00:00in the brad holmes news conference today 248-539-9797 you heard that exchange there
00:06that was um lively but yeah i don't think anything was necessarily out of bounds i don't think it's
00:12a huge deal dave's got a job to do dave asked some questions brad got a little defensive and
00:19on you know i don't think he needs to but he in that particular case it sounded like he did
00:24get
00:25a little defensive but uh at the end of the day uh this is a football team that i think
00:30is going to
00:30have a really good season um but there are some risks that were taken that could undermine their
00:37chances and you know the debate really today was centered around whether or not they did enough
00:42in the secondary and they did they do it in a timely fashion given the terry on arnold uncertainty
00:49okay um it's funny we got a text here from a listener about uh brad holmes signings who he
00:58goes after and he spoke today about injured players um here was the text brad holmes constantly holds
01:06his team back with his constant signings of hurt bargain bin basement players holmes always shopping
01:12at the dollar store well here's what he said about signing injured players
01:58you know it's funny the one caller called and said that he thinks that they're off season
02:03they spent a lot of time in addressing depth and that last year when guys started to go down with
02:11injuries they didn't have enough depth to to withstand all the injuries that they they took on
02:20well they've certainly it looks like on paper they've added quality depth to the offensive line
02:26it looks like the defensive line is is quality depth there uh by going getting devon white
02:33at linebacker spot i couldn't agree more with that signing i think that makes all the sense in the
02:40world i loved it i can't believe other teams weren't in on that and that he's here for this
02:44little of a cost um i i think they've added some some depth at good areas do they have a
02:52lack of
02:52depth in other spots i think they do but you're not going to have the perfect roster and when it
02:57comes to you know players and injuries of course everybody gets hurt it's a violent sport but i think
03:03where people and fans get upset is if you're going to take a chance on somebody who has an injured
03:09past and it's played five years in the league and missed significant time in three of those seasons but
03:16you're going to give them an opportunity at the cost of you know going after somebody that that might
03:21be you know more more consistent i mean or whatever the case is they take chances on these players but
03:29they
03:29don't give them big contracts but they take chances on them whether it's marcus davenport or it's a
03:33you know isaiah pacheco uh all right so one other topic of conversation that people have focused on
03:40of course is the offensive line everybody knows that that's been a it was a strength when they had
03:49frank ragnow they had the the veteran tackle and decker they had a good young tackle and penny sewell
03:55uh really seemed to be in really really good shape in their best seasons and then last year not as
04:01much
04:02how does he feel about the offensive line as it stands right now here's what brad holmes said today
04:31uh
04:34uh
04:36uh
04:36uh
04:53uh
04:54uh
04:59uh
05:12uh
05:13uh
05:14uh
05:14uh
05:40any thoughts
05:41uh
05:41like we had to say about you know we're big fans of miles fraser on the show i think he's
05:45got a lot of
05:45great future in the national football league and i i hope he gets a could be an asset yeah it
05:50could
05:50be and i i hope that he continues to work hard and and pushes the envelope pushes other players
05:55and maybe he gets an opportunity okay so he mentioned blake miller in there and gator you found
06:02the story on cbs sports by josh edwards yep did i sense an eye roll over there uh yes i'm
06:09sorry was
06:09that audible
06:09it wasn't just a visual after the preseason grading every first round pick every first round pick was
06:20great after the preseason
06:22mm-hmm
06:23blake miller
06:25who was selected at 17 by the lions preseason snaps 48
06:29here's what he wrote
06:31blake miller's a physical player who drives his feet on contact in the run game to create displacement
06:36he will strain and fight even when he is back on his heels against the bull rush
06:41problems arose when he dipped his head allowed defenders to get their hands into his body
06:47or short set in pass protection
06:49true media credit him with three pressures allowed
06:51hank fraley is an excellent offensive line coach
