00:00to the morning roast on this fabulous victory victory friday august 28th 49ers end their
00:09preseason 18 to 12 is the final score of last night's contest and it's good uh good night to
00:16be an eddie pinheiro fan as eddie money accounts for all 18 of the 49ers points he goes six for
00:24six kicking field goals yesterday and you know is he the greatest mid-season non-trade pickup
00:30in niner history that is the voice of joe shasky right there coming right in with a very very
00:37poignant question there joe he might be considering where this kicking game was at this time last year
00:44where we're wringing our hands and bending over backwards trying not to lose our minds over the
00:49existence of one jake moody who's not signed and is a nfl free agent so he's available if the giants
00:56wanted not the giants the uh 49ers want to go get him if any now that's no eddie pinero last
01:01night
01:02and i'm not i'm not trying to like overdo this he had 10 extra yards on every single field goal
01:08right down the middle eddie pinero look and then they set a stat he's like 110 for 118 the last
01:16four
01:16years that's incredible statistically speaking i think just by kicking by field goal percentage wise
01:22he is i think the most if not one of the most accurate kickers not in the nfl today as
01:29in right
01:29now the present time but in like the entire history of the national football league he is one of the
01:36best at going out there and basically making you feel really good about your chance of making a field
01:42and and deep ones very deep i mean from 40 to 59 yards his deepest was from 59 last night
01:48last night
01:49he hit a 59 yard he had a couple chip shots 24 25 for the first two then he had
01:53a 48 yarder then that
01:5459 yarder and then just for fun the fourth quarter he chipped in a uh a 51 and a 54
01:59in the last two
02:01minutes of that game to put it away i mean it shortens the field for your 49ers offense going into
02:08this
02:08season and just we would we don't take kickers for granted here i mean we had kicker watched last
02:13year because of how bad it was with jake moody and listen there's we're going to be debating
02:18throughout the show what do we know about this team what answers do we have about this team all that
02:23kind of stuff from our three preseason games and whatever takeaways we can glean from it right off
02:29the bat though let's just start off here with this kicking game here joe yeah checked off good
02:34nothing nothing more to see here and corliss waitman looks good too uh the return game is
02:39up in the air you know it's very interesting really quick on corliss sorry i'm gonna run you off here
02:43uh the directional punting for him he's good he didn't put anything in the middle field tim ryan
02:48and again guy who even were on the broadcast last night pointed it out and it's like oh wow he
02:51really
02:52is like in the corner yes every time he is going to make it very difficult for opposing off for
02:57opposing teams to get their offensive drive start or at least get good fielding
03:02position because of his punting ability the guys who use their legs on the field joe eddie pinheiro
03:08corliss waitman two positions that again not going to make or break a super bowl run but two positions
03:13you don't really need to worry about as much it broke their season a couple years ago that's a fair
03:17point actually jake moody didn't miss that like they didn't make the playoffs because of that well actually
03:21well jake moody had that block extra points i mean yeah so anyway you know yeah you're you're right
03:25actually maybe it does i'm looking at this team and i think that there are some things to be
03:28really excited about and then i think there are some things that don't look so good you know and
03:34um obviously it's preseason it doesn't mean this doesn't mean that i look at the other side of the
03:39ball and we can get to this a little later very iffy on mendoza number one overall pick heisman winner
03:50champion he looked a little scurred yeah he looked very much if i'm gonna be very kind on fernando
03:59mendoza i don't know why i would raw very raw i think he's gonna have a long season on the
04:05bench
04:05it makes sense why the raiders went with kirk 100 and like kirk after the game i don't think we
04:10need
04:10to name what kirk you're gonna be the starter it's okay yeah he looks infinitely better but he looked
04:14like like his his his feet or there's jumpiness with the feet he was kind of almost scattered
04:19with his footwork at times he threw a lot of high balls there like he just didn't he's gonna be
04:24a
04:25look he's gonna be a work in progress and i the thing about fernando which is good for the raiders
04:28he does not need to step in day one and lead them to a win no but when you take
