Something unpleasant happened at school today.

I felt like the whole class was giving me cold stares.

On my way home from school that evening, even though it had been sunny that morning, it started pouring rain—just my luck.

Enduring the discomfort of my wet uniform clinging to my skin, I finally managed to squeeze onto the bus.

Then, as I was getting off the bus, my foot slipped on the wet floor, and I took a spectacular tumble.

A few passengers looked up, but they quickly averted their gaze as if they’d lost interest.

“Are you okay?” the driver asked through the rearview mirror, his voice sounding annoyed.

Deep in his eyes, I could see a terribly cold expression.

I didn’t answer and got off the bus as if fleeing.

The rain grew even heavier.

My uniform was covered in mud, and my heart was in pieces. I didn’t care anymore. I just wanted to stand there in the rain and fade away.

Just as I started walking with that thought in mind, I heard a voice from behind me.

“Excuse me. We’d like to go to Shin’en-ji Temple…”

When I turned around, there stood a middle-aged man and a woman who appeared to be his wife.
Honestly, it was a nuisance. I wasn’t in any state to talk to anyone right now. But I didn’t have the courage to ignore them, so I brusquely gave them directions.

“Oh, if that’s where you’re going… just go straight down this street…”
“Oh, that’s a big help. If you don’t mind, would you like to walk with us part of the way?”

The man didn’t seem to notice my grumpy expression; he smiled broadly and held out his umbrella.

“No, thanks. I’m already wet, and I’m going to run home.”
“Come on, it’s no big deal,” he said, ushering me under his umbrella.

I’m a big guy. The man’s umbrella was small, so my shoulders stuck out and got wet.

“I don’t want to get you wet, so maybe I should…”
“I’m already wet anyway. I don’t know the way, so please stick with me.”

Saying that, the man gave my shoulder a light pat.
It was a strange walk. There’s only one road to the temple. There was no way I could get lost.

Eventually, we arrived right in front of my house.

“…This is fine. Thank you very much. The temple is just around that corner.”

I bowed deeply, and the man nodded with satisfaction.

“Thanks, you really helped me out. Wipe yourself off right away or you’ll catch a cold. See you.”

The two of them set off walking through the rain again.

For some reason, I found myself staring after them for a while as they walked away.

Just then, carried on the wind, I heard my wife’s voice.

“Dad, what are you going to the temple for? It’s way past closing time, isn’t it?”

My heart gave a sudden thud deep inside my chest.

I hadn’t had any business at the temple to begin with.

Just so that kid—soaking wet, covered in mud, and on the verge of tears—wouldn’t be left alone, that man had walked all the way to a temple he didn’t even want to go to.

My body, which must have been frozen to …

00:03I felt like everyone in the class was giving me cold stares.
00:06In the evening after school, when I was walking, it was sunny that morning,
00:10It started raining heavily.
00:11Enduring the unpleasant feeling of the wet uniform sticking to my skin,
00:14I finally managed to get on the bus that had just pulled up.
00:17And when I got off the bus, my feet got caught on the wet floor.
00:20I took a spectacular fall.
00:21Several passengers looked up,
00:23He quickly lost interest and looked away.
00:26Are you okay?
00:27The driver, through the rearview mirror, spoke in a voice that sounded annoyed.
00:30put out.
00:31Deep within those eyes, I could see a terribly cold expression.
00:34I didn't answer and got off the bus as if I were running away.
00:37The rain intensifies.
00:39My uniform is covered in mud, and my heart is in tatters.
00:41I don't care anymore.
00:43I want to be drenched in the rain and disappear.
00:46As I started walking with those thoughts, I heard a voice from behind me.
00:49Excuse me, but I'd like to go to the temple for the New Year celebration.
00:52Looking back, there it was,
00:54An elderly man and a woman who appeared to be his wife were standing there.
00:57To be honest, it was annoying.
00:59I'm not in a state to talk to anyone right now.
01:02But I didn't have the courage to ignore it either.
01:04I gave directions in a gruff manner.
01:06Ah, if you're going there, just go straight down this road.
01:09Oh, that's a relief.
01:10If you don't mind, would you like to go together part of the way?
01:13The man didn't seem to notice my unhappy expression at all.
01:17She smiled and offered me her umbrella.
01:19That's fine. I'm wet, so I'll just run home.
01:22Well, that's fine, isn't it?
01:24With that, she invited me under her umbrella.
01:26I'm a big guy.
01:28The man's umbrella was too small, and his shoulders were exposed and got wet.
01:31I don't want to get wet.
01:33Well, since we're already wet anyway.
01:35I don't know the way, so please come with me.
01:37The man said that and lightly patted me on the shoulder.
01:41It was a strange journey.
01:42There's a straight road to the temple.
01:43There's no way I should be confused.
01:45Eventually, we arrived in front of my house.
01:48This is fine.
01:49thank you very much.
01:51The temple is just around the corner.
01:53When I bowed deeply, the man nodded with satisfaction.
01:57there was.
01:57Thank you. You saved me.
01:59Wipe yourself down right away, or you'll catch a cold.
02:01See you later.
02:01The two of them started walking again in the rain.
02:03For some reason, I watched the two of them move away for a while.
02:07It was packed.
02:08At that moment, I heard my wife's voice carried on the wind.
02:11Dad, what are you going to do at a temple?
02:14It's probably closed by now.
02:16My heart skipped a beat deep inside.
02:18I never had any reason to go to the temple in the first place.
02:21She was soaking wet, covered in mud, and looked like she was about to burst into tears.
02:24Ki,
02:25To prevent them from being alone,
02:26That person walked all the way to a temple they didn't even want to go to.
02:30My body, which had been completely chilled to the bone, gradually began to warm up.
02:33Let's go.
02:34My vision suddenly blurred, and large tears mingled with the rain.
02:37I might feel uncomfortable with the stares from my classmates again tomorrow.
02:40But for just a few minutes, I was allowed to share that man's umbrella.
02:43Only,
02:44I felt like I was being welcomed into this world.
02:46Thank you for watching.
