00:00Holy Toledo! And that is the PG version of what happened last night up in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
00:11You want to talk about an all-time, we'll call it a snow job. It is a Sunday morning, we'll
00:18keep it PG, Nick.
00:20All-time snow job that we have to talk about this morning.
00:25Buckeyes absolutely put the boots to Ball State. That's kind of what they were supposed to do.
00:31Uh, Guardians can't find momentum to save their life.
00:37Weapons of mass distraction for the Brownies.
00:40Going to talk about reality versus expectation for them this morning.
00:44We got a lot to get to. Audio in the open, courtesy of NBC and Peacock.
00:52As well as the Big Ten Network.
00:57And, uh, also me.
01:00A lot to get to this morning.
01:03I am still catching my breath, Nick, after watching what was a bat-crazy ending to that Western Michigan-Michigan
01:14game.
01:15And those poor kids at Western Michigan, boy do I feel for them.
01:19Crying on the sideline after a week one game because they thought they hadn't won.
01:24They thought they pulled off one of the huge upsets in recent college football history.
01:30And obviously we had one of those to start this week in college football with UMass taking down Rutgers.
01:36Um, and it looked like Western Michigan was about to do the same exact thing.
01:41Ultimate ref show takes over in Ann Arbor.
01:44They're able to find a second on the clock remaining.
01:49How about Buchanan, the receiver for Michigan?
01:53I feel like maybe lost in all of this is that kid made a great snag, uh, to come down
02:00with that football and catch the Hail Mary from Bryce Underwood.
02:05But, but, but the whole thing this morning, Daryl, that's blown my mind.
02:10A, those morons stormed the field as 30 point favorites against Western Michigan.
02:18It took them a phantom Hail Mary.
02:20And then I've got Dave Portnoy, who's a Michigan guy, you know, Michigan alum.
02:26Oh, all the, all the M words were out in full force last night, acting like they just won a
02:32national championship again.
02:34Daryl, he's screaming into his phone in the video that he posts on X about how Bryce Underwood was worth
02:41the money.
02:42And obviously he's paying a lot of that money.
02:44Dave Portnoy is with the whole NIL and he's got the it factor like it factor.
02:50You guys would have lost that game if they didn't conveniently find a second to put back on the clock.
02:57Well, if, if the it factor is lucky, then yes, he has the it factor.
03:02No kidding.
03:04Um, that because he played like hot garbage for all 60 minutes.
03:12You've seen, you know, in sports, but get called off, but, but they added time for this guy.
03:19To go back out there and have an opportunity and one second, one throw and it was a good throw.
03:25Like the receiver made a tremendous catch there in the end zone over all of those people.
03:32That's how you have to do it Hail Mary style.
03:34But, but it was an awesome catch that he was able to come down with it.
03:36Just the reaction from Michigan fans, very predictable, very exhausting, very loud for no reason.
03:44Like that was embarrassing.
03:45That was a put your tail between your legs and get to next week type of showing.
03:50But of course, Portnoy and others on social media parading around like that was a national championship win.
03:56Even though they were 30 point favorites in that game.
04:00I feel bad for the kids in Western Michigan.
04:02Okay.
04:03So this is so they, they put the second back on the clock.
04:07We have the touchdown.
04:08This is Terry McCulley last night on NBC trying to explain what the hell we just saw.
04:20The ball isn't even close to touching the player when it goes to zero.
04:25Now their system, their Hawkeye system apparently either was, had a different sink, a different sink or whatever.
04:32And they came up with one second when it touched the players.
04:36I don't see how that happened.
04:38Assuming our clock is correct.
04:40All right.
04:41So now it's important.
04:43That was actually a really good job by Terry to say, assuming our clock is correct.
04:49Now, I personally believe that NBC's clock and timing was accurate.
04:56However, at about one in the morning, the statement started flowing.
05:00You had a statement from the Mid-American Conference.
05:04You had statements from the Big Ten.
05:06Oh, yeah.
05:06We were, I knew right when that game ended, we were in for a good statement off.
05:10Now, I haven't read any of them, but I knew that there were going to be statements released.
05:14There were explanations galore.
05:15Now, this is from, this is courtesy of the Big Ten, who posted a video on their X feed of
05:26the officials reviewing the play.
05:30So, because there's a lot of conversation about impropriety that's kind of happening after this.
05:36So, here's the audio behind the scenes.
05:40Again, this is from the Big Ten Conference of the officials going through the review process.
05:47We're taking a look here.
05:49Okay, he's jumping from out of bounds.
05:50Okay, hold on, we're still looking.
05:51So, when 18 is touching the football, Jim, do you see that?
05:54It's dead when he touches the ball.
05:56When 18 is touching the football, we've got one second on the clock.
05:59No, no, I'm sorry.
06:00Do you see that?
06:00I'll just keep it going.
06:01I do.
06:02But just, hold on.
06:03And we've got him.
06:04Okay.
06:05Wait, there's a program feed.
06:06Jim, are you with me?
06:07Yes.
06:08Can you hear me, guys?
06:08Okay.
06:09So, we are going to put one second on the game clock, and we're going to have another play from
06:14the previous spot, okay?
06:15Okay, so, after review, there's one second remaining.
06:19Okay, so, and I will, even though I think it's all a mess, I'll give the Big Ten Conference credit
06:29for releasing that footage.
06:31I mean, that's very important footage, because there's a lot of folks saying, okay, which official had money on the
06:37game?
06:38You got folks saying that Western Michigan got robbed, like me, because I do feel like they got robbed.
06:44They should have just left it be.
06:46There should have been no review.
06:47They should have just left it be.