04:33a number one overall
04:34you know there's a ton of pressure and i take a step back and i go do you remember what
04:39it was like
04:40when we were all like living and breathing on every trey lance drop back and it felt terrifying
04:45and it goes back to brock purdy and why thank god we have brock purdy we could argue about
04:50is he worth 55 or 51 million is he worth 48 million he's he's good he's really good and
04:58matt jones who i like and didn't look great yesterday because it looked like he was off
05:02you know kind of off kilter regarding guys and him not being on the same page i just feel so
05:08refreshed
05:09that we are not in that living and dying on every drop back of what hopefully can be
05:14the savior of the franchise quarterback it's just a ton of pressure i feel bad for the guy already i
05:20mean that's again i you saw two teams yesterday they're just on such different ends of the spectrum
05:25you got the 49ers on one end who the preseason's more formality for them yes they know who they are
05:30and that is why you don't need to see a whole lot of the starting uh players out there i
05:35think we
05:36went through the snap count before the show here joe so how many did brock purdy in all three
05:39playoff uh playoff preseason games how many actual snaps 12 preseason snaps for brock purdy i think he
05:48threw the ball on six of those snaps debo had 10 one of those snaps being that you know pass
05:54that
05:54brock threw to him that had us all freaking out how many first dribbling he didn't suit up yesterday
05:58and i'm glad he didn't suit up because i think he's extremely important for this team no mike evans
06:03no trent williams i don't have striplings in front of me i'll have to look a little bit more for
06:07that
06:07but he did play a lot uh diablo lenore was the only starter uh primary starter on the defense who
06:13got
06:13any snaps he got 17 against the chargers so you got very uh jake brando colt mckivitt's got a few
06:18snaps okay so nothing from trent from the whole preseason and never gonna see trent all preseason
06:23from evans nothing from cmc and considering how they've been utilized at practice totally agree those
06:29are three guys where it's like i know what i'm getting from you you guys just need to get right
06:34right and that's kind of what i was saying you got two teams on the opposite end of the spectrum
06:37a team like the niners they know exactly what they are the preseason is more just get your body into
06:42playing shape i don't need to see chris mccaffrey out there because i know he can get himself ready
06:46absolutely contrast that to the raiders where joe they did start their uh starting unit yesterday they
06:53had their starting centers out there they're starting running backs 71 running back behind alfred collins yeah
06:59mauling him that's not linderbaum is it on the raiders there was one of their guards 71 just i
07:05mean i know it's glaze on the drove him into the ground and so now we get to like so
07:09there's the
07:09made men on the team and then there are guys that are like trying to prove themselves yeah and that
07:13is what the niners are it's like because we asked the question because watch that preseason game last
07:17night i'm gonna be honest that was a grind like most of these preseason games no i disagree i actually
07:21enjoyed it okay i actually enjoyed whether you enjoyed it whether it was a grind the importance of
07:25these preseason games at the end it is for what is this back end of the roster going to look
07:30like
07:31what are the second like for the niners okay so let's get to like the nitty-gritty yeah so like
07:35you talked about the offensive line starters for the raiders i thought that cj west and alfred
07:40collins look thoroughly outmatched stock literally plummeting it cj west i would elevate a little bit
07:45over alfred collins if i had to choose one or the other they're like again if i'm gonna be nice
07:51about cj west he did not have as many plays where he was in reverse as alfred collins did
07:56alfred collins like you might as well have put in the uh the truck beeper on him beep beep beep
08:02because he was moving back every single play that he was out there he's standing up too high
08:08offensive linemen are getting up underneath him that was a very poor showing from alfred collins
08:12he's just he's not good he's a big stiff who gets pushed back and you know ryan tim ryan was
08:17trying
08:17to defend him oh you know this might have been a double team block and then they showed the replay
08:21and it was not um now there were other times that they did get double teamed the two of them
08:26but
08:26i i don't know if they only fit robert sala system and they don't fit raheem raheem system but
