00:00Boomer, do you think then that government intervention is necessary?
00:03And how would you make that happen, though?
00:05Because as you know, every state has its own bylaws.
00:08I mean, how could you make this with sweeping changes to affect, say, college football teams in California or college
00:14football teams in New York and Florida?
00:16How do you make that happen?
00:17Well, the only way you can make it happen is if you have Congress, meaning the House of Representatives, the
00:22Senate, and, of course, the president all agreeing on some sort of law that could basically corral all the nonsense
00:30that's going on right now.
00:32I don't think anybody wants to take any money away from players under the nil understanding.
00:38But I think that there has to be federal statutes that have to be put in place to basically make
00:44sure everybody's playing from the same playing field.
00:47But unfortunately, as we have found out over the last, you know, 20 years, Congress doesn't get along very well
00:53these days.
00:54Everybody has their own interests at heart.
00:56They don't have the bigger picture interest at heart.
00:59So it's going to be very, very difficult.
01:01It's one of the reasons why they put Commissioner Baker in charge of the NCAA.
01:06You know, he's a former Republican governor in the state of Massachusetts, a very blue state, figuring that maybe he
01:13could be the guy that could get everybody on board.
01:16But it doesn't seem like he's having any luck at all.
01:19As a matter of fact, I played golf about two weeks ago with Bruce Pearl, the former coach at Tennessee
01:25and Auburn, basketball coach.
01:26Now, he's been very vocal about having ideas that, you know, could help actually even the playing field or level
01:34the playing field.
01:34But I just don't see it happening just simply because, as you just said, Dan, 50 states, 50 sets of
01:41governors, different representatives representing different interests.
01:45It's going to be really, really difficult to slow this down.
01:48But I wouldn't be surprised that LSU is doing this to force Congress to do something about the ridiculous nature
01:56of what's going on, especially NFL players going back to fulfill their fifth year commitment.
02:03You know, it's like you said, I think I don't want to speak for you here, Boomer.
02:07It's almost like, hey, don't hate the player, hate the game, because that's what these guys are just taking advantage
02:12of right now.
02:12And the game right now is that Lane Kiffin can go out there and do this.
02:16Hey, Lane Kiffin, I mean, you know, one thing you could say about him, you can hate this guy all
02:20you want.
02:20But, boy, you and I know this.
02:23Villains are awesome in sports, aren't they?
02:25The greatest thing that you can have in a sport is a villain.
02:28Is he not the ultimate villain right now in college football?
02:32So let me tell you, the Lane Kiffin that I know in 1993 or 94, I think it was 94,
02:37he was an intern at the New York Jets camp when I was the starting quarterback for the Jets.
02:41And I used to give him a 50 or 100 to go get my car washed.
02:45And he always brought it back.
02:47So that is the Lane Kiffin that I know.
02:50The guy that we see now is absolutely out of his mind, but in a good way, I think.
02:54I mean, and villains are probably, is a good way of putting it.
02:58And right now, he's got the target on his back, but he's always seemed to have a target on his
03:04back.
03:04So I'm not surprised that he is at the forefront of all of this and creating all of this outside
03:11noise, if you will.
03:13But I also think that he loves players.
03:15I really do, Dan.
03:16I think you and I probably would love playing for him because I think that he, in his heart, wants
03:22to do right by the players.
03:23Now, in order to do right by the players, you have to win.
03:26And I think that also is a motive enough for him to make some of these decisions.