06:51You've got Michigan fans storming the field like they just won the national title by cheating once again.
06:57That was the funniest part.
06:59But, again, that was from the Big Ten Conference behind the scenes of the actual review process, them going frame
07:06by frame.
07:07You never get to hear those.
07:08They had to release it, though, because the NBC broadcast was just bamboozled.
07:14Like, the whole 30 minutes after that happened, like, nobody really had any answers as to how they put that
07:20second back on the clock.
07:22So, then there's mass confusion, and social media, you know, is assuming that the game was rigged, all that stuff.
07:28So, they had to release it, even though you typically don't see that stuff.
07:32I do think this is one of those moments, though, where logic and, like, okay, it's great.
07:37You could release that.
07:38You know, the footage, it sounds like they're in some sort of, you know, spaceship command center or whatever as
07:43they're trying to replay.
07:44You know, watch that replay and break down in real time what happened, where the ball was, who was touching
07:49it, and how much time was left.
07:50That's great.
07:52This is going to be one of those moments, though, where the memes will win.
07:56The memes will prevail.
07:58The jokes will prevail.
07:59The fact that prior to Western Michigan, college football teams were 110,352-0 since 1869, when they have a
08:11lead at the end of regulation.
08:13And this was the one time where they found a rogue second to put back on the clock and allow
08:19the Wolverines to have that opportunity for the Hail Mary.
08:24Wait a minute.
08:24Give us that record again.
08:25110,352-0 after leading at the end of regulation.
08:33That's dating back to 1869.
08:36That's with triple zeros on the clock.
08:38Yeah, that's with triple zeros on the clock.
08:42Obviously, last night, the outlier, that's the one where Western Michigan did win the game.
08:47There was no time left, but then Michigan has the rogue second put back on, and they're able to complete
08:53the Hail Mary,
08:54which, again, I can't get over the catch.
08:57The kid really did have a tremendous catch on the football, but that Western Michigan sideline was crushed.
09:04I don't know.
09:05Who does Western Michigan have next week?
09:07How do you get up for that game?
09:09Well, I know Michigan has Oklahoma next week.
09:12Western Michigan has Monmouth.
09:14How do you get up for the Monmouth Hawks after something like that?
09:20Yeah, jeez.
09:21Isn't that like a prehistoric beast or something?
09:25Isn't that a hockey team in Utah?
09:28No, that's the Mammoth.
09:30The Mammoth.
09:30Okay.
09:31I knew there was a some way, somehow that tied together.
09:35But, yeah, what a crazy, crazy – by the way, glad college football is back,
09:41even though I'm kind of real salty these days about the current state of college football.
09:47Why?
09:49The NFL players did not play for Lane Kiffin in LSU.
09:53I think everyone – you know, the fringe tight end who wasn't going to make the Browns,
09:58which is maybe one of the worst tight end rooms in football,
10:02didn't play for LSU last night.
10:04What's wrong?
10:05I feel like that's –
10:06I think Harold Fannin Jr. would like to have a word with you.
10:08Oh, Harold Fannin's a stud, but everybody else in that room I'm not so sure about.
10:12And that kid wasn't even going to make the team in that room.
10:14Did he get all in on Blake Whitehart?
10:16No, not necessarily.
10:17I just – like that whole outrage for like the NFL kids going back to college.
10:22I get that it's like a thing that – I just think we all like freaked out a little bit
10:27too much about it.
10:28Just because like that kid wasn't – the tight end that was on the –
10:32he wasn't going to play in the NFL really.
10:34No.
10:35Well, yeah, I mean, there was – I mean, he was not for long with the Browns.
10:40It reminds me – you'll like this story.
10:42Growing up playing basketball, I talk about Coach Steve all the time.
10:46It was a character in my universe that coached us for years and years and years.
10:51And he had a lot of great one-liners.
10:54And we were getting our, you know, rear ends handed to us one year.
10:58We weren't a very good team.
10:59And he lined us all up on the baseline one day at practice, Daryl.
11:04And one by one, he asked us, what sports other than basketball do we play?
11:08Oh, I thought you were going to say he made you run suicides for 20 minutes.
11:11Well, that was coming after his exercise of making us state what sports we all play.
11:17And we had a couple like hockey players.
11:19We had a couple baseball players.
11:22Did you say wiffle ball?
11:23And he was like, you know, in baseball, like when the ball is coming your way, what do you do?
11:28You grab it.
11:29You know, he was trying to get us to be more aggressive, especially defensively.
11:33He comes to this one kid.
11:35He won't share any names.
11:37And he goes, what about you?
11:38What other sport do you play?
11:40And the kid goes, football.
11:41And he looks him up and down.
11:43He goes, you aren't playing no football.
11:47He said, you might be on the team.
11:49They might have given you a jersey, but you're not playing any football.
11:55And that's kind of what this whole outrage about these NFL kids going back to college football, like the tight
12:02end from the Browns that was supposed to go to LSU.
12:04Like you might have been on the team.
12:06They might have given you a jersey, but you're not really playing any football.
12:10It's kind of how I looked at it.
12:12So, like, there was a lot of outrage, and I know Wayne Kiffin was kind of, like, making some jokes
12:17at the halftime interview on the broadcast about imagine what it would look like if we had pros, and he
12:24was leaning into the whole heel angle of it.
12:27I just don't think it's, like, a big deal.
12:31I think it's a big deal.
12:33100% it's a big deal.
12:36Once you sign with an NFL team, or you are drafted by an NFL team, you're done.
12:43It's not like they sign, like, Patty Mahomes, though.
12:46It doesn't matter.
12:47Does not matter.
12:50It is a matter.