08:33i came away going i'm not sure these two are a fit for what we're doing this year and that
08:39sucks because
08:39one was a second round pick and one was a fourth round pick um and so like that's one end
08:45of the
08:46spectrum that's kind of like the negative right yeah the parts you're concerned about on that
08:50defense now now and i'll get another guy in there negative before i go to any of the positive but
08:55like you i think if you look at the box score you'd look at jordan walkins his numbers and you're
08:59like
08:59oh he had a pretty good game i was really unimpressed with him and i really want to like him
09:05i want to
09:06like him he's a tentative kick returner i think he's a his best skill set right now is punt returner
09:11actually i really do he's a tentative kick returner he does not like putting his arms out
09:17there and trying to catch a ball in traffic and that bugs me i thought that he played very tentative
09:26extremely soft he has skill in terms of speed you can see that he's got a little wiggle but i
09:33really
09:34wasn't impressed with jordan walkins and i want to like him i really do the guy i liked was number
09:4086
09:40who i probably won't even make the team some random wide receiver and then i came away was
09:45could daryl hodge i want to say it is hodge the other guy that i really was impressed with
09:49um on offense time up going deep down the well reach he the tight end this guy reminded me of
09:56george kittle he was fighting for yards out there he made play after play at a touchdown called back
10:01like i i show me this this this rookie or whoever this tight end was i liked him and then
10:08we get to
10:09the running backs and and sam i was just going on a deep dive how many how many touches last
10:15year
10:15for brian robinson your backup running back for brian robinson it was probably guys probably around
10:20100 ish right 92 okay yeah it was close okay so whoever your top dog is the second guy
10:29has not eclipsed more than 92 carries in the last five years under shanahan wait so that 92 from b
10:35rob
10:35that was the high of the last five years the second most who in the last five years has had
10:41more that's
10:43your primary there's a primary backup behind the guy behind mccaffrey jeff wilson jr in 2022
10:49i was gonna go eli mitchell but i guess eli mitchell was technically a starter at one point
10:53he was so just to give you an example i personally believe that i've come away from this preseason
10:59i think it would almost be malpractice malpractice for combined carries of kalen black
11:08and the young man jordan james combined they need 140 minimum carries
11:17this year and if shanahan does not do that my head will explode it's not if he doesn't give those
11:23guys those touches it's also the because you're we're trying to take touches away from christian
11:27mccaffrey but that's my point exactly those guys are getting those carries carries aren't going to
11:31debo carries aren't going to cmc and and juice did you know that juice had two carries for minus
11:37three yards last year don't try that ever again we're done we're done we're done with the bad ones
11:41too just although the runs up the middle some of them he had last year but do you know your
11:4513th
11:45third leading rusher was last year brock purdy that's that's not with a torn toe that's not a
11:51good stat with a torn toe mccaffrey had 413 touches last year 311 rushing attempts if you can make that
11:57311 rushing attempts more look more like his touches i'm feeling really good looks he looks strong
12:05he looks but he looks 25 doesn't he yes body type he runs hard he's decisive james has a little
12:12more wiggle to him i thought that was the best i've ever seen jordan james look and i've been
12:17waiting to see he had one run up the middle i think it was in the second quarter uh here
12:21is yeah he's
12:21kind of bulldozer run uh late in the second quarters at first and 10 from the 26 bulldozers for 16
12:28breaks at least one or two tackles there and like james i see him like he's got the speed but
12:33you saw the
12:33the muscle he had a couple little like breakthroughs a little vision yeah like i liked him you got
12:38you're dare i say too deep at backup running back right now which is why i think the two of
12:43them
12:44because i know why they brought debo back i think there was an insurance policy on absolutely jordan
12:47james on wide receivers and i'm just looking at the the debo usage so like when he broke out you
12:54know
12:54that year he broke out the wide back year yeah 2021 59 carries for 365 yards the very next year
13:02the numbers fell off the the the map that was the year they traded for christian mccaff yeah we
13:07had that holden during camp remember a guy remember i remember we saw him at training camp