06:54so there is some confidence miller will get those issues cleaned up
06:58the grade for blake miller in the preseason
07:01d
07:02plus
07:05monroe freeling it went two picks later
07:07i'm sorry who
07:08monroe freeling
07:09thank you
07:10monroe freeling is making the switch from left to right tackle but outsiders would never know it from his performance
07:15he showed some independent hand usage
07:18targeting soft shoulders and stunting his opponents rush
07:21he has the foot quickness to pull and reach the front side of the outside zone blocks
07:26freeling plays with good leverage but has room for improvement when it comes to sustaining blocks
07:31freeling made 18 career starts at left tackle at georgia
07:34so he's still a relatively inexperienced player refining his craft
07:37number of preseason snaps
07:3920
07:41grade
07:42a minus
07:46yes so i have a there was a very loud eye roll
07:49um
07:51and this isn't new look that i wanted to draft on roe freeling
07:54yes but i i like blake miller just fine i think blake miller is
07:58we've said before has a really high floor and
08:01the ceiling is higher than his floor so
08:03let's let's get going here i
08:06watched every snap he had in preseason
08:09i don't recall him being
08:13uh beaten
08:14he gave up three pressures i mean i i'm
08:16i'm sure i can remember a pressure that he gave up but
08:19i thought i thought blake miller played really well
08:22as the right tackle in this in this team
08:25in the limited snaps we saw him play in the preseason
08:27i thought he played well
08:29knowing what they've said the coaches have said about him in
08:32in practice seeing what the
08:33the media has said about him when they're privy to the practice
08:37does not sound like a d plus player
08:40dude it's the worst grade of any player
08:42did anybody else have a d it's the worst grade of any draft pick in the first round
08:47this dude for cbs sports josh edwards
08:51hates the blake miller pick at this point
08:53and and gives it a d plus
08:55because his head tipped forward on a couple plays
08:57yeah after seeing 48 snaps
09:01i i mean
09:03that's fine yeah you do you
09:04yeah i'm not drawing any conclusions on really any of these guys
09:07no i just thought this
09:08this man very counter to what we've heard from other people
09:11you know who would have got a d plus based on their preseason
09:14jamar chase
09:16remember that preseason in cincinnati
09:18yeah
09:18he was dropping everything that was thrown to
09:21remember the size of the football came up
09:23well what do you give carnell tate
09:26wide receiver
09:28um
09:29was a top 10 pick right
09:31yeah
09:31uh
09:32i've lost the story hold on
09:34uh
09:34uh
09:35give me a second
09:36i mean it certainly wasn't a d
09:38he gave
09:40carnell
09:41tate
09:43what'd he go
09:43fifth no
09:45fourth
09:45he gave him a c
09:46gave him a c
09:47and carnell tate
09:49did what do you have like one reception or something
09:51none of his six passes intended for carnell tate were completed this preseason
09:54he struggled to create separation and the offense did him few favors creating easy wins
09:59but gets a c
10:00nope
10:02but
10:02but blake
10:03got a d
10:04tips his head forward and gets a d plus i don't know
10:06whatever you rate how you're going to grade i don't really i don't care what this
10:10guy is because i thought it was interesting and then do the a couple picks later there's
10:13monroe freeling uh and effusive in the in the praise but other other guys it's interesting
10:18when you look at the other grades he gave the other offensive lineman there weren't
10:21very high outside from freeling the other grades were not high for fanu and mawanoa and
10:29uh and uh ionia uh those those guys did not have high grades so it's interesting
10:34just to look at it and just say okay cool hook them i'll check out and see what happens
10:39in the regular season we can look back at this and say you're a fool
10:42these are these are spot on two early calls to say a plus or d d plus but well
10:47when players have like 20 opportunities to show what they have in a preseason i mean i guess
10:51i guess ridiculous the exercise exercise to do yeah this exercise itself is flawed but
10:57hey all right college football questions anonymous or college football coaches rather anonymously
11:02answer the questions who will win it all who's a sleeper to win it all who is overhyped
11:08hear what they had to say anonymously today at 12 20 uh fun with vegas odds at 12 35
11:14it's carson anderson 97 one
11:17you
