The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister Vijay is contemplating constructing a new secretariat, moving administration out of the seventeenth-century Fort St. George. Three locations have been identified, including sites at Guindy, Pattinapakkam, and Nandambakkam, with plans awaiting a final decision. The opposition AIADMK has criticised the move, accusing the administration of prioritising personal convenience and publicity over public welfare despite claims of an empty treasury. Previous attempts by former chief ministers M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa to build a permanent new secretariat faced protests and subsequent conversions. Congestion at the current Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai building continues to prompt discussions on relocation.

00:04We're learning that a TVK government contemplating to build new secretariat.
00:10Three locations identified with one close to Chief Minister residence.
00:15One location identified close to Rajpavan.
00:19Plan awaiting final mort.
00:20Will Chief Minister Vijay succeed in attempt failed by Karnanidhi and Jaya?
00:26AIDMK hits out at Vijay over the new secretariat.
00:30AIDMK slams publicity over welfare for the TVK government.
00:35And AIDMK says that Treasury is empty but new secretariat is the priority of the government.
00:42AIDMK has also said that offers near residence for convenience.
00:46So those are the attacks by the opposition AIDMK against the TVK government
00:50over talks for new secretariat.
00:53For Kamal Dao to Chief Minister Vijay, we're learning that Chief Minister Vijay could move
00:59to new secretariat from the 17th century fort.
01:03And the TMK government is contemplating to build a new secretariat.
01:07Three locations have already been identified with one which is very close to the Chief Minister's
01:11residence.
01:12And that is what the AIDMK is attacking on.
01:15That welfare is not the TVK government's priority.
01:19The Treasury is empty.
01:21And their priority is shifting the secretariat closer to the Chief Minister's residence for
01:27his convenience.
01:33We're standing in front of the Namakal Kavindar Maliki, which is inside the secretariat of
01:39Tamil Nadu.
01:39And when it comes to construction of a new secretariat for the state, it ends up in controversy.
01:44In fact, former Chief Minister Jair Alida, considering that this is a kind of congestion the Tamil Nadu
01:49secretariat is facing, decided to go ahead and construct a new one.
01:53But that plan was dropped after massive students' protests and politicians' protests.
01:58However, Karuna Nidhi, the former Chief Minister, was at least successful in constructing a new
02:03building, but that, after DMK lost power and AIDMK came to power, Jair Alida converted that
02:09particular building into a super-specialty hospital, making Tamil Nadu not having any new
02:15secretariat.
02:16And since then, for almost a decade or more than that, this is the condition of the place
02:22over here.
02:23This is the old secretariat's area, where you could also see that there is absolute congestion
02:28and every day this has been the situation over here.
02:31So, the bigger question is, will Tamil Nadu get a new secretariat?
02:36The Chief Minister's office could be moved to this particular place, the 10th floor in
02:40this particular building.
02:41But what about the expansion?
02:43And finally, after decades or so, this is inside a 17th century fort, Fort St. George.
02:50Now, after several decades, will Tamil Nadu get a new secretariat is the biggest question
02:57that is being put forward.
02:59The choice of shifting secretariat to three new locations clearly rises a question whether
03:09this DBK government, which has come to power, is welfare-centric, people-centric or publicity-centric.
03:17The answer is, it is publicity-centric, because all the three locations chosen would be for
03:23a convenient to Mr. Vijay to travel from his residence, rather than serving the need and
03:28purpose of the new secretariat.
03:31Already, they claim that the Treasury is empty.
03:35Now, trying to venture into those areas where there will be a bigger ticket budget that would
03:40be required, clearly indicates that this government has pushed the welfare of the people into the
03:47bottom-most list of their priority.
03:49And their priority has become more into publicity and reels.
03:54And my colleague, Pramod Madhav, is now joining us on this story.
03:57Pramod, a very good morning to you.
03:59So, what prompted the TVK government to MUL moving to a new place, moving the secretariat to a new location?
04:06Pramod Madhav, the important aspect over here is that when it comes to Tamil Nadu and the battle
04:10over creating a new secretariat, both Jelta and Karnanadi, the former chief ministers, were not able to
04:15successfully do so.
04:16So, will the Vijay to go ahead and the chief minister be able to create one itself is a very
04:20big question.
04:21However, for now, the office of the chief minister is being moved to a new building from the heritage building.
04:26And now, our sources claim that there are three locations that have been identified.
04:29But the important aspect here seems to be that the main concern of the government would be to make it
04:34such a format
04:35that it will be much, you know, maximum convenience for the people.
04:38So, the actual location is yet to be identified.
04:40But very clearly, our sources indicate that there are plans to actually move the kind of a battle that's been
04:48happening for nearly three decades.
04:50And finally, TVK, as also the TVK government, also looks like it wants to join this particular issue.
04:55Unfortunately, when it comes to Tamil Nadu, the creation of a new secretariat has always ended up
04:59in a controversy, aren't they?
05:01All right, Pramo, thank you for those details.
05:04In fact, what we're also learning is that some locations have reportedly been finalized.
05:11And these locations include Gindi, the highway research station campus, which is approximately
05:1635 acres.
05:17Then there's also another location, Pattina Pakkam, which is an area exceeding 20 acres.
05:22And Anandam Pakkam, a site opposite the FinTech city, which is approximately over 20 acres.
05:28So, these are some of the places where the new secretariat construction is possible.