13:11and he's like he was out of shape debo at that time and then and then you look at the
13:15next year
13:1637 carries 225 actually worked better than you thought that was 2023 the niners were perfect here
13:22they have full strength the very next year after that 2024 42 carries for 136 yards starting to go in
13:31the opposite direction here exactly so if you're asking me right now do i want to see debo samuel
13:35get a couple touches in the backfield no i do not i would rather give those carries to jordan james
13:41and kayla black and just see what we have in those young men i think what we're seeing is to
13:46your point
13:46we are seeing guys who are to keep debo out of the backfield when they first brought debo back joe
13:50my first thought was i'm not going to say he's going to get seven or eight carries a game no
13:55but like
13:56he'll get a couple my initial thought was four or five times a guy four or five times a game
14:00he
14:01totes it out of the backfield to spell christian mccaffrey or you do uh what you did in 2023 which
14:06is when you had mccaffrey and debo lining up in the backfield together which i call one of the most
14:10unfair formations in football if you're on the defensive side of the ball you would have a
14:14little bit more of that as this preseason has gone along joe i am getting more into where you are
14:20out right there where if debo is a wide receiver only this year that's aces with me like i'm cool
14:27with that i would like to see debo come out of the backfield from time to time they're going to
14:30aim them at receiver oh no they absolutely will i enjoyed debo coming out of the backfield as as
14:35the wide back that was just enjoyable when they got him on a linebacker it made sense but i think
14:39a
14:39lot of teams started putting safeties on him and then he got sluggish and linebackers started to be
14:44able to to be able to stay with him and it it took away the versatility but but going back
14:49to my number
14:50140 last thing on t was like point being just he does not need to be that runner of the
14:54ball this
14:54year what i thought that they were bringing him back for is no longer the case and i like that
14:58what's the magic number that he's trying to hit 30 right he wants to go 30 or more carries
15:02kyle does kyle does yes exactly if you go around 20 for cmc to me the next eight eight if
15:09you go
15:09eight a game somewhere between kaylon and jordan james eight that's not a lot by the way your
15:1520 carries for cmc has good ballpark around 340 rushes at the end of the year at that average
15:21i know i know but let's be realistic like 17 to 22 carries is probably about accurate yes for cmc
15:27you'll have a couple of brock touches where it goes down as a run but really it was him scrambling
15:32yes right and so and then you'll have a couple of these like they did last night these design jet
15:36sweeps a couple of tosses like they got jordan james the ball a couple times that way jordan
15:40like that reverse yeah eight carries eight combined carries over 17 games equals 140 plus
15:48carries and that to me if you go eight touches a game that's the formula wouldn't you guys want
15:53to see that yeah and it's all there for the niners to do this like it's there's no excuse for
15:58shanahan
15:58to run christian mccaffrey into the ground this year there just isn't no no look at that i also
16:04understand that last night seeing the play calling you know that isn't shanahan he doesn't call plays
16:09no it's clay kubiak i kind of like clay kubiak's play calls i know they're kyle's plays in the
16:15sequence of what clay wants to to run i'm i like him yeah we'll see yeah i mean hey gift
16:21i mean
16:21kyle's still gonna call the plays this year we all know that's how it is but they got a good
16:25backup
16:26play caller i guess well they don't have a four string quarterback uh no adrian i don't ever want
16:31to see adrian martinez again is curtis work to be he's terrible let's pick this up on the other
16:35side hopefully curtis work is ready for week one because that is adrian martinez is
16:38a practice squad quarterback at best we are coming to you live from laughing among studios
16:42laughing on richly brood in san francisco where we talk about this game all morning long we'll
16:46touch a little bit on giants valkyries warriors at some point throughout the show uh giants win
16:50last night valkyries win last night a lot of winning in the bay area last night yeah take it while
16:54you
16:54can uh we're gonna talk with grant cohen in the seven o'clock hour he's a joint 720 where we'll
16:59react to
16:59last night's game he was there he's been at practice uh all pre-season as well so we'll be chatting
17:04with grant then
17:05you
