not somebody out there pursuing something um and like because just uh amount of
08:19attention that all they got on the flip side i i don't know what else there is to dig into
08:26here
08:27you know like i had an idea the one that came yesterday was coming and you know like that one
08:33was i mean i think more about vrabel and the patriots than it was about rossini and i think in
08:40that case
08:41it was like okay like that's one of the last things that hasn't really been covered was the
08:45patriots handling the whole thing i i just don't know what's left unless there's some new wild
08:50revelation which i i don't think there's one coming albert it feels like the talk of the nfl today
08:55is trying to figure out who's navigating the travel to australia the best is it the the 49ers plan of
09:02living there for a week or is it the the rams plan of basically seal team six we're in and
09:07then
09:07we're out and also we can we can cap in the idea that i think aaron donald is just not
09:11playing in
09:12this game because he doesn't want to do 30 hours of travel in 70 hours uh but like is there
09:16has there
09:17been any talk around the nfl of like what the proper way to do some of these 16 15 hour
09:21flights
09:21and trying to figure out the best way to do it well i mean this is the first time i've
09:25ever done it
09:26you know i mean like that is a as somebody who has been to that part of the world once
09:31um i went for my
09:33honeymoon um we went to bali and flew through hong kong and um i know how disoriented i was when
09:40i
09:40got off the plane so it is i can say from my experience it is not the same thing as
09:44going to
09:44europe um i think it's interesting how different the strategies are right like this is my perception
09:52of it just having talked to you with the two teams the niners want to go fully acclimate and be
09:56guns blazing for that rams team right so they go over there for a week that's a lot of time
10:00to
10:00acclimate and like they feel like they'll be ready to go i think the rams are looking at it they
10:06can't
10:06really say this but i think the rams are looking at it a little more like there's a full season
10:10to play
10:10so do we really want to go through acclimation then re-acclimation then like then you know like
10:19you're getting back and you have to just change your clock back versus just going grinning and bearing
10:28it like making sure your sleep schedule is on pace for those three days as best you can
10:33and not really changing the clock on yourself so when you get back you're as close as you can be
10:41to ready to roll for week two so we'll see how it goes you know i mean this is again
10:45like uncharted
10:46territory and uh you know i i don't know if it's gonna have an effect in the game or not
10:51i chances are
10:53if this is a close game we probably won't be able to tell right i mean unless one team comes
10:57out and
10:58trips over its own shoelaces for three hours like i think it might be pretty hard to tell and maybe
11:03even the players won't have answers until they're a couple weeks down the road and they have a chance
11:06to look at all of it albert i i think this is a safe space we are in in cleveland
11:12not in ann arbor so
11:13this is a great place for you to be very honest if you feel like you think the michigan western
11:19michigan
11:19uh result should be changed by some ncaa committee that the mac uh appealed to today
11:27i mean i hate the idea of overturning a result however um it is them so uh i don't know
11:36uh i like you know it's funny though like the best part about this for me like i was like
11:42a little bit like damn i you know it's kind of like root for western michigan there at the end
11:46of
11:46that game and then the then me and like a couple of my text groups decided this is actually better
11:53isn't it in what way well just losing a game just losing a game but this is like really embarrassing
12:02what they're going through right now right i think losing western michigan was about as
12:05embarrassing as it gets though i get you stamping down that l with underwood i don't know though the
12:10the reaction the the field storming the mean mugging by underwood like i i i almost feel it's
12:17more embarrassing the way like like what happened what's happening in the aftermath map i mean the
12:22fact that everybody's saying things like you know you know from the school that that brought you a title
12:28you don't recognize here's a win you don't recognize um you know all of that like i mean i i
12:33almost
12:34like is this better i mean we remember the appalachian state game for how many years now
12:40you know what i mean which which outcome and oh and if they overturn this result we will remember
12:46this one even more if they if they overturn it though but if it stays if it stays pat i
12:50feel like
12:51we talk about the western michigan loss for another 25 years if it ends up being a michigan win and
12:56let's say michigan even has like a good rest of the season which i don't think is going to happen
12:59well i i don't know that i don't know the staying power is there that's the part for me that's
13:04so
13:04interesting isn't that this oklahoma game's huge for them oh huge oh yeah like it becomes it becomes
13:08even bigger like if they go out there and just get their you know what kicked in then like then
13:13what
13:13you know what i mean like now you so i mean but then you know by the same token they
13:19can go out there
13:19and play great turn the whole thing around you know so it like lines up i think that's a really
13:24interesting interesting element of it too is like there's really a lot on the line for them
13:29on saturday now how does ohio state texas play out saturday that's a great question i think it's
13:35a really good game i don't hate texas um honestly i kind of i kind of look at them as
13:42like the southern
13:44version of us you know like the schools are so similar and they're both in capital cities and
13:49uh you know like they're both massive schools with tons of resources and so i would have loved to
13:55have gone there unfortunately it's week one of the nfl season if it had been labor day weekend i
13:59probably would have gone um i i i hesitate to say i think we went a close one i just
14:08i i think
14:10like this ohio state team is really balanced and really and really deep and i the one question i have
14:20is the offensive line and can the offensive line hold up against their defensive line
14:24but i mean even like going against like cam coleman and ryan wingo who are both going to be
14:29you know really good NFL players i think like we've got a really experienced tough secondary with
14:35sanchez and with matthews and with timmons all those guys back there i can't wait for it i think
14:41it's gonna be a really really good game albert great stuff buddy appreciate you and welcome back
